The girlfriend and I were looking for somewhere to grab a cheeky beer before heading to a restaurant booking at 8 and stumbled across Freud - what a great find!
We didn't try the cocktails this time but I'm sure we'll be back soon! We also had a debate about whether it was a 4 or 5 star place and because (despite the sticky floor!) it had a great atmosphere and everyone there was having fun, I'm going for the top rating.
Looking forward to a White Russian and some mojitos next time...

Mela has a pleasant vibe, attentive service and very easonable prices (assuming you take advantage of one of the permanent discounts you can find online!). Probably not somewhere you'll rave about but a solid choice for a pre-theatre curry or a meal out with friends.
I was introduced to this place by a friend when I worked on Arundel St nearby, and it soon became a firm favorite for post-drinks refuelling. Very good value (£12 set menu especially!) and with great tasting food - for it's price range and location it can't be beat :-)
I read the other review of Dalys, which mentioned the high prices and unimaginative food yet smart location and good service. Champagne and jacket potaroes?
Having previously been a regular, I can explain. Dalys thrives on having a great location with a captive audience of lawyers and management consultants, so virtually all of the drinks purchased there will be on expenses and no-one's really bothered about the prices. Similarly for the food, it's typical 'bar snacks' fodder being purchased along with a couple of bottles of champagne and a round of beers. The simpler the better, it's just a stopgap before going elsewhere to eat properly, or home!
All this means that its peak times are 5-9 pm especially on Thursday & Friday. Weekends are pretty dead, when it's presumably filled with people marvelling at high prices and the very ordinary food...

Tasty ciabattas and super-quick service- nothing incredible but the best choice for a quick lunch in the area.

Fantastic value and extremely tasty food - try the grilled chicken, and the halloumi. A solid meal for two washed down with mint tea (Muslim so no alcohol) came to £30 including service. The only thing keeping it from getting 5 stars is the pitta bread which was a tad too chewy, but that shouldn't detract from an otherwise excellent, and filling, meal.

This place is insane.
One thinks that surely, it shouldn't be able to exist, what with modern 'elf and safety' regulations... and yet it does. Another place I haven't been for a while, but I remember it perfectly. A tiny underground cellar, with a great selection of wines and port.
This is an excellent place to bring a visiting friend, as it's crammed with history but nicely off the beaten path (or rather, it used to be).

Oxo Tower Bar

OXO bar has some of the best views of the Thames around - and it's very central, and IT'S ON THE SOUTH BANK! For us South Londoners, it's a fantastic venue for some up-market cocktails or a gin and tonic on a summer evening.
Thankfully I came when I worked for a consultancy, and don't recall ever paying for a drink - so can't complain personally about the prices. But as you'd expect, the venue and the service comes at a price, and unless price isn't an issue, you probably won't be coming here too often. For the special occasions, though - or when someone else is paying - it's awesome :-)

This Dim T restaurant is right next to the river with amazing views of Tower Bridge - ask for a table by the window when you book! The food is also very good - perfectly cooked Dim Sum and not too expensive.
