Saffron

I have lived in many cities, states and countries and I keep going back to get my haircut by Amanda at Saffron. I may get a touch-up in London or Dublin, but I always end up going to Saffron at least once a year. Her color is only the best I have seen anywhere, and her ability to turn my vague requests into concrete hairstyles is amazing.

Beggars Bush (alternately known as Tinkers Snatch) is an old-style Dublin pub that's usually packed with cranky old men and tech nerds.

They have a great outside patio with tables when the weather is nice, although it is generally overrun with drunken Google employees (who work nearby) on a Thursday and Friday evening.  You're pretty safe showing up on a Saturday, though, and be sure to get a toastie.

Corrigans Bar & Lounge

Corrigans--or the Mount P, as those who who are incredibly sound call it--is possibly the best pub in Dublin. Luckily it's mostly empty as there actually aren't that many sound people in Dublin and that ones that are appear to be over the age of 70, based on the Corrigans clientèle.

Good place for a pint and their spirits--namely their vodka and red lemonade--is served cheapish and strongish.

Irish City Tours

Feeling very guilty about my lack of familiarity with the Irish countryside, and being in possession of a gift certificate to a tour website, I had booked a day trip to Newgrange and Monasterboice that was through Irish City Tours / Gray Line Dublin.

We got to the tourism office at some ungodly hour (9am, possibly) and were told by a stone-faced, bottle blond that the tour was cancelled "because of the volcano". I asked why we weren't notified in advance of the cancellation, and she told me they only decided to cancel it the day before. Why didn't you call me the day before, then? I asked. She said because their offices were closed. Uh, what? There was no apology and no pretense of customer service.

The only thing more embarrassing than booking a tour like this is getting shot down at the Tourism Centre when you should be in bed.

Listons

I used to avoid Listons because I was certain that it was grossly overpriced. But then I actually did some price-checking the other day and realized that most items I needed were pennies away from Fresh, and sometimes cheaper.

(Not much of a bar, I know but the options in the area are limited.)

So go on and shop at Listons guilt-free. Perfect place to pick up imported tomatoes and dried pastas that are much nicer than what you'll get at the other shops.

The owner recently printed out a Wikipedia page for me when I didn't know the difference between muscovado and demerara sugar. I see this less as evidence of how stupid I am but more as proof of how nice Listons is.

Anseo

Anseo is exactly the sort of place that I would hate, but for some reason I just can't. Every time I'm in there the choons are good and no one seems to be wearing spandex and sunglasses indoors, thus allowing it to skirt the line that the Bernard Shaw drew in the sand so many moons ago.

Of all of the nearby youth-pubs (the Village, GBS, etc.) this one is a good bet for a pint.

Scruffy Murphys

Scruffy Murphys is a perfect place to have a drink of a Monday. I'm sure all weekdays are good days to drink at Scruffy's, but Monday is particularly nice if you are the TGIM sort. I have spent many, many (too many) Mondays here and am pleased to say that in addition to everything else, I have come close to setting myself on fire in this establishment.

Nice local pub, particularly because there's not a lot of riff-raff hanging around on weekdays (like Mondays). Pub food is pretty decent, too.

If you like Korean food--and I like Korean food--Hop House is the best that Dublin has to offer.

Their sundubu chi gae was nice (although I could do without rock shrimp in anything) and their BBQ was better. They also carry Hite beer. The bibimbap is good, but could use more veggies in it.

Dublin, it's time to start loving Korean food! Start here.

So much better than Tesco, and cheaper (usually) than Fresh. Everyone here is incredibly nice and they will order you a turkey if you need one. (And you do)
