Taxin Thai Restaurant
Category: Thai
Neighbourhood: Maida Vale
I'm a huge fan of eastern food, so am quite picky, but this place constantly delivers (ker-boom-tssssh). It serves an excellent range of Thai dishes together with a selection of popular Japanese dishes.
I can highly recommend the coconut rice and dim sum, as well as the red king prawn curry. I usually find that things like spring rolls are normally quite dry when you order them from a takeaway, but Taxin's are delicious.
You can also visit them and eat. Although the decor is a little dated, the service is friendly and there's a laid-back vibe that's often perfect when you're tired/hungry.
Very good prices and swift delivery (well, it would be for us as it's a five minute walk, but still....)

I'm a huge fan of dahl, and theirs is fabulous. Tasty, just the right mixture of lentil and sauce. Just gorgeous.
I usually get that with paratha bread and butter chicken. The boy is a fan of their korma, and they do nice fluffy pilau.
The only thing I'd steer clear of is the samosas. They're obviously homemade, but are just a little too doughy for me :)
Always on time, and not too pricey either.
It's not much to look at, but boy did we have some fun.
I wasn't expecting much if I'm honest. It's decked out like every other tex mex place around the world, with garish blow up Corona bottles and the like everywhere.
However, what started as a mission to find nachos turned into us all ordering food. I had chicken quesadillas, Jules had steak fajitas and Michelle had chorizo nachos. All of it was gorgeous, and we got through two pitchers of frozen margaritas to wash it down.
Two shared desserts later (hello toffee waffle!), and the bill came to £25/head. Bar-gain.
The amusing up-selling from the waitress wasn't even annoying, in fact, I applauded her tenacity.
We sat with mexican hats on, gabbling about nothing, laughing and arguing about films. Plus, it was only 10 mins walk from Paddington. I can't wait to go back.
No charge, even on a Saturday, which was grand. But man, drinks are pricey. We were told that we'd arrived on the last night and so a 'huge sale' was in play! That equated to a reduction of £9 to £7.50 for a cocktail. Oooh. Calm down.
The girls were drinking the bar's famous 'paint tin punch' cocktails most of the night, which they all seemed to love. And yes, they really are served in paint pots in a variety of colours depending on which gin you choose. £6.90 each or £25 for a large one to serve 4-6.
We had the front bit of the bar, which seats about 25 comfortably - and our own waitress.
Strangely quiet for a weekend though. We were told it would get busy around 10pm, which never happened - but that suited us to be fair. Around that time, the dancing began and we stayed on the little floor area at the back all night.
The staff were all very accomodating, and let us all in wth fancy dress on with reasonably no gripes.
The decor changes every few months or so, but is usually pretty neon/punk inspired. I have to say it felt a little cheese-tastic for me, and I wouldn't hold a party there myself, but I had fun and that's all that counts in this case.

Way down Great Portland Street, it's reletively unknown but still easy to get to and well worth a visit.
The atmosphere is totally inviting, and you feel comfortable sitting down from the moment you step in. Apparently it's pretty tough to get a table on the busier days, we were in there having a sneaky cider on a Wednesday and it was packed - so I can wholly believe it.
The prices are good, the toilets are clean (plus, the manager has left a really important notice about leaving drinks and bags lying about - which I thought was not only very thoughtful but also ensured that I kept my wits about!). I spent ages studying the food menu, even though we didn't eat, and that looked yummy too. Great choice of beers and fun music to boot.

It's such an easy place to get to (literally five minutes walk from Waterloo station through the underpass) and there's now a lovely sense of familiarity I feel when going inside.
The last time, we sat in the cafe downstairs as we were early, and surprisingly, the coffee was really very good. Big comfy sofas and open windows make for an unusual place to chill out.
Pickng up pre-booked tickets via the machines in the lobby is easy, then upstairs you'll find the entrance to the cinema.
There's a pretty good choice of food and drink (including a licensed bar) for a cinema. Of course, prices are high, but at least the popcorn is fresh, the drinks are fizzy and the pick & mix is fully stocked!
My recommendation for the best seats in the house are M17 and M18. They're four or five rows from the back, so you're up high, but you can actually *see* the whole screen. Plus, you're right by the exits for a speedy getaway :)

Flemings Mayfair
Category: British
Neighbourhood: Mayfair
As it was pouring, I hopped in a cab there, but it's not too far from my office in Soho. Nice and central, and in the middle of uber-posh Mayfair.
My taxi door was opened by a rather dapper gent and I was walked from front door to the restaurant by another. The place was empty (as Rebecca O says below) - but we had a very different experience to her.
The decor is sharp, with bright colours and Alice in Wonderland style nooks hiding different rooms. Mirrors and complimentary lighting make for a really nice atmosphere. I agree that it felt like we were downstairs, but I definitely wasn't uncomfortable. We settled in, quickly decided on the traditional afternoon tea with a glass of bubbles (I forget which, but it was dry and delicious) at £32.50 a head.
The drinks were delivered quickly, with a three tiered selection of cakes to follow. We tucked into the classic mxture of cucumber, salmon, egg and ham sanwiches and then the first layer of sweets.
We had to give e kick to the waiter for our tea (a divine earl grey with rosebud concoction), but that was only because he was waiting for us to finish the champagne before bringing it.
The scones were mini, served with clotted cream as yu'd expect and individual jars of blackberry, raspbery, strawberry and apricot jam. The mini slice of victoria sponge that sat on the same plate was probably the best I've ever had.
The final layer was similarly indulgent, with a mini chocolte browne, cupcake, millionaire shortcake and frangipane. Very sweet, but when eaten over the course of two hours, totally manageable.
I had a lovely time at Flemings. My only disappointment was that I hadn't realise you had to pre-order the specialised teas 24 hours early. But with chocoholic, pink (where 20% is donated to Breakthrough Breast Cancer), savoury martini and gluten-free on offer, I'd definitely go back.

We went last Saturday and ordered classic fry-ups, only to be sat waiting for an age and then be served up with lukewarm food that tasted bland, and in some parts, quite revolting. I left most of mine, but the boy was too hungry. Boy did he pay for it. Food poisoning for the next 24 hours, not nice.
I'd still pop in for a milkshake, but as for the food, not a chance. The staff here are just clueless, don't give a damn and have forgotten how to be nice to their customers.

From the outside it looks surprisingly slick, with a few different entrances and usually a big crowd hanging outside.
Both times we reserved the upstairs bar (£700 min spend on a Weds, £800 on a Thursday with a £100 deposit to reserve). There's a bar, and you get two bartenders if there's a crowd. Around 60 people came to the event I held for work, and that was probably a bit much. 40 would be a perfect number for that space.
One of the best things about the areas is upstairs is that it's right next to the stairs that lead to the bathrooms, and it has an outside balcony area.
The staff are great, and there are nibbles available if you want to eat. We'll be taking our social events back here again, as it's a nice space and is only a short walk up from Tottenham Court Road tube. The only thing is that the bar shuts at 11pm, but maybe that's actually a blessing in disguise...

HOWEVER.
We ordered pizza from here, at about 1am (La Basque's closing time), and it was delivered in 40 minutes. That's impressive at the best of times, let alone on a Saturday night.
Plus, the pizzas are cooked in a wood fired oven, made with fresh ingredients and come as thin crust non-greasy moons of deliciousness.
We ordered the Granfesta, which is a meat-lovers delight with a kick of spice (my personal favourite) and made up our own topped with onions, mushrooms, pepper and smoked ham.
Each "15 came to £14.95, which is the same price as 'banned from my house' Domino's. For quality, speed and a really nice meal, I have no idea why you'd go anywhere else.
Lovely sides too. I can particularly recommend the caesar salad :) They do fantastic deals as well (e.g. 2 x "12 for £15.99). Best ordered through Just Eat.
