High Summer aside, Rye Bay is a pleasingly remote part of the South East. We all know about Camber Sands, but to the West, just the other side of Rye Harbour, is the less well known Winchelsea Beach. It offers big views of the bay and is pleasingly stepped up to a sea wall. Whilst it is pebbly rather than sandy, it's quieter too. Today, an August Sunday, there were no more than twenty people visible in total. Some were fishing from the shore and it was fascinating to watch, most simply enjoyed the tranquility. Immediately behind the sea wall there's copious free parking and behind this miles of salt marsh and grazing sheep. Lovely - look at the photo's! I'd recommend you bring your food & drink with you. Brighton it's not. Foodies will appreciate the farm shop in Pett & the decent fishmonger in Winchelsea Beach (a weird muddle of bungalows nearby) selling local plaice & lobster. Nice. Nicer still is that it's only 20 odd miles away from my cottage...................
