I've finally pin pointed what it is that's wrong with Wudon!! It's not the food, it's not the service ... It's how uninviting and "cold" the general environment is! What I mean by cold is that the staff members are completely unwelcoming and insincere with their service!
Let's begin the story. So Gian and I were looking for a place to eat after spending the whole day walking about Glasgow. We ended up at Wudon for some odd reason; it wasn't my first choice but I figured we should give it another go to see how it's been like.
Upon arrival, we were "greeted" by the owner (I think) of the restaurant, who had a chronic grumpy face. Like he literally had a deep dent in between his eyebrows from frowning! He seated us at a four-persons table beside the kitchen entrance and disabled elevator ... No it was not a comfortable place. I insisted on moving to a different table once one freed up, and we eventually did.
There were 2 waitresses serving and they just seemed stressed out like 80% of the time and always seemed like they were in a rush! Ok I get that it's a Sunday night and you're busy but this is the hospitality industry, you should at least pretend like you care about how you're making your customers feel! A smile would help too?
The food was delicious tho! Me and Gian had the Tom yam udon with prawn and edamame on the side. They made a great broth and it was big in portions too so at least this saved this experience. Gian also tried the rice green tea which he really liked! Altogether it was about £11 per person which is not too bad.
But again, I'm not a fan of the cold behaviour! If the staff members have a black stormy cloud hovering over their heads, obviously that cloud transfers onto their customers!
Overall is give Wudon a 3.5 but since .5 doesn't exist, a 3 it is!Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 08 Apr 2015Previous reviewI had a craving for something "soup-y". Not a blended and chunky soup commonly found in a Glaswegian cafe, but something closer to home for me. I thought that Wudon would be a good option since it was close to where I was at the time (sunbathing in the botanical gardens) and I was super hungry so I could walk there in a jiffy!
There, we were greeted by staff who were friendly and extremely attentive (and the attentiveness was very consistent throughout the dinner, which was surprising and impressive). The staff were really great!
I ordered the original ramen with a side of Tobiko sushi and edamame, and a blossoming jasmine dragon tea to compliment my very eastern asian meal. The partner ordered the katsu udon (I think? I'm horrible with names) and a sushi that looks cray coohl (something with buckwheat noodles and looks like an alien).
In terms of flavour, I have nothing to complain about. My rating is down to a 4 because I was slightly disappointed with the portion of Tobiko sushi though. I mean, not only did I get just 2, the 2 were tiny (like really tiny). And my ramen soup was ok but I was expecting a more savoury broth. Not bad but not memorable.
I was mostly impressed by the tea! I loved it. It was flavourful and beautiful! A bit pricey though, £2.70 a cup, but the hot water was refillable.
It's an ok restaurant. I'll def go back to try other dishes! - Emma J.Glasgow98298817 Aug 2015
After trying some of Wu Don's sushi at the Tempo Tea Bar event, I had to go try more. It turns out that this is my dad's favorite restaurant and him and my step-mum invited me to dine with them one Saturday night. The place was rammed and very hot. We decided to go for some fire cracker sushi pieces with the soy beans and crackers. This was phenomenal, fresh, tasty and full of flavor.
My dad and Step mum opted for some of the larger dishes, when they arrived the steaming bowls of noddles which were filled with chicken and lovely vegetables smelt incredible.
I went for more sushi, with some salmon and rice pieces and deep fried king prawns and chili dip. For someone who didn't really like sushi, it didn't get any better than this. I've never tasted food like it.
After dinner we had a look at the sweet menu and I went for the apples in batter with cinnamon ice cream. My step mum went for the nutella in crispy rolls with coconut ice cream. For me the apple lacked something, it was a little bland to be honest and not even the ice cream could rescue it. Suzanne's was incredible and I would definitely try that next time.
Overall a fab experience and I will be back to try more sushi!Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Austen M.Glasgow528680200211 May 2015
Sunday dinner does not need to be a roast all the time. Last night we went for a spot of dinner at Wudon. I had heard good things, so I was very much looking forward to it. We arrived with no booking and they fitted us in easily, sadly the fitting in was to a tiny table behind a pillar that had very little leg room. In hindsight I should of asked to move as by the end I was pretty uncomfortable.
Starters came first and they were very tasty, we shared Ap Soong which is shredded duck with crispy noodles and wrapped in lettuce leaves. It was quite mild, but then was good once I added some chilli sauce on top. We also shared a beef dish of slices of sirloin in teriyaki sauce. Cooked to perfection they were both a great way to kick off the meal. At this point I was having a Ashai with my meal, but once that ran out I decided just to move to tap water. Trudie M had chosen to do the same after her drink was finished, but no matter how many times we asked we could only get a tap water to share. They just kept filling up the same glass. Not an issue for us, but could be for other diners going out for a meal and not actually wanting to share their drink. It was very strange, but probably just some miscommunication.
For mains, I am going to say that I must of picked wrong. Some food on other tables looked very nice and I was inspired to choose the Chicken chilli with rice which I would not normally go for. Sadly it was lacking flavour for me and to be honest tasted a wee bit bland and like a standard sweet and sour dish. Again I chucked some chilli on top, but it still just had no real zing from any other flavours to help make it into a good dish. It tasted like a standard sweet and sour dish you would get from an average takeaway. (I hate sweet and sour for being too boring)
Wudon started off great, but ended up a wee bit disappointing. I left with sore legs from the lack of space and also feeling like I had picked the wrong main course. I won't rush back, but if I do go back at some point I will certainly be asking what the staff would recommend as when I left I saw some diners tucking into some really interesting looking dishes, which they seemed to be loving.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 265344623 Sept 2016
Only been in for a takeaway - but gosh, it was amazing!
One of my friends lives 5 minutes from the place and when I suggested Japanese food she opted for this - best choice ever! We both went for chicken katsu and rice, and i also had salmon nigiri and she got a selection of sushi instead.
We waited quite a while to be honest, but the restaurant was quite busy, so it is understandable.
Everything really nice, and price really good as well. Can't wait to go back and sit in having a proper meal!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 26 Jul 2015Updated review
Wudon is still a regular favorite for us, and I'm bumping them up to five stars because they've consistently provided great service and excellent food. They are always extremely careful with making sure my food is gluten-free, even going so far as to bring the wasabi packaging out so I could make sure that it was safe to eat. They've also been great in providing great vegetarian options for my companion. You can't go wrong at Wudon - see my previous review for my favourite dishes if you want some recommendations!
Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 06 Mar 2015Previous reviewAnother favorite spot, I find myself at Wudon once a month or so. While they don't have a gluten-free menu, they will help you find dishes that can be modified, which includes sushi and noodles. Highlights for me have been the Honey Floss sushi roll, which is coated on the outside in pork floss - sort of little stringy, rope-like bits of dry pork which are really tasty; and just the fact that they have a bottle of gluten-free soy sauce that they will bring you for sushi dipping! I can't remember the names, but I've had a very good rice bowl with chicken, and a really nice noodle stir-fry, also with chicken. They are also vegetarian friendly, if you're not into all the pork and chicken.
One really nice thing about Wudon is they take care in how they plate and present food - it comes out of the kitchen looking really lovely. You really feel like you're eating something special! Service there has always been good, though they do get quite busy on Friday nights (make a booking!) - Briony C.Glasgow15061293100676 Aug 2013
Decided on Wudon for dinner before a gig at Oran Mor as it was nearby and I hadn't tried it. Showed up at 5.30pm on a Monday and got a table without any trouble. The place is pretty plainly decorated but in a nice, clean way.
We ordered a bunch of the wee dishes to share:
Heung Dai Gee (£6.00) - scallops with garlic, soy & coriander served on the shell.
Teriyaki Beef (£5.50) - marinated pieces of sirloin beef with teriyaki sauce.
Ga Lay Kwok (£4.50) - parcels filled with tender chicken, potato & onions in a mild curry sauce.
Saw Choi Tempura (£4.50) - aubergine, sweet potato, mushroom, asparagus & Japanese soba noodles in tempura batter.
Sake Sashimi (£5.80) - slices of raw salmon served with daikon hair, pink ginger and wasabi.
All of these dishes were really good with the exception of the beef which just didn't taste like very much at all. Thankfully the scallops and the chicken parcels made up for it as these were both amazing. I also wolfed down the sashimi and really liked it.
The staff were friendly and helpful, and came back to check on us and take more drinks orders regularly. We ordered some more food once we'd finished as Graeme was coming to join us, and when we got the bill for three adults and drinks it was around £20 each, which I thought was pretty good for the amount we ate!
Pretty decent Japanese food and I'd definitely make a return visit to try some more of the small plates.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Auburn L.Glasgow711134551 Aug 2015
I really loved Wudon! The atmosphere was relaxed, the staff truly lovely and the tableware was very funky!
The food was delicious; I usually order Katsu curry if it's my first time at a place as it gives me a good indication of how the food is going to be. Other than not having the usual carrots and potatoes it was fantastic :)
Their selection of Sushi is also quite amazing. I usually just opt for some maki, which they will do for you if you ask, but there are far more interesting options! I wanted to try my boyfriends beef sushi but it was gone before I even thought to ask! The eye of the tiger sushi was the perfect combination for me of Salmon, avocado and maki. Yum!
I was too full for desert but my boyfriend got the chocolate rolls which looked amazing. Spring rolls filled with gooey chocolate, what more could you want?
Their Merlot wine went down quite nicely too!
We arrived about 3pm and left around 4:30pm on Friday and there was a good amount of seating. The place wasn't too quite that we felt we were disturbing people with our conversation or loud enough that we struggled to hear or get a waiters attention. It was just right :)
Overall a great place to eat, price is fairly reasonable, and some parking on the street close to it. I'll definitely be going back!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Darryl R.Glasgow1941543516 Sept 2009First to Review
One word to describe this place? Fresh.
From the flowers to the table surfaces, everything looked very clean and ... fresh. Scarily so, almost. I know it's new, but, there's a fine line between 'clinical' and 'fresh' and poor old Wudon was teetering on the fence quite precariously....eep!
Anyway, so the food? Well the menu promised a 'passion' of home-made cooking - to me it there was a slight hint of an imitation of Wagamama - but why, oh why, do they tell you how many prawns/scallops/bits of food will be found in your dish in brackets at the side!? It's just not cool...
I ordered the King Prawn Tempura Ramen having had similar dishes before in other restaurants. I may have had 3/4 prawns (I can't really remember now) but the majority of the dish was beansprouts. I like beansprouts. I have nothing against them, just that, when my plate is full of them, they become very boring...And bland? Did I mention this was bland? Eurgh.
I don't know if I'd recommend this place or not - maybe I caught the chef on an off day? - but what I can tell you is the number of stars to be found here. (3)Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Caleb D.Nashville, United States72090290714 Dec 2009
A new addition to the already pretty damn tasty array of restaurants in the west end, Wudon brings a fresh angle with the addition of Japanese Cuisine to the ever expanding smorgasbord of nations.
Offering grub in the same style as Wagamama ( only not in the annoying school cafeteria style seating arrangement), Wudon offers good, fresh Japanese Noodle dishes at an acceptable rate.
We popped in here a week ago with the little one sleeping in her pram to treat ourselves after a night of teething hell. OK its not exactly pram friendly however the staff were excellent in clearing us a path and making sure we were ok and well attended to.
As for the food? Well top notch is a term springs as freshly to mind as the flavour did in my pallet after the first bite. IF you've been to any of the new noodle bars in Glasgow you will know what to expect form the menu, namely a range of broth like dishes with noodles, fresh veg and herbs and some meat if you so desire.....which i do thank yo very much.
You can also choose form a number of dishes such as curies, starters and others, all very tasty.
The funny thing about this place is that whenever we frequent it never appear to be that busy. Which is strange given the location, style (ain't Japanese grub trendy just now?, and the quality. Anyway, to hell with everyone else, me and the other half shall continue to visit Wudon whenever we can trick someone int baby sitting the small one......any fools, sorry, volunteers out there??Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Lisa G.Glasgow583263255 Apr 2010
I agree with Chris on this one, why is this place never busy, it's awesome!
Price wise it is in line with similar establishments but to me the food seems fresher and tastier. This restaurant is always spotless as well and I like the normal seating arrangements as opposed to Wagamama's which has you encroaching upon the personal space of complete strangers.
Wudon is run by the three Wu sisters, one of whom is an interior designer and you can tell this from the interior of the restaurant. It is warm, inviting and manages to feel luxurious and relaxed at the same time.
As Chris mentioned, you can expect to get all the usual noodley fair at Wudon's but they also do delicious Bento Boxes for lunch for £6.50 which are Japanese style lunch boxes to takeaway. The freshly made sushi is also fantastic or you can try a few things from the "wee plates" section of the menu which allows you to try a few different things, tapas style.
Next time you are sauntering around Great Western Road you HAVE to give Wudon a go. It is as good a noodle bar as you are going to find outside of Hong Kong!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
