So I am a bit slow on the up take of reviewing this fantastic event but I made a video of the whole thing - So please have a look here: http://techfluff.tv/20...

(This was shot on a Kodak Zi8)

So my highlights include; the photo booth with lots of strange, wacky and wonderful props to play with, the GnT tea party complete with real grass (I thought it was fake. It wasn't!), the amazing roast hog, rum cocktails and ZipCar who gave everyone a free lift to the after party at Slim Jim's up the road. And of course, catching up with people and making new Yelp buddies!

A big thankyou to Lizzie, Laura and Leon - Yelp UK's community managers - for organising the shingdig and to some fellow yelpers who shared their favourite things and memories about the review site. Some of my favourite things about Yelp UK is the sense of community from online which translates to offline and that they have a nifty and very popular iPhone app where you can become instant Yelp friends.

Hope you enjoy the party video!

Interesting indeed. Bout time I got my Yelp pen out again and this was the catalyst.

Out of the Blue I received an invite to this OYE and, as i was in the 'Smoke' that week, I decided to go and see what my Anglo Saxon Yelp compatriots were all about. Wot a friendly bunch of lads and ladesses they are.

I immediately realised that the dynamic is different. First impression was that Brit Yelpers were more about the free stuff rather than the reviews but as i met more and more people I realised that this OYE consisted of a lot more 'guests' than any other event I have attended. The noobs that I spoke to were first timers to the concept of Yelp but I can see that, once they realised how it worked and their hangovers had worn off, then the London Yelp community is destined to expand rapidly.

The hard core Yelpers were an interesting crew indeed and I have a feeling that the UK talk threads will become a lot more prolific very soon. I threw in the suggestion that they should post a few times in S.F. and N.Y. just to get the hang of it. lmfao :)

Loved the venue, it had the right feel and acoustic for such a large group and the food and drink was top notch and picking a spot that was suitably divided into three separate themes was inspired. Big shout out to the organisers for getting that many people in without making it feel mobbed and the Red carpet at the entrance was a nice touch. Live bands, free cocktails and Oyster bar was right up my ickle street and the find of the night for me was zipcars http://www.zipcar.com
def' solved my transport problem for the rest of my stay in London.

For those of you still lusting after a Yelp lunch pail then you should now skip to the next para .....that Holy Grail of Yelp was free to any one who spotted them as they were in little piles at various points around the interior and, sad to say, some pernicious barstewards filled their boots by grabbing as many as they could. Not right my friends, just not cricket.

As for those of you who are wondering what i made of the ceiling ... I was not disappointed but what can you expect from a building that was originally a 19th century stable and has progressed into an Art Gallery and Acid House party venue and acted as a location for the 2009 Warner Bros Xmas party. Eclectic or wot!!

Happy first Birthday UK Yelp .... am seriously looking forward to the next one ....!!

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday, London Yelp
Happy birthday to you!!

The 3 Ls promised something great for Yelp's first birthday and boy did they deliver.

Not 1, not 2 but 3 rooms of fun fun fun. There was a nod to the past year in the shape of the tea room recreating one of the previous Yelp Elite Events but how did they get fresh grass and garden gnomes in there?

There was free food, carnivores and herbivores being equally well catered for. There was free booze and also non-alcoholic drinks for teetotallers like me. There was even free dessert in the shape of fro-yo. I even scored one of the fresh oysters.

However, as with all the events, it's the community of Yelpers who make the event and it was great to meet and chat to many old friends and a few new ones.

I didn't manage to get into the photobooth or get a game of fusbal but there's only so much fun you can fit into 2 hours!

Here's to another Yelptastic year ahead!

7 types of free drink, 7 stalls of free food, all at 7 Torrens St. I think this makes a good candidate for my lucky 777th review, don't you?

Yelp UK's Burst Birthday - bursting with more wonderful juvenile energy than Octomom in a labour ward. In my whole history of Yelp events never have I seen such a fun-studded line-up of entz, libations and freebies. 'Why Yelp, with this party you are really spoiling us, no?'

I haven't even got round the whole amazing Metalworks yet but the night has already given me some wonderful favourites like...
Twirly potato thing. Cheese flvr pls
A real bonafide photobooth. Snap.
A Circle Line underground train serving Makers Mark
Frae froyo as light as clouds and creamy as Angelina Jolie
Hog Roast with amazing crackling.
Oysters! OMGWTFBBQ!!!!!
... and my favourite if all... a whole room of real grass with real grass smell, gnomes and juniper vodka in antique porcelian. Wow. Wow Yelp Wow

If the afterparty is but 1/7th the fun that Burst Birthday us then someone better book me in for some serious ibuprofen tomorrow morning.

Three cheers and a round of applause please for Laura, Leon and Lizzie!

Not only did they pull off a F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C. party to celebrate Yelp's first birthday in the U.K but they did it with humour, energy, enthusiasm and passion. I don't care whether I win a round-the-world trip next January, I'm staying in London to attend their next shin-ding!

We're talking three rooms of fabulousness including a quirky pop-up pub with great ale, a cool pool table and vintage photo-booth, a brilliant street market with buskers, delicious food stalls and an awesome Tube carriage converted into a bar AND an in-door garden with fresh grass, garden gnomes, strings of flowers and chintzy tea-tables. All three were a delight to wander round and filled with fellow yelpers chatting, laughing, eating and drinking. I made the mistake of eating before I went - duh! - but still managed to squeeze in gorgeous fro-yo from Frae and beautiful finger cakes from Butterfingers. I also sipped a delightful G&T in a vinage tea-cup and savoured several Slim Jims cocktails.

Happy Birthday Yelp. You deserve it.

P.S. Got any of those Fiery Redheads left? I think I could manage another couple!

I know it's all been said already, but let me add my voice: OMGWTFBBQ AWESOME PARTY. The 3 L's (Trois Elles - sorry Leon) did a phenomenal job setting everything up, so thanks for enabling my good time.

Highlights for me:
Bronze Medal: Singing the 'Ken Lee' version of Mariah Carey's hit (http://www.youtube.com...) in the coat check line with two guys who are now friends!

Silver Medal: Spiriting away (w/ Mei L.) a gnome and then spending the next few days thinking of ways to use 'gnome' as a pun: misgnomer; gnome, alaska; never leave gnome without it; gnome chomsky; etc.

Gold Medal: Free booze. Let me repeat: f-r-e-e that spells 'free,' Makers Mark bourbon...baby (sung to the tune of: http://www.youtube.com...)

Many happy return Yelp
Well it was a 1st b'day, canna be returns can it?
Laura, Leon n Lizzie - you guys, never ending dedication to the cause of ensuring that us plebs of London (and surrounding counties) have something fun to do of a night - usually a Tuesday.
This was the most sensational evening to date - how do you manage to bring all of this together into 1 place, at the right time??
Genius!
No more, no less.
The evening itself - well, food - free, booze - free, entertainment - free, photos - free, loads n loads of groovy Yelpers - free
This was large, almost too large - I got lost at some point I'm sure.
Thanks to all who turned up, purveyors and partyers! You made this night an epic one.
Too much to compliment - just know this, Yelp's Burst Birthday No.1 will be one evening not forgotten.
I thank you all.

I drank a lot of gin, and I liked it.

I'm going to keep this short because there was just too much awesome going on at this party to recount it all here in full without accidentally leaving off a nod to one of the many amazing vendors there.

Yelp UK, you are amazing.  We're totally BFFs for life.

I can honestly say that this was the greatest party to which I've ever been.

Keep being classy, Yelp London.

Oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

I think Yelp's birthday should be celebrated on a monthly basis.

Five stars for any party with gin in teacups and tonic in teapots, with tables overflowing with rich and sticky cakes, with a whole roast pig and frozen yogurt, with a tube car full of Maker's Mark, and with my most favoritest party accessory ever - the photobooth full of tiaras and ridiculous sunglasses.  Congrats Yelp, on throwing a truly fabulous shindig of epic proportions.

But most of all, five stars for any party where the night ends with me bringing home a man. Specifically, a little man with a big beard, a pointy hat and a pot of gold who fits in my purse.

Here's to Yelp's Burst Birthday: The only party in London where you can pull a real garden gnome.

There should clearly be a 10 star option for this one, sure.

Here's what i loved (from what i can remember)!
gin teacups, gnomes, grass, hog, oysters, cakes, potato on a stick, the photobooth, bourbon, tunes in a furry hat, alex james, good chats, miss gold (always) a shit robber, jim and his slimness, caipirinhas.

What a wicked night, well done to the london L's!!
I heart yelp hard

Having missed the tecup party originally, I instantly fell in love with that room and found out what all the fuss before had been about. In fact, I originally totally missed that there -were- other rooms, and just hung out there til Red told me to run through the mirror. It worked!

Through all the different sections, each with their wonderful highlights and moods, it was difficult to find anywhere to settle without feeling like I was missing something elsewhere. A lot of moseying around, a lot of drinking and a lot of wives later, I worked out what the best part was - the people.

The people present at Yelp parties are always the second bit to come to mind (with no offense meant there, but seeing what the 3 L's come up with at any party is always the first awe-filled step for me), but they are always what keeps me coming back. We have such an amazing community, and it really showed tonight. Met some new people, met some people I'd seen on talk threads and never bumped into before, and also caught up with some people I just hadn't seen for a while. All three are great things, in my books.

In short, thank you all for making it what it was!

I don't even think I need to say anything, do I?

"They're at the post . . . they're off . . .
Portobello Gold is first out of the gate with
Butterfingers Cakes following closely behind
Chipstixs is placing third and moving to the rail . . .
With Frae Organic Frozen Yogurt moving up fast on the inside
Wait  now folks, with two furlongs to go
Papagayo Organic White Rum has come out of nowhere to
Overtake Roast Hog
And cross the finish line  by a nose"

Great to meet newcomers and chat to them about the community and *try* to describe just how awesome Yelp is. You really have to experience it for yourself... so come on then, get out, get Yelpin' and we'll see you at the next event.

Mighty fine shindig.

Also, I'm glad that I wore my headphones all night and looked like a total douchebag, because it means I still have my headphones today.

Plus, if I am lucky, lots of people will remember me as the guy who wore headphones for no reason and looked like a total douchebag.

Fame is fame.

Loved the hoggy goodness, the veggie goodness, the beery goodness, the ginny goodness and the cakey goodness.

Happy birthday Yelp! You throw a good party.

A truly epic night.  Islington Metal Works was the perfect venue for this.

The 'tea party' in the garden was a brilliant idea!
The Live Music was great!
The pig on a spit was fantastic as was the rest of the food!
In fact, this was a phenominal party!

Yelp London is absolutely and without a doubt the most impressive party machine on the planet.  Many thanks to all the ambasadors that organised it and ran it so well; the tea and cake ladies; the bar staff; the food staff and everyone that attended it for making it such a fantastic night.

My first London Yelp Event--

I have to admit this was an absolutely yelptastic night, everything from the grass floors and teacups to the gin juice and oysters was brilliant!

I loved the different themed spaces along with the extensive amount of food an booze to choose from!

Although it was a huge crowd-I definitely met some great people and am diggin the London yelp crowd!

Nice touch on the goody bags and yelp chap stick!

Happy B-day London Yelp--Thanks for yet another wonderful night! :)

Judging from the fact that it is nearly midday and mine is only the fourth review of Yelp's Burst Birthday to be posted, I'm guessing the after-party was every bit as epic as the main event and you're all still curled up in little hung-over balls in your beds... and I can't say that I'm not jealous :)

Like Jem, the Yelp Burst Birthday was truly, truly, truly outrageous. Each room had a distinctly different vibe, and the whole venue was packed full of food and drink stations, music, ambiance, and festively-attired Yelpers. To be honest, I didn't even get to try any of the amazing-looking food because I was so busy flitting around, exploring the space, chatting with my Yelp brethren and generally rocking out.

I am so deeply impressed with the organisation and thought that went into this event. Big ups to Lizzie, Leon, Laura, and everyone else who made it happen--I am seriously in awe of your creative and managerial skills to put together an event like this.

Also, big props to my buddy Alan J., who braved the weather in the name of looking FAB-U-LOUS in his leather chaps and tighty-whities. I.... I'm just.... It was like............ I really have no words to describe that outfit.

By the end of the night, I'd inherited a 30lb cement garden gnome and a new philosophy on throwing parties: Fresh grass should be a part of every indoor gathering because, Oh Em Gee, fresh grass smell is the BESTTHINGEVAR.

This was a great night, from the hog roast, Freedom Lager (Americans don't have a monopoly on this word), the Welsh policeman, Makers Mark, and the indoor/outdoor tea party.

I was lucky enough to have a sneak preview of this bash last Sunday, so I must give a big thank you to Laura, Lizzie and Leon for their efforts in making the night possible. The only downers were not finding the hat with the upside down Yelp sticker and being unable to come up with decent gnome jokes for Chris O (a rolling gnome gathers no moss, takes a gnome to know a gnome, a gnome in the hand is worth two in the bush).

Happy Birthday Yelp!!

I would just like to open this by saying I had to be at work at 9.30 this morning, and I lied my ass off about being under the weather to disguise my uber hangover. Whilst I felt a tad guilty about all their concern, I wouldn't have missed last night for a million dollars (because even if I threw a party with a million dollars, it wouldn't be as yelptastic as last night!!!!)

This event went beyond 5 stars....it went beyond 6 stars....I think seven stars for 7 types of drinks is quite appropriate!!! and the seven paracetemols I had to pop throughout the day!

Just some other things that randomly happened that tickled me pink:
The cop and robber bit, especially when Tischa B. confronted him about certain past performances.

My green Mask....hell yeah!

The salmon-wasabi things...uh, I need those in my life. No SERIOUSLY, where did you guys find them because I may have to credit card about 2 dozen of them.

Slim Jim's bartenders....especially at the afterparty. And the cinnamon on top of the rum bunch. and the tea cups in the G&T room. Everything about the presentation of the alcohol actually (and the alcohol itself).

Mostly, I love the fact that I got to see everyone that night that I love madly...Leon, Lizzie, Laura, Tischa, Suzanne H., Eric J., and OF COURSE, Sam F. Seriously, 3Ls, you set the bar damn high for this one. Brava, my loves, BRAVA!

Everyone looked gorgeous - the stars really shone at last night's party! I had a great time, thanks to Yelp UK and the CMs who make it so special.

The highlights for me?
- photo booth!
- VEGGIE TABLLLLLLE
- free vino
- live music - stand up bass? nice!
- those parsnip chips!
- signing up for zipcar and getting a free toy mini cooper (thanks larissa!)
- hog roast with apple sauce YUMMMMM
- seeing all my fave Yelpers in one room!

...and after all that, I feel like I barely scratched the surface!

Happy First Birthday BritYelp :)

This was definitely epic. The hog roast and the haloumi burgers and the Freedom beer and the cake and the frozen yogurt and the salmon and the guacamole were all fantastic appetizers. The Makers Mark made for a perfect dinner.

The venue was rad as well- every room looked and felt great, and the music was good as well. Truly a great job by all involved.

The only downside is that I never found the Yelp hat with the upside-down sticker....

Just got back from Yelp's first birthday bash with my girlfriend at Islington Metal works and it was A.W.E.S.O.M.E.!

The venue is situated on a back street kinda directly behind Angel tube station (as you come out of the station take a left, then left again) and it's made up of 3 distinctive and unique areas.

The first space was decorated like a garden party with REAL grass, benches, gnomes, live music and LOTS of booze served in English tea cups. It had a true summery Gin & Tonic or Pimms style feel, despite being indoors.

The next room has the atmosphere of Covent Garden, but without the gawping tourists (just gawping Yelpers). It had an open courtyard feel to it with cobbled floor, archways and a real-ish looking tube that contained a cocktail bar. Food served included spit roast pork, frozen yogurt and some sort of very tasty potato spiral things.

The last room was also very cool and had a classic English rock feel about it with framed photographs on the wall, an open bar and a table stacked with edible treats. There was also a photo booth dishing out freebie sets of six shots and an array of funky hats to make yourself look uber cool.

All in all, Yelp has done a GREAT job at throwing a fantastic 1st birthday bash without over branding the event or throwing too much garbage down your throat.

Well done Yelp, I look forward to next year!

So, what can I say? So many folks have already said it, but I've just got to add my 2 cents..

Well, the party was just totally, without a shadow of a doubt, one of if not the best party I've been to!! It was just amaaazing!
With the cool Yelp Sandwich boxes lining the entrance way, and the Yelp helium filled baloons in the entrance, you could already see the 'garden party' where the G+T was taking place.. Honestly the Mad Hatter would have been proud of that tea party, with cakes, lawns, and hosts and hostesses that really looked the part.

Then after whizzing past the Zip car (and temporarily stopping to sign up for the fantastic chauffeur driven service to the after party), making a pit stop at the cloak room check in, and then heading into the main 'dining' space, there was just so much choice.

From the vegetarian tapas style burgers offered up by the vege table, with a massive Yelp plastered on the wall behind them, there was then the pork roast, and literally, I kid you not, there was a huge full on hog roasting away, being freshly carved.  In the corner next to it, was the awesome Crisps on a Stick stand, with a bus, in the middle of the room, busker style musicians playing centre stage, and a bar behind them, being served out of what looked like an old tube carriage.  The room next door housed a true table of delights, filled with delicacies such as salmon sashimi, nachos, with some great choices of dips, and some very cool oysters, so not what you'd expect at a party ;)

To top it off, there was foosball, custom rum, which I heard was excellent (though being a teetotaller, I abstained, as per usual!), and a photobooth.

To wrap up the delectable delights, there was some great Frozen Yogurt, which was just yum yum, back in the main room.

Truly, it was yelp personified, in that party, with all the niche, quirky yet ever so cool spots all around the place..

My night was capped off with my sign up to ZipCar.. now fingers crossed, I'm hoping to win that trip to San Francisco ;)

Laura, Lizzie, Leon, hats off to you all... It was one most bodacious party!! Loved it!  Now don't know how you're possibly going to top that one!

WOW - First off, major props to Laura, Lizzie and Leon. You guys put on a helluva show (and have gained yourself a bonified new Yelper in me!)

All you Yelpers were fantastic. I've done quite a few events with Zipcar and I can honestly say that I've never seen such an enthusiastic and dedicated crowd in London as I did last night. Major props to all involved! Oh, and I'd like to echo just how cool the turf-floor was! Inspired.

Warning - gratuitous plug ahead (but for your benefit!) If you still want to win that trip to San Fran to see where Yelp was born and to get a free day driving about town in a convertible MINI Cooper (seriously, sea air, California sun, amazing In N Out burgers at the drive through... need I say more??) you can still enter at http://zipcar.co.uk/ye... (and if you use promo code zipuk25, we will throw £25 in driving credit your way to practice your best "singing in the car at the top of your lungs" voice here in London!!)

Again, MAJOR thanks to the Yelp crew and HAPPY BIRTHDAY! See you all this year!

Yelp always throws great parties from start to finish...and even  the follow-up! Greatly appreciate the hospitality shown throughout the night and appreciated the fact that we didn't have to wait out in the cold even though we got there a little early. There was something for everyone there from a tea party in a cute mock-up garden, to a whole pig on a spit, to a good array of vegetarian fare, to expertly-created cocktails to frozen yogurt! We got to sample great food and drink from local businesses and will definitely check them out again soon. Well done, Yelp!

seriously guys could that party have been any more fun? I know I said it before, but if that party had been any more fun it would have been something illegal.
I was soooo beyond impressed with the entire do. I could really see the creativity BEAMING out of the 3 l's in this entire shindig. and I loved all decorations. If i EVER get married, i want my wedding to be exactly like this event.
I want to say that I can TOP sarah b/c I had to wake up for work at 5 am the next day (and I wasn't smart like larissa or Linzi by asking for the day/morning off) but I threw all exhaustion to the wind and was a complete glutton and it was totally worth it.
the veggietable was my non-stop snacking of choice. second up it was my mission to try every single cake in the tea room, my favorite being the lil pound cakes.
but i think my FAVORITE had to be the blue grass band! and i would have spent the entire party in the photo booth if there weren't just as many people as me waiting to do the same. what jerks! haha.
YOu guys REALLY set the bar for this one, and I totally expect next years to be EVEN BIGGER! but I honestly have no idea how you are going to top that.... seriously.

Great work Yelp Team!  This was the birthday party of the decade - great food, great music, great drinks, great people.  LOVED the photo booth, as well as Lizzie's tea party room (note to self: organic gin is just as dangerous as regular gin, it just goes down quicker).  Thanks for inviting all of us and I'm already looking forward to next year!
