This really is a lovely hotel. It almost has a bed and breakfast feel. We had a large party with 8 rooms. There was a bit of confusion with our check-in, giving things a rough start. The staff wanted to know who was going to be in each room. After 12 hours of traveling and 8 hours of sightseeing, we were exhausted and not in much of a mood to do that.
But it was all uphill from there. They have old fashioned keys to get into the rooms. I don't remember the last time I've seen those. Each room is a little different, though beautiful. Our room was very modern, some were more classic. It was neat comparing each one. There was also a little rubber ducky in the bathtubs. The beds were comfortable and they had an american plug in each room, which was so convenient.
The staff were friendly and helpful. The only warning is that if you ask them for a recommendation for a moderately priced restaurant they will likely send you somewhere expensive by American standards because you are staying there, haha.
We had a wonderful experience at the hotel and overall, I would definitely recommend the Stafford.
There are alot of beautiful hotels. The Stafford has to be one of the most beautiful I have even seen.
I stumbled across it during my first trip to London 9 years ago. I fell in love with it instantly. At the time I was poor (relatively speaking), yet determined to stay there even if just for a night.
It came as no suprise that the weather was foul. I've been to London four times. Its never been nice.
I had left all of my things at the youth hostel and decided that I wasn't going to get on the tube and then walk an additional 5-10 blocks to grab my toothbrush and a change of clothes. Grateful that I had worn several layers (scarf, peacoat, sweater, tank top) and had brought my book I enterred The Stafford not knowing what to expect. I didnt touch my book until 2 days later.
At the front desk I was told all of the rooms are "different." I love "different," "diverse", "unique" and any synonym thereof. The man whose name I don't remember and maybe he never told me at all, offered to have a staff person show me a few of the rooms before I settled into one. A few, became 10-12 and I reveled at the color schemes, textures and general charm and style of each of them.
I spent that entire day in the hotel- the bar- my bathtub- the carriage house- the wine cellar- I sort of crashed a wedding- and I even spent sometime lying on the plush carpetting (not what you think!)
I'm certain I dream of The Stafford from time to time.
It will always be one of my very favorite places to stay.
After staying in a number of London Hotels, my family and I have been staying here ever since. My mom has been coming to London since the 1960s and she will not stay anywhere else. We have been staying at this hotel for years-- the service is impecable, the rooms are beautiful, the restaurant and bar are jewels, and the bathrooms are outstanding in every room. Each room is different and unique and there are no "bad" rooms.
If you want a lovely hotel in a fantastic central location where you can walk to everything, look no further.
I just loved it. Everything was perfect. Thank you.
Specialties
The Stafford has an air of timelessness - the feel of a country house with a central London location. Tucked behind Green Park in genteel St James's and surrounded by the shops of Bond Street, Jermyn Street Picadilly and Fortnum & Masons. The hotel is quietly lavish while being warm and welcoming, with period furnishings and antique pieces adorning both bedrooms and public areas. The historic Carriage House rooms are complimented by the 26 new suites in the exclusive Stafford Mews. Both are unrivalled in London with their 17th Century courtyard setting and outdoor space.
Dedicated and dutiful staff play a big part in achieving this delicate balance between professionalism and friendliness. Here is a haven of calm which seems a million miles away from the bustle of Piccadilly just a steps away.
History
Established in 1912
Originally 3 London townhouses dating from the 18th Century the Stafford Main House took it's current form in 1912. During WWII we were home to US and Canadian airforce officers, they sheltered from the Blitz in our 400 year old wine cellars and their legacy remains. The American Bar is festooned with memorabilia dating back 40 years. The 300 year old Carriage House rooms were once the stables of the stately homes nearby and all have their own front door into the historic cobbled courtyard. In 2007 we added 26 new suites in The Stafford Mews and this beautifullly compliments the Carriage House.
Meet the Manager: Stuart P.
General Manager Stuart was born in Lancashire, and is proud of his northern roots, where much of his early career evolved. After leaving school he worked at the renowned Northcote ManorStuart then progressed to become an Assistant Manager with Shire Hotels. By this time the call of the south was beckoning and Stuart moved onto become Hotel Manager of the Vineyard at Stockcross. This led to the position of General Manager of the Devonshire Arms in North Yorkshire. Stuart also achieved an Acorn Award (a young Hoteliers Oscar) only awarded to 30 people in the industry, under the age of 30. After completing four good years at The Devonshire Arms the opportunity to move to London and The Stafford came along - and the rest, as they say, is history. Following three years as Resident Manager at The Stafford and being the No 2 to the Executive Director, Stuart became General Manager in January 2006. Stuart is always on hand to ensure you have a wonderful experience at The Stafford.
