Nihon Whisky Lounge

I definitely recommend coming here for special occasions! The atmosphere is cozy and perfect for a romantic date or anniversary. I particularly enjoyed the Dynamite dish (it's presented in flames) and the tofu appetizer. The platter with fatty tuna, avocado, beets, and shrimp chips is exceptional - I can't remember the name of it, but I highly recommend it.

We ordered several (6-7) dishes and shared between three people, which is probably the right amount if you want to leave feeling satisfied, and not completely stuffed.

I would avoid ordering sushi here. It was aiite, nothing special really.

Yabbies Coastal Kitchen - CLOSED

My buddy and I came across Yabbies during our Sunday stroll and decided to check out their brunch menu. We walked in and were seated promptly. Unfortunately, the service was extremely slow and we had to hunt down the servers for water, seasonings, to let them know we were ready to order, and to request for the bill. They never checked up on us once - very disappointing, especially since there were only seven other parties in the restaurant and three waiters!

I had the Crab Cake Benedict - sounds yummy right? English Muffin, sauteed Chard, Poached Eggs, Hollandaise Sauce, and Home Fries. It was mediocore and left me feeling unsatisfied.  fyi - the mimosa is made with orange juice and sparkling wine.

I don't think we will be going back to Yabbies...

The Punchline

I recently visited Punch Line to watch Bobby Lee and Nick Youssef's comedic performances, which was awesome by the way (except for the fact that Bobby Lee kept looking at his watch throughout his routine).

From outside, the venue doesn't look too impressive - (look for the green awning). And from the inside, not that much better I'm afraid.

The cocktail waitress was swift AFTER the first round, which is understandable since everyone is seated at the same time. We arrived early (front of the line) in order to 'secure' seats, but were led to the far dark corner of the room because we were a party of 7! Not cool at all, why come early if they can't seat us in decent seats?

Of course I'd go back if one of my favorite comedians were performing because I'm not there for the venue, but rather the entertainment.

I went to the Fox Theater for the very first time to see Julieta Venegas perform on Cinco de Mayo and it was an amazing experience.

Apparently, the venue was recently revamped and I think the owners did a fabulous job - great space and design. Even more impressive were the prices for the drinks, very affordable!

Philz is definitely my favorite spot to get coffee! They always get it just the way I like it. . The people who work at Philz also go above and beyond to ensure that you are completely satisfied with your coffee.

The only downfall is the wait, but that's just the nature of the beast. If you want fresh, customized coffee that has its own unique distinct flavor, it takes time...but it's well worth it.

If you like themed-bars, this is one to check out! I highly recommend getting there early to secure a spot in one of the cozy vans, if not the water bed located at the front of the bar. You won't have to wait long to be served because they've got plenty of staff behind the bar, which is always a plus. The only annoying thing about the bar were the stools! They are in the shape of car seats, which make it a bit difficult to squeeze through to place your order at the bar - not the most efficient or practical use of space.

BTW - if you are not comfortable with nudity, you may want to avoid the centerfolds plastered on the floors and counter :)

No wonder there was a whole lot of sexual tension around the bar...not sure I'd use the toilet in this bar.

All-in-all, fun place to experience, but nothing special about their cocktails - just a place to grab a couple of beers or a vodka tonic.

One of my favorite local spots. With plenty of bars to choose from on Polk Street, I always start or end the night here because I know the crowd is typically fun and friendly. I like the music, vibe and service at Blur.

I recommend getting there before 11pm because it can get pretty packed and some of the riffraff manage to crawl in later on.

Penelope

A true hidden gem in Oakland! If you live near downtown Oakland or work around the city center, you've probably passed this hidden treasure a hundred times. (located on the street level of the tall ASK building)

You will always find Saigon and Johnny at the bar. This duo runs the joint and will always invite you to play a game of dice. I recommend trying Saigon's "Oaktown Heat" or Johnny's "Jali-Berry", but if you want something sweet and girlie, ask for "La Kristita."

The bar serves light snacks and sandwiches, which is great for lunch or a snack before a BIG night in the town. Food in the tummy before a long night of drinking is always a good idea.

I'm looking forward to the Julieta Venegas After Party at Penelope this Cinco de Mayo!

Love this bar! (except for the ridiculous queue outside - don't particularly like it when bars don't let people inside because of "capacity", but when you get in, it's not even full)

Very reasonable prices and fun atmosphere.

Cocktails are the BEST I've ever tasted in SF. I'm usually a vodka + tonic kind of gal, but I couldn't resist trying a cocktail, which ended up being three or more! I must admit, it was a bit of a wait to get my drink after placing my order, but then again...you accept it because you realize that the bartender needs to be very precise to perfect your delicous cocktail - totally worth the wait!

The vintage get up that the bartenders and cocktail waitresses wear is a nice playful touch!

Would have given it five stars if it weren't for the silly line out front.

Great atmosphere and delicious food (large portions)! The location isn't the best, but since I work just around the corner, it's my little mid-day escape from sitting in from of the computer. I highly recommend the Torta Ahogada! "drowned sandwich braised pork shoulder in a chile arbol sauce with manteca fries". Doesn't the description just make your mouth water?

Definitely going back there soon to try out the other dishes...
