Reasonably priced mens & women's quality vintage clothing
Top Banana and many of the shops on York Road share the ethos of the old-fashioned shop keeper. The staff like to have a natter with the customers, offer them a hot drink if they're having a good mooch and often give discounts if you buy more than one item.
There aren't many places to buy quality vintage clothing for men so Top Banana has an edge over most other shops. The focus is mainly American vintage from the 60s-70s and the majority of the stock reflects this, but they have everything from 40s to 90s - you just need to have a good rummage!
Fans of converse and vans if you haven't heard of Top Banana where have you been?! They have LOADS and prices range from £15-£25.
Prices are very reasonable but don't expect bargain basement prices like £1 etc.. this is quality merchandise which would set you back a pretty penny down south! Grab it while you can before someone else does!
While you're here pop next door to Cherry Reds for some yummy food or two doors down to Polar Bear Records,
The name says it all really. Large range of vintage clothes and footwear at a low price. Good selection of Converse and Vans in various sizes. Rails full of vintage knitwear, polos, shirts and jackets with designer labels. Although the shop is quite small it's crammed with merchandise. The owner (Josh) is very helpful and friendly. A must for vintage lovers or anyone looking to grab a bargain. I bought a pair of converse for £22. Check it out.
Vintage gold converse, weathered denim shirts and an abundance of classic pieces from yesteryear - Top Banana offers something that few clothing stores do these days - and that's authenticity.
They have some really nice stuff, some of it I imagine would make you look like Tony Soprano, a 70s mobster or Dirk Diggler. Their range is enormous for a small shop - from vintage varsity, leather and demin jackets to knitwear, polos and an array of slick shirts.
All of the items I have bought from Top Banana have a timeless quality about them that only get better with age.
With Top Banana you're guaranteed to get some fine clothing for a fair price that even a young Jean-Paul Belmondo would give a nod of approval to.You will leave a (fashion) law unto yourself, swaggering like a don, whistling 'ain't no stopping us now' and ready to share your new-found slickness with the world. At least I did.
Birmingham's always had a bit of a thing going for vintage clothes with a healthy mod revivalist streak seeming to somehow stay alive whatever the weather. Top Banana is there to supply this demand with it's bright yellow frontage and stacks of secondhand clothes (slight aside - what's the difference between secondhand and vintage? Does anybody know?)
There always seems to be a massive selection of Converse, a particular favourite of mine. There's also loads of clothes by brands such as Lacoste and Levis (another personal favourite), as well as loads of stuff like truckers caps or t shirts advertising random businesses in the American West if you're into that kind of look. I'm not a clothes obsessive though I do like my style, and I think it's fair to say that Top Banana do a better job than most vintage clothing stores. Unlike a lot of vintage clothing stores, there seems to be hardly any tat, a good thing seeing as the shop is so small. At this point in the review it's probably worth mentioning that they two shops on the same street with the other one focusing on dresses, though surprisingly I haven't been to that one. I'd imagine it's a good shop just like this one. Keep up the good work!
Birmingham Vintage Clothes Fairs

There are 3 vintage clothes fairs that happen in Birmingham every month. They sell clothes for ladies and men from the 1920's to 1980's and the prices are very cheep. They also sell jewellery, shoes, hats and handbags. There is clothes sale in the soak, bristol road, selly oak on Thurs 17th January 08 from 11 - 4.30pm. There is clothes fair on the 4th Saturday of every month in the Community Centre, Alcester Road, Moseley from 10 -4pm and another one on the 1st Saturday of every month at the Hare and Hounds Pub, High Street, Kings Heath from 11 - 4.30pm. They also sell really good fancy dress outfits. There are also stalls available to rent
Located just off Kings Heath high street on York Road, a short walk from the Hare and Hounds pub is one of my favourite individual stores in all of Birmingham, Top Banana. I first started visiting this wonderful little vintage store on my lunch hour as I worked nearby and often needed to kill time. I soon became hooked and my regular visits to have a browse morphed into visits in which I would spend my hard earned cash on some good old vintage gear. You aren't likely to miss Top Banana, with its distinctive yellow shop front, and what you find behind the door is just as remarkable. They have a great selection for such a small retailer, everything from leather jackets and polo t shirts to Converse trainers you can often find nowhere else in Birmingham or beyond. On top of all this they have the friendliest owner you are likely to meet who welcomes all with a smile. This is a well run business which really sticks out in what can be a bland Kings Heath area at times. If vintage is your style, then Top Banana is sure to float your boat!
