This is the nicest archive study room that I've come across! It's directly underneath a beautiful old ceiling/the roof of the building (the Vestry House museum) and has lovely views out over the garden and grounds. Not that you'll care because you'll be busy!

The staff are very friendly and very helpful. It is a joy to come to this local archive!
Just call to book an appointment. Let them know roughly what you are after and they may be able to give you an idea of what they have. You will need to book the microfilm/fiche viewer specifically if you need it.

They also have an interesting photograph collection of Walthamstow.
Best of all is the name index: make sure to check these wooden catalogue drawers for anyone you are researching: you will save yourself a heck of a lot of time (I speak from experience {cough}).

This is an old-fashioned archive, upstairs in Vestry House Museum, in the attic, not the best place to keep priceless artifacts, as it's hot in summer and freezing in winter. If you cannot manage the stairs, they will arrange somewhere in the museum for the consultation.
The place feels like an schoolroom, with shelves and mismatched furniture. There are few modern readers, I got a headache using the film reader, which had to be re-focused constantly. The archive has many original parish records, as well as many printed books and maps. They also hold several card indexes which are not available anywhere else.
You need to book your visit and have an idea of which records you want to access.
They allow laptops with prior permission, but charge if you want to photograph anything. They do copy document on request.
