We've been here several times. You have to book. They don't serve drinks at the table, you have to go to the bar. It isn't haute cuisine. It's off the beaten track.
The food is very good quality pub grub and better than many restaurants. The steaks are spendid, the service is good prompt and friendly. The beer (a good selection of Hobson's brews) is well-kept and the wine list is comprehensive.
This evening, avacado prawn and whitebait, salmon mornay, T-bone steak, steak Diane, and a peppered chicken breast with all the trimmings along with four pints, a spritzer and two bottles of sauvignon blanc came to £114. Good value we're going to keep on going.
Despite having a very good meal at the Red Cow we were quite disappointed with the conduct of their barman. My partner and I wanted a quiet meal for our anniversary, but upon arrival it seemed impossible to have a quiet conversation without the very opinionated barman interjecting with his own views on our discussion. We ended up having to sit in silence and listen to someone projecting his thoughts at an increasingly loud volume.
When we were seated at our table, we thought we'd had a lucky escapebut how wrong we were! The barman returned to finish voicing his views whilst we were trying to eat our starters. Fortunately, he was soon ushered away by the very nice lady who took our order.
The food was lovely, but if you do go I would advise you to ring ahead and check that Nick is not working!
