Opa! Olives, Feta, Pita, Souvlaki, Hummus, Falafel, Ouzo... is your mouth watering yet? These traditional Greek foods are just some of the items you'll find on the menus of Greek and Mediterranean restaurants in the Valley and for that matter around the world. And with today being Greek Independence Day, this Weekly Yelp is dedicated to going Greek!
The best authentic middle eastern cuisine in Phoenix, bar none (well, according to Dave K) can be found at Middle Eastern Bakery and Deli. Jason K concurs, suggesting that 'MEBADS' has the best falafel in town, not to mention rather excellent rice pudding. Arrive early as they're made fresh daily and usually sells out!
Feeling like a quick and casual Greek meal downtown during the work week? Sophie B suggests heading to Athenian Express for consistent, friendly service and the best hummus in town. But David SB forewarns: "although empty bottles of ouzo and other Greek spirits adorn the walls, no alcohol is served," which might be just as well since they close by 5 pm every evening!
If you're feeling like Greek food but tend to be the indecisive type, Michelle A recommends the big, fat appetizer sampler at Greektown - it's a great way to get to know the cuisine and stuff yourself silly while you're at it! If you you're dining out with a group of friends, consider Bacchanal Ristorante. Both Nancy D and Margaret L think their fun quotient can't be beat, and with a live band, belly dancers and plate tossing, we really can't disagree!
A hidden Greek gem, according to Amanda B, is Greek Patio, and yes there is indeed a patio. Danine D thanks Zeus for the dolmades at Olympic Flame, which are seasoned just right and practically melt in your mouth. For a true and authentic experience, Fattoush Restaurant is where you'll find Justin L; Norma R backs him up but advises that it's a no frills sort of establishment. If you do go, be sure to not miss out on their baba ghanoush -- Corianne S goes so far as to say she could eat that stuff with a spoon!
