Progreso

Neighbourhood: Covent Garden

The Thomas Neal centre is in Covent Garden, just of Neal Street. As a teenager I would often come as the small mall was full of skater shops and you could get vice magazine. Recently there are less stores, instead the ground floor seems to be almost exclusively Superdry. Still, I often stop here for a break from the crowds. Progresso is a coffee place run from a central stand on the basement floor. It sells hot and cold drinks and a range of snacks.

The coffee is good and the snacks are tasty. There are a few seats and you don't feel as though you are in a thoroughfare. The staff are very friendly, though if there is only one person serving and making drinks it can be pretty slow.

Progreso is a good place for a break from shopping.

"I like girls who wear Abecrombie & Fitch, Chinese food makes me sick"
-LFO "Summer Girls"

Whilst long established in the US, Abercrombie & Fitch only opened its first UK store fairly recently with considerable fuss. The shop is pretty big and curiously located just off Saville Row.

As the other reviewers have mentioned it is essentially like clothes shopping in a Gay disco. There is low lighting and terrible music. The shop itself is quite handsome with lots of wood panelling. The clothes aren't very exciting, it is essentially a transatlantic Jack Wills.

The strangest aspect of the shop is the two ripped shirtless guys who meet you at the door. They are incredibly handsome and if you're not prepared for it it is quite surreal.

Tintin Shop

It's bad to think in absolutes, still as a general rule cool people like Tintin, my favourite is Tintin in Tibet.   Still it's one thing enjoying it as a kid and another dressing up in branded clothes. Nonetheless, it is a great shop and really fun to look around if nothing else.

They sell all the comics and all sorts of other merchandise. As I type I am wearing a Tintin and the Shooting Star t-shirt which I bought from the shop. There are posters, key rings, all sorts. It is a charming little shop and a perfect place to get a kid a present.

The Garden Pharmacy is a health and beauty across the road from the Covent Garden tube station. I've found it a good place to go to buy cologne. There is a wide selection and the staff are very obliging. I recently went to buy some nail polish as a present for my sister. The lady who served me was very friendly and helpful.

If you need some health and beauty supplies the Garden Pharmacy is a great place to go with a incredible selection and convenient location.

Mediterranean Cafe

When I was living in halls I would often walk by the Mediterranean Cafe. I always admired the attractive tiled sign, however, I rarely had a reason to stop. Then having napped too long and missed dinner I decided to go and give it a shot.

The interior is fairly standard, a large central counter and a few seats and tables. I had fish and chips which perhaps wasn't particularly bright. It was okay but still perhaps better to order something more in the spirit. The decor was a little faded, and there wasn't much atmosphere. Perhaps because it was later on.

I would recommend the cafe more as a place for a coffee and a snack rather than a sit down meal.

Valtaro

Valtaro is a greasy spoon cafe on Marchmont street. There is a large green awning, under which is outside seating. Inside, on the left, there is counter seating which wraps around three walls. There is a food counter immediately before you as you come in.

The food is typical greasy spoon and very cheap. The food is incredibly standard; an egg sandwich is literally two pieces of bread and a fried egg. In general I would stick with the egg, bacon, chips etc. which are good. Due to its prices it is very popular with students as well as builders and other usual greasy spoon patrons.

Whilst not remarkable, it is really cheap, the people are friendly and has a shabby charm.

For a long time I used to go to the Snappy Snaps regularly to get films developed. I have since stopped because it is too expensive. However, the staff here are really friendly and helpful. In addition to developing and selling film they have a range of printing services, allowing you to print t-shirts, mugs, posters etc.  Unfortunately, I can't recommend it for development, however if you need printing done then it is worth a trip as the staff are friendly and competent.

The Marquis of Cornwallis is a pub on Marchmont Street. It is quite large, set across two floors. Both floors are open plan. The ground floor is larger and smartly decorated. The upper room is smaller and looks more like a traditional pub. Both floors have a bar which is fully stocked with a good selection of beers.

The crowd is mixed in terms of ages with many students as well as tourists and local workers. The staff are efficient and pleasant enough. Though it is quite fun and lively at night I prefer it as a place for daytime drinking.

It is also alongside the Brunswick centre and so ideal for a drink before a cinema or after shopping.

Jessops is perhaps the largest chain of photographic equipment shops in the UK. I write this review as I feel this particular store deserves special attention. Over the past year I have been using a film SLR to take photos. It is a lot of fun and great for learning. Unfortunately developing films is very expensive which rather hampers things. Here however, development and a CD costs about £6 and you get a free roll of film.

The staff are very friendly, informed and helpful. The shop is smaller than some, however, it is a decent size and there is a wide range of stock.

Kennards is an Organic grocer and cafe on Lambs Conduit Street. Though small they sell a wide range of high quality, often locally sourced goods. So much so, that if you had the funds and inclination you could do all your food shopping here. I sometimes buy a few bits and bobs, generally though I come to the cafe. It is a small room beyond the main shop with a few tables and a counter.

Food is ordered at the till and then brought over to you at your seats. When I last went it was only a couple of days after Christmas and it was running at half-speed. There were a selection of box lunches and hot soup. I had the soup, a cappuccino and a large Tunnocks caramel bar. It was all great and the girl who served me was very friendly.

Kennards is a wonderful small shop to buy food or have a quick snack.
