Neukölln, Berlin, Germany
This is an old brewery area. The different parts (old and new) all belong to the so-called Viktoriaquartier. It contains old, totally renovated buildings and lofts, under monumental protection, as well as newly built appartment buildings. A lot of construction work is going on (2011+2012), and there are still a few lofts and appartments available for sale. Selling companies are quite different in behaviour. The biggest one of them is Baywobau. My personal opinion is: they are not very friendly, but you have to deal with them if you want to buy from them (bring your own agent or lawyer). The most up-market parts are the original buildings around Schmiedehof and Eberhard-Roters-Platz. You can find several successful artists, musicians and people from the film industry living there. Penthouses and attic flats there are exceptional.
The Brauhofgarten area is nice, too, but consists of modern appartment blocks and might be a little bit too constricted. The whole Viktoriaquartier is a car-free zone. A parking garage is available underneath.
The area belongs to the Kreuzberg district. Within this district, there is a hill called Kreuzberg, too. This is where you will find Viktoria Quartier. It is one of the highest places in Berlin, in terms of altitude as well as quality of living. Many visitors come during the summer season to see the old brewery and the close-by Kreuzbergpark with its monument on top of the hill.
