8 Useful, 2 Funny, and 3 Cool
London
Yelping SinceApril 2008
Tucked away upstairs off Hanover St, it has the atmosphere of a place only you know about - except of course for the happy chatter of 20 other punters all equally pleased to find themselves there.
The food is excellent face and belly-filling fare. Crammable bread, risotto, haggis-neaps-tatties, steak, sausage&mash, stew etc. all executed honestly with the occasional unique personalised touch. Good wine list too.
Prices are very reasonable and I've always gotten a table when I phoned ahead - just turning up you might not be so lucky, and for good reason ;)

Too crowded, too expensive and generally a bit soulless.
If you're in the area, and you've never been before, then go - it passes 10 minutes. If you want the best candy store in town, get your sugar-crazed self down to Economy Candy on Rivington and Essex.

East Side Ink
Category: Tattoo
Neighbourhoods: East Village, Alphabet City
With a clear desire for a new tattoo, and a less-clear image of what I wanted, I happened upon this place while wandering in the East Village to meet a friend. I liked the open, clean, minimal shop and the friendly staff who let me simply sit for a while and look through portfolios. I settled upon really liking the work of Kelly Krantz and booked an appointment to discuss designs and do the work the following weekend.
Kelly is an incredibly talented chap and worked with me for over an hour to work out the detail of my design. Sketches done, he got to work and while a couple of placid dogs trundled over to say hello, and 2 other guys got ink from equally great artists, drew out and filled the design within 45 minutes.
The tattoo healed very quickly and looks better than I could have imagined. Turned out later that two very-tattooed friends had been to Kelly in the past too, and theirs look fantastic.
When I work out what it is I want next, I'm coming right back.

Good things:
+ Tiny place with oldschool chairs, warm old decor and a great atmosphere.
+ The staff are lovely. Stephanie has done me two bloody good haircuts so far, finding me a classic but fractured style that's good for work and play.
+ Decent music on the stereo, from people who care about music.
+ The price is right.
Great things
+ Complimentary bourbon, from a Dickson branded shot glass, oh yes.
I hope to keep these guys in business for as long as I don't need Rogaine.

It's your second night in operation - the launch night was apparently a blast, according to my housemate - but now it's Friday night and you're packed by 8pm, just as you always hoped.
Why, why, why is the kitchen so unbelievably slow and erratic???
The menu looks good, and we ordered, feeling hungry and excited for good food, but we were forced to wait nearly a full hour for our starters, all of which could only take 5 mins to heat (ribs, mini corn dogs, mac&cheese and cornbread). It tasted good, albeit with tiny LES portions, but I can only imagine it looked like a scene from Kitchen Nightmares back there.
This food is not hard, that's the whole point, yet when it did come out it, we got a combination of our starters and mains all at once, and precious little explanation of why it took so long.
Service from the bar was okay, but the staff seemed to be very fresh and have little experience. Our drinks got ordered, made / opened, and left on the bar for 5 mins, while the barman went off to fetch more PBRs.
There seemed to be a total lack of communication and organization, and we left before our mains could arrive, a free round of shots for making us wait so long would have kept us there, but there was no apology for delays. As we exited the noises of complaint from several other tables - sans food - let us know we weren't the only ones.
Please Marfa, get your act together, you have such potential.

They're really good about warranty returns too - my Panasonic needed returning a week after purchase. The returns dept gave it a look over, agreed the problem matter-of-factly and promptly handed me a brand new replacement, all within 5 minutes.
Have bought myself and helped my friends to buy 3 cameras from here in total, in as many trips. Photo geek heaven.

Frankies 17
Category: Italian
Neighbourhood: Lower East Side
New Year's Eve 08/09, an old friend was visiting, and living in the LES, I knew there had to be the perfect, warm, oak panelled, intimate place somewhere nearby... Frankies is it. Frankies is just fantastic.
We ate their 5 course $85 prix fixe menu, slowly working our way through a bottle of (waiter recommended) Syrah, very happily stuffing our faces and swapping gazes. As many other reviews point out, they have the most intensely gratifying olive oil and bread to munch on whilst pondering over the tastiest pasta, gnocchi and vegetable selection I've eaten in while - great braised beef too. The regular menu looks good value - not cheap, but you could pay so much more uptown and not get anywhere near the same experience.
The place is minuscule, can't be more than twenty covers, and on the freezing night of NYE they drew a very heavy curtain across the door, making it deep warm, cosy and even more intimate than I anticipated.
Save this to take someone special.

Date
This place is wonderful - large helpings of really delicious, honest food and good prices. It has the feel of a diner with friendly service and a homely faded decor. Its very unpretentious and not a 'classy' date venue, but so long as you're not dining with ponces, you're good to bring anyone here, friends, family, dates.
Good beers by the bottle and wines too. Tunnocks teacakes on the counter and blackjacks come with your bill. Makes me smile everytime.
