Yelp's Rumfest @ Mojo!

What another brilliant Yelp event!

Looking at the other reviews, it looks like everyone else enjoyed it.

I turned up to the event a little late - somehow managed to get my days mixed up! Luckily as wasn't too late and it had all not properly started by the time I got there.

Sam from Mojo (the Leeds branch) told us about the history of rum and how its made etc. Very knowledgable.

We got to try 5 different types of rum. Now I will be honest and say that I am not really much of a drinker of spirits. I usually just drink beer and some girly cocktail!! LOL.

The rums tasted quite similar - I did taste hints of various flavours. I think the 2nd one was slightly wood-y. I do remember the 3rd one was 57% and was VERY strong.  After each sample of rum, we were all made a cocktail using that rum. You can see why most of us ended up tipsy/drunk at the end of the night.

My favourite cocktail was one called Guarapitas. It tasted quite like lilt but with a nice rum taste in the background - it blended really really well and it was quite frankly an amazing cocktail. I will be trying that out the next time I have cocktails - anyone got any excuse to go to a cocktail place soon?? :)

As well as the drinks, we had some lovely sweet and savoury snacks. There were some chocolate brownies (mmmm) and some tiny little cupcakes (although I didn't have any myself but was told they were very nice). We also had tubs of crisps. The tubs looks a bit look the tubs you get twiglets in but instead they contained crisps which were like kettle crisps. I tried the black pepper flavour - not bad - and also had a Yorkshire sauce flavour. Now I don't really know what is "Yorkshire flavour" but they tasted GOOD! A bit like Worcester flavour crisps.

Overall a great evening, meeting new people. Was a great way to spend a wet, cold evening. Drink, snacks, good company :)

I recommend you check out Mojo's, its selection of rum, its cocktails (especially Guarapita) and of course Yelp events.

CMYE @ Almost Famous: These Burgers Are Now!

Really enjoyed the Almost Famous Burger "pop up" restaurant and another CMYE event :)

The burgers were very very tasty. Maybe not the best EVER but still very much right up there. I went for the Famous Burger - which had cheese, lettuce, tomato, ketchup and their famous sauce. (I had previously had some of their burgers before when they had a stall in the Manchester Food festival - that time I went for something different but also tried they hot sauce - which is hot!).

As a side, I had some fries. Not just normal fries though!! These were called Trailer Trash Fries. Basically some nice proper fries with onions, BBQ sauce and cheese sauce. To be honest, the cheese sauce and BBQ sauce didnt taste very "cheesy" or "BBQ"-ey.  Still, just being picky!! They tasted good :)

The burger and fries were served in American style baskets. Although the portions sizes are nothing like it, it reminded me a bit of Man Vs Food.

However, its not all just about food. The service and the venue have to be considered. I really like the decor of the place. Wooden floors, exposed beams, cool art. Since its a "pop up" restaurant and only open for a few weeks, its located in a place with no sign and just behind a brown door. To access the place you go down a corridor, up some stairs (passing a sofa on its side). You do wonder if your really going to the right place!! We saw people going in but no one coming out!! LOL.

The service was very good. Food coming quickly, handy rolls of kitchen paper available - a clue that it could be messy eating the burgers. The staff working there (who were all good looking - is that what serving (and eating) burgers does for you??) were very good and efficient.

One of the rules of Almost Famous was that no photography allowed. Actually a few other rules like no blogging - are Yelp reviews allowed then?? Anyway, I did manage to take a photo of my burger and fries!

The place is (or was) located between Keko and Socio Rehab. Perfect for our post Burger drinks :)

Hopefully they will be opening up something more permanent soon!

Been here a few times, most of the time actually having a meeting with a client. Its a nice convenient place to meet. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and free wifi.

Seems to be a place were most people have a laptop - which pretty much all seem to be Macbooks (I guess it is the Northern Quarter and where the arty/hip/indie people are) - with them. Having a drink while doing a bit of work - or maybe just generally surfing the net or checking facebook??

As well as drinks, they have a selection of cakes/sandwiches etc - not tried them myself so can't comment but heard they taste good.

Elite Event: Brew Ate All The Pies?

Another great Yelp event organised by Emma.

It was a cold evening in Manchester so it was good to enjoy some food and drink in good company. Like Chris, I can't remember the exact names/flavours of the pies but they were all good :)

My personal fav was the steak pie. The cheese pie was probably my 2nd favourite - if I remember correct it had won some award - being the best vegetarian pie.

The pies cost about £7 and we basically got to try a quarter of a pie of each type. It was actually pretty filling and it was more or less my evening meal sorted! :)

As well as the pies, there were samples of cheese. I am not really a cheese expert and although I like cheese, its just the normal boring stuff like chedder and red leicester I like. Tried a few different types and all tasted good - some better than other but thats all personal taste.

The beer we got to try was from BrewDog. There were 3 types I think - 5am Saint, Hardcore and Punk IPA. I only tried the 5am saint one which had a flavour of lychees.

As far as ales are concerned it was good but I am more a lager fan. I know thats probably not "proper" beer but I like what I like :)

Anyway, overall a very good evening and thank you to Emma, everyone at Fyg and Josie from BrewDog.

If you get a chance to visit Fyg Deli, check it out. As well as the food to eat there, you can buy some produce from the little shop area - various homemade sauces, jams, oils etc - perfect for a Christmas present! ;)

Went here last night and it was great food. We went for a set menu which was tapas and also paella. Not sure about all the names of the tapas dishes but they included meatballs, seafood salad, potatoes with tomatoes/salsa, diced pork, sautéed mushrooms, breaded crabclaws and paprika chorizo. About 12 tapas dishes into total plus the paella.

Set menu was £16.50. If you don't want paella, its about £2 cheaper.

The only problem with tapas is that there are so many dishes, you always run out of space quickly. You have to quickly eat dishes so you can make room for others.

The food came very quickly. Good job as we were all hungry. The paella came about 40 minutes after we ordered - a good sign that it was cooked from scratch.

Overall a very good evening. It was very busy and a group were actually sitting on the tables situated in the sort of "lobby" area at the bottom of the stairs near entrance (and near the entrance to toilets). I assume they were given the option if they wanted to sit there.

I have heard El Rincon is very popular and you always have to book a table. There is quite a bit of football memorabilia on the walls and, as Emma-Louise H has also mentioned, I have heard that Manchester United have visited in the past.

El Rincon is actually not situated on Deansgate as it has been mentioned on some places. Its actually on a small dark street parallel to Deansgate - which you could argue looks a bit dodgy especially when it was all dark and wet last night - typical Manchester rainy weather!! El Rincon is not the easiest place to find and I would imagine doesnt get much passing custom.

Yum!!!!

This was a great Yelp event. Great organising as usual and the food was delicious! Mmmmmmm. (My mouth is watering just thinking about the food again).

I bought along a couple friends to the event and they both really enjoyed themselves. The service was brilliant. Staff making sure everyone was happy and glasses were topped up with wine. Even though the wine was right infront of us, they still offered to pour the wine for us.

The food was all top notch. Everything from the starter to the dessert. For starter we had Masala Papad (appetiser consisting of papadums with salsa, onions, tomatoes), pakora bites (spicy chicken bites) and cheese tikki (lovely cheese fritters).

For the main we had Dhum Biryani (lovely vegetarian biryani), Masala Fish (fish curry - never had a fish curry before but it was very good!) and Makhanwala (chicken tikka). Dessert was a sweet warm carrot based dish - cant remember the name.

Even the gate-crasher, who just walked into the restaurant and randomly sat down as a spare seat, didn't spoil the evening in any way. The staff got him to leave with little fuss - not before he decided to down a glass of wine!!

I highly recommend Mughli and I hope to go back again in the future.

Doops Coffee House

Not sure if this is quite a new place or its taken over from an existing cafe/sandwich place.

Been today and had a steak baguette with caramelised onions - this was on the special menu and cost £2.85. Took a bit long to wait for it but it proves it was freshly made. Tasted very good.

Looking at the menu at the "normal" sandwiches, they are good value. Bacon bap for £2. Ham salad on baguette, ciabatta or roll for £2.65.

I always end up going to the same sandwich places and having the same sandwich so trying to check out other places for lunch. So far so good at Doops.

(There used to be a cafe called Lite Delights at the same address. Dont know if its just a name change (and its had a refurb done) or a brand new place.

Genghis Khan's Mongolian Grill

I have been to Genghis Khan many years ago and didnt really remember the food being anything special. Its kind of one of those novelty things. Its probably under different management now and the reviews here have been mixed so I wondering what it would be like.

Anyway, I went last night with a friend. We had got the GroupOn deal which mean it was £14.30 for a starter and main. This is about (if not exactly) half the normal price. We were originally going to go last week just before GroupOn deal expired but it was fully booked - they had extending the offer by a week so we booked in for following week (yesterday).

The starters were very nice actually. They had run out of 3 starters on the menu but the alternatives sounded good. I had tempura prawns and my friend had chicken satay. They came very quickly. Almost certainly microwaved - however, they tasted good. Tried some of the chicken satay and tasted tender and not dry at all. You dont get a lot in the starter - just 2 pieces and bit of salad.

Then it was the actual Mongolian BBQ - the reason we were there. If you dont know what it is, you basically get a bowl and then just the ingredients u want the chef to cook on the big circular "hot plate". First you pick the raw food. There was beef, chicken, turkey, pork and 2 seafood options - prawns and squid. Then the veg - this included onions, peppers, carrots, broccoli, leeks, bamboo shoots. Finally was the sauces. Lots of different sauces ranging from soy sauce, hoi sin, BBQ, garlic oil, red wine. About 20 in total. Right at the end was some herbs and spices - garlic, ginger, five spice, chilli etc.

You then hand the bowl to the chef. No matter what you have, they cook it for pretty much the same amount of time. If you want your beef a bit pink, then its not an option! I think the meats and veg are cooked in such as size the after cooking for same amount of time, the food isnt massively overcooked. I tried most of the meats and all tasted good. The beef was the best - it wasnt overcooked or tough. The chicken was maybe a little bit overcooked but not bad. I thought the squid was going to be overcooked as it was on for a long time but not tough or chewy.

One problem you may have is if the person next to you had used lots of sauce, it will no doubt spill over to yours. My friend had a load of BBQ sauce (and also chilli flakes) on his, I didnt. When I started eating it I could taste the heat from his dish. If you not a fan of chillis etc, then maybe stand next to someone else in the queue who doesnt like chllli!

Overall, its good to go once so you know what its like. The whole thing about choosing the food you want and want flavours etc. The full price for the main course was about £14.30(??) so not cheap but comparable to a decent restaurant and you get something like a big steak.

The service was pretty good. The girl who saved us was smily and cheery.   I have heard the toilets are not that nice but I didnt use them. My friend said they were not great. It could certainly do with a lick of paint!

Usually go for the pork on half ciabetta here which used to be very nice. The last times I have been the pork is dry and not particularly juicy. It used to be also that the bit of crackling you got same nice and crunchy.

As I said, its now dry and not that nice. I have gone at different times from early lunch to late lunch - incase the pork is under the heat lamps for ages getting drier and drier. Went today at about 1130. Maybe the pork had been there since it opened in the morning??

Put me off coming here not - probably the last 4-5 times I have been getting the pork and its been dry. (Also, they never seem to have lamb nowadays - no matter what time around lunch I go)

Really nice place to get lunch. Can get very busy at lunch and has limited seating. I have been many times to have the hot carvary. The selection includes beef, lamb and chicken peri. You can have this on a ciabatta, bap or granary bun. All very nice. The only problem is sometimes the onions they have are not that nice because they have not peeled the onion properly. Otherwise it would get 5/5.

As well as the carvary, there is a salad bar, shop and deli selling hams, sausages, etc.

Strada

3.0 star rating

Had a pleasant enough meal here but nothing special.

We went to Spinningfields planning to go somewhere and make use of the Yellowcard. We usually go to Samsi so tried something different.

The Yellowcard deal for Strada was only from a set menu and nothing took our fancy. Wasnt the best choice really in the set menu.

We therefore just ordered normally from the menu.

I have a black cuttlefish pasta and my friend has a pizza. Pasta was nice and came quickly - although we were there at 5 and only one other table so would expect it to arrive fairly quickly.

Total bill was about £28 - they added on the optional tip. (We also had orange juices. Think the pizza was about £10 and pasta about £12??).

Like I said, it was nice but nothing special but I think it could be worth another try. However, it wasnt as filling as a Bento box meal from Samsi and even though the Yellowcard deal at Samsi is just 10% Monday-Saturday (compared to 25% off on Sundays), the price would have been about the same I think and would have had a lot more food.
