WOW this place is amazing! I booked the upstairs Providores to meet up with someone for the first time, and this is the ideal place. Downstairs they don't take reservations and it is more casual, but upstairs there is loads of room and it wasn't even crowded on a Sunday. The tables were half full and the service was excellent. It was relaxing, we could sit back and talk, and it was the exact opposite of my experience at Honey & Co.
As for the food, it was equally stellar. We both got the Turkish eggs, as I had read great reviews about it, and it did not disappoint. For anyone that's never had it, there is oil floating around but it is not spicy, and the yogurt tasted quite like hollandaise sauce to me (but probably healthier!) There are two eggs and it comes with two slices of either granary or sourdough toast... could have done with another egg, I think, as I did get a bit hungry later in the afternoon.
I also ordered an iced coffee and it wasn't exactly what I expected... I had in mind an iced americano, but instead it came rather frothy and blended, but luckily they hadn't put in sugar, so it wasn't a total disaster. Overall, I was so impressed and would definitely recommend this restaurant when you want to impress. There were a lot of menu items under 10 pounds, which I also think is quite a steal! Marylebone High Street is also just beautiful, so there is plenty of places nearby to pop by afterward.
The perfect night to celebrate Dad's birthday. Taken upstairs to the more formal restaurant, we were sat in the centre of the room, which buzzed with the chatter of delighted dinners. The room is clean, fresh and with just enough room for the friendly serving staff to manoeuvre.
The menu is a delight. Rather than select a traditional starter and main course, you're recommended to pick a few dishes but not in a tapas style. This helps solve the problem of choosing between dishes but doesn't really provide that much assistance as there was literally nothing on the menu that I didn't want to try.
Ultimately I plumped for the salad (nice but an error as other dishes were tastier), tuna and beef. I was also able to try the soufflé, scallops, pork, a fish dish and the dahl. All excellent. Top tip is to go with other people, and dive into their dishes as well as your own.
This is my favourite restaurant in Marylebone High Street, and one of my favourites in London. On this visit, after an excellent talk on Kim Philby at Daunts, we shared the tapas plate, a Burrata salad and a sesame tuna salad. All absolutely first rate - strong yet subtle flavours, well-balanced and presented beautifully.
We shared a 400ml carafe of NZ Pinot Noir (they had about ten wines available in that size), which is such a good way to go for a quick dinner.
The best turkish eggs ever!! Their coffe is good too. I always go for breakfast so can't say really much on the rest of the menu. Everything looks fresh and yummy.
A nice, cute and cosy place. They serve high quality, flavourful dishes that aren't too heavy. Service was average, I would not go here if I was really hungry.
Three orders I tried:
Qunoit salad - There was something overpowering about one of the ingredients which I don't like. I wouldn't recommend this dish.
Bruschetta- great cheese with a spicy kick would recommend if you like your food a little bit spicy
Beef pesto- very flavourful dish, pesto, olives and beef really compliment each other. This was the best out of the three we ordered.
I would comeback here, this restaurant is Dikaios approved!
The menu was so expansive we did not know what to do with ourselves in the beginning but we eventually figured it out.
This is a small restaurant and the seating is a bit cramped downstairs as there is a high communal table in the middle of the floor that probably seats about 10 or so, along with the normal dining tables which probably seat another 10.
Out of the lengthy menu we went with the plate of jamon, the sake cured salmon, the Scottish scallops, and the bruschetta. All were quite excellent, and if the rest of the menu were this good we would not think anything of eating here multiple times a week.
The food arrived at a fairly rapid cadence and the wait staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about all of the items on the menu - the bruschetta and the sake cured salmon were their recommendations.
These guys here have a cosy and warm atmosphere - space is constrained but there is a constant flow of people shuttling in and about.
I had the Turkish eggs from Changa restaurant in Istanbul - two poached eggs on whipped yoghurt with hot chilli butter and sourdough or seeded granary toast, a most unusual and exotic breakfast, especially from a mainstream & European sounding name. It is heartier than it sounds and the combination of textures and flavours is quite unusual. Great recommendation from my friend! Combined with their lovely coffee and good service, I think this is a place that I feel comfortable recommending!
The Providores is one of those restaurants you hear about, mean to try and then just don't get to - at least, that's the way it was for me. I wanted to get there for brunch, I've heard only amazing things but... nope.
However, this Sunday my friend, who loves it, insisted we go. And we went and it was everything and more.
It's a tiny cafe so expect to wait (although the line does move pretty well and they have no problem coming to you at the end of the meal and asking if they can bring the bill. I wish more crowded places would do this to make turnover move faster.) We sat at a communal table in the middle of the room and though it was tight space wise, it wasn't uncomfortable.
The food? My god, the food. Home made, delicious, just a fantastic breakfast all around. I will admit though, I had food envy. My friend got the French toast stuffed with banana and pecans with grilled smoked streaky bacon and vanilla verjus syrup for £9.50. Woah! Giant platter of French toast with deliciously cooked bacon. Seriously perfect. The other person at our table got the hot-smoked salmon, two poached eggs and spinach on walnut toast with yuzu hollandaise for £12.20. Two large pieces of toast with eggs and salmon and sauce. Amazing.
I however got the grilled chorizo with sweet potato and miso hash, a soft boiled egg, garlic labne and star anise cashew nut praline for £10.40. Don't get me wrong, it was tasty but tiny compared to the other two meals. A portion so small I ordered a side of mushrooms just to get a little more food. After waiting half an hour for a seat and then more for the food, I was hungry and this was not going to fill it (especially when looking at the portion sizes of the other two.)
Small piece aside, this place is fantastic. Creative breakfast dishes you won't get anywhere else and service that is top notch. It's reputation is well deserved.
We have heard good reviews about this New Zealand institution in London, so we decided to try for ourselves. The restaurant itself is a bit compact: expect to be sitting elbow to elbow if you are at the high table in the middle, but I think it added to the communal atmosphere of it all.
The service from the staff was professional yet warm and attentive. There was one person "in charge" of the people coming in, so you felt acknowledged even though you would have to wait for a table. She also made sure that there were no "cutters". After our meal, we merely glanced upwards and the waitress knew that we were ready for the bill.
We were there for brunch and we ordered our usual coffees before the meals proper arrived. My wife had the Americano and I had a flat white. Mine tasted a little bitter than usual, but I still enjoyed it.
There were a couple of options which I was torn between ordering. When the time came, I went for the French toast which had an innovative twist: it was like a French toast sandwich with a banana and pecan filling. The bacon was on the side. My wife went for the Turkish eggs, which went well with a couple of pieces of toasted sourdough. We got a side of chorizo, which was probably too much for us, but we tend to get excited and order too much whenever we eat out.
The bill came to just under £35, which seems fair and not outrageous for a brunch out in London.
I'd been wanting to come here for brunch for a while. Unfortunately, you either have to a) reserve several days in advance, b) wake up in time to get there just when it opens, or c) be patient. I wasn't very good at options b or c, but eventually we got a group together and made a reservation.
Unexpected bonus of reserving: you're placed in the upstairs room which is much calmer and more spacious than the downstairs communal table.
The food was phenomenal. I had the grilled chorizo with sweet potato and miso hash, and opted for a scrambled egg rather than the soft-boiled one that was listed on the menu. (4th-grade Andrea was forever scarred by the smell of a classmate's boiled egg after it sat in a lunchbox all day.) There were really tasty toppings as well, light garlic and cashew cremes as well as some greens. The whole dish was imaginative and very, very delicious.
Most of my friends went with the same option, though others also got the fry-ups and everyone was happy. They also enjoyed the smoothies and a very pretty potato cake dessert.
The place loses just one star on a few things: 1) my meal was a bit on the small side. On the one hand, I didn't have that guess-its-time-to-go-back-to-sleep-from-this-food-coma reaction that brunch can sometimes provoke, which was a welcome change. However, I was still somewhat hungry after eating, which wasn't ideal given that the place 2) wasn't cheap if you started needing to add some rather pricey sides. 3) The coffee was just average; I think our fancy work coffee machine makes a better latte.
It's also worth noting this isn't a place to linger -- they warned us in advance they would need the table at 1. I get why they need to do this and don't blame them for it in the least, but when they told us we needed to leave by 1, we didn't really appreciate being chased out at 12:45.
All-in-all, the place would have been a resounding 5-star if not for the few issues identified above. Even with these minor concerns, I could never give it less than 4 stars given just how awesome the food was.
This is probably the most ludicrously overpriced place to have breakfast in London. I had the grilled streaky bacon, which would have been fine £9.80 aside except that the bacon needed to go back to the kitchen to be cooked and it was all a bit small. £6 was also a bit steep for a grilled chorizo. A split grilled sausage on a saucer needs to be a bit more impressive at that price.
The coffee is fine but really, you're going to walk out having spent £40 on breakfast for two and it's just not special enough to warrant that.
I really understand why this place is so overly packed. Breakfast innovation! GOOD breakfast innovation, even!
I was meeting a friend for brunch and she recommended us going here. Good thing I obliged or I would have missed out on a little gem.
The Tapa Room is a small room so we were quite lucky to secure a table when we first arrived - a minute later and a small line had formed outside the place.
I ordered the Turkish breakfast - an odd combination of two poached eggs on whipped yoghurt with hot chili butter accompanied by sourdough toast. It sounded quite odd so I decided I'd give it a go. One of my better decisions to date! The silky smooth yogurt and the perfectly boiled and runny egg yolk go extremely well together with the yogurt stopping the yolk from running wild, but allow you to combine it as you like. The chili butter gives it the 'kick' that the dish needs. Perfect!
I could eat this everyday, but I think my waistline would really disagree..
I had heard so much about this place and kept seeing it in the top London brunch lists so I was very eager to try it.
I have been four time so far, always for brunch on weekends, and I am never disappointed. I always make sure to book 4-5 days in advance to be able to choose my time. Booking is more than recommended unless you are willing to wait. Service is fast and good. Your coat is taken when you arrive and the waiters are professional and helpful.
I always have the two-egg, salmon, spinach with hollandaise sauce or the two-eggs fry up with veggies. Amazing. I personally like to ask for the hollandaise on the side because they put too much otherwise.
The fruit salad is unique and super tasty with original flavors.
The smoothies are a good drink to order while waiting for the main.
Cannot wait to come back and have the Turkish eggs everyone talks about!
When you book you will be sitted upstairs with a booking fee/person added to your bill - that is why I take out one star. A fee for booking? Seriously?
In a nutshell: Obsessed
Brunch? Yes please.
Thick slices of toast lightly fried with mushed banana slices in between to give the juiciness to the toast, pecans for nuttiness, crispy bacon for the highlight and all that on a thin layer of verjus syrup. It was absolutely incredible. I never had a french toast that good.
My friend and I split the french toast and eggs royale. The eggs were very good - worth a try if you're not willing to experiment a little.
Definitely try the guava smoothie - it's absolutely delicious and light.
Service? Good and attentive, despite of them being packed on a Sunday brunch time.
Would definitely come back and try their turkish eggs and waffles!
We ate during a fairly busy lunch hour. Downstairs was packed but they told us that for a slight charge (kinda weird) we could eat upstairs. I'm reading that upstairs is more-formal. I suppose it is... non-communal tables with white table clothes. But don't let that scare you... not all that formal... two or three of us wearing t-shirts and no one even remotely giving us the stink-eye. Maybe they save the stink-eye for people wearing t-shirts at DINNER.
Anyway, we had the Turkish eggs (see pic) and the chorizo/egg thingy (see pic)... damn. Damn. It was like discovering a color you didn't know existed. Looked beautiful, tasted beautiful. It didn't hurt that I was in London, on a sunny May day, with my wife, whom I love.
This place reminds me of every good NYC brunch place as it is loud, crowded and DELICIOUS. It was also pleasantly efficient despite the lengthy queue that awaited us upon arrival so do not be turned off by what appears to be an impossible wait.
I had the Turkish eggs, which were incredibly tasty but VERY rich. The poached egg + yoghurt + toast combo was very very pleasing. My companion had the Thai waffles, which was also very good and actually refreshing tasting.
Also try their beverages and get ready for a superspicy Bloody Mary. I had the passionfruit bellini, which was delicious to smell and consume. The venue is rather tightly packed so you will be sitting in close quarters with strangers. Can't wait to try the rest of the menu!
Again with the tapas - I'm starting to worry about all the cured meats and cheeses I'm consuming. But I think of Providores more as a wine bar than a tapas restaurant. It's also great for people watching thanks to the large communal tables. The other night there was a man who arrived alone and parked himself on one of the stools right in the middle of the action. He confided that while he didn't like eating alone, he enjoyed going to Providores by himself when he's in town on business because of the buzzing friendly atmosphere that makes it comfortable for everyone.
Things I love about Providores:
*you rarely have to wait more than 30 minutes for a spot at the wine bar
*they have great New Zealand wine by the glass
*the service is never rushed - it's a great place to go with a friend or a first date
My only caution is that it doesn't take reservations (downstairs at least) and the portion sizes are pretty small. An order of spring rolls is two small pieces. So you're better off going with the tapas samplers or a random smattering of appetizers than trying to do a full meal.
I'll admit my familiarity with Peter Gordon is limited, but with a large wall of his cookbooks staring me in the face as I ate my meal, I got the feeling that the Providores is as much about the name behind the restaurant as it is the food.
Judging by the line to eat Sunday brunch and the manner in which people were crammed into the downstairs space, this place is as trendy as you might expect from a place on Marleybone High to be. The food stays pretty down to Earth, though - I had their version of Eggs Benedict - smoked salmon, poached eggs, spinach, and hollandaise, on their walnut toast. The entirety of the dish seemed to depend on the hollandaise - to cover up the slightly dry salmon, and to provide some brightness to the rest of the dish, which was very much lacking in salt. It was all pretty well cooked, so I considered the dish an overall success, though not to the level you might expect from a restaurant which is offering copies of the owner's cookbook for sale.
A bite of the French toast didn't reveal many new revelations, either, though I admittedly didn't get any of the banana stuffing, nor the bacon which adorned the top of it. Seemed like a popular dish, though, by my observations.
Ultimately, the meal ended up being technically proficient, but not worth the trouble of getting packed like sardines into the tiny restaurant and have to fight for the attention of the few waiters running around.

I was a bit disappointed with the food, the menu was very hit or miss. Some items were great...the seared scallops and the risotto for instance, others were simply bland and/or not well executed---braised lamb and chocolate brownie (yes you can screw up a brownie apparently) I am looking at you. Given the huge crowd (it was late and it was midweek), I assume the issue was we chose our tapas poorly. Next time will have to try some of the others items on the menu...
I love this sunny little cafe on the ground floor. I frequently go to meet people for coffee (the flat white is quite good, as is the latte served traditionally in a glass, rather than latte mug) on weekdays, and once in awhile for breakfast on the weekends. Love the Turkish-style eggs with toast (a soft boiled eggs cradled in Greek-style yogurt topped with chilli oil).... so good!
Tip: Go at 10am on the weekends, because this place gets stupid busy. There is a queue even before they open, and it continues for hours on end. I realize there is a dearth of brunch places in Marylebone, but c'mon... this is just insane!

1-long waiting queues!!!
2- uncomfortable stool seats- which I usually get allocated to!!
3- rude service in particular a male waiter who treats me badly every time I am there
4- they don't have sugar other than brown!!!
5- you have to beg for salt!
6- between brunch and lunch you can't get a food menu just to look at !!

I may be slightly biased as I am a New Zealander and have been pining for a decent brunch for the five years I have lived in London. Well I FINALLY found it. This place realises that you don't have to have eggs for it to be brunch. Unique and delicious combinations of food (like sweetcorn and blueberry fritters, or pecan & banana french toast with bacon mmmm). Be prepared to queue but it is well worth the wait!
I've been to The Providores many times - for brunch and dinner - and it is one of my favorite places in London.
Brunch: The Turkish eggs are to die for - and a unique way to do brunch. The chorizo is also always good. If you prefer sweet, then definitely do the French toast or crepes (depending on the time of year).
Dinner: Go for risotto or lamb. The seafood is ok, but I'd skip it in favor of heartier options. Dinner is less tapas style than brunch, so you can expect full plates. I haven't had dessert there but it always looks really yummy!
Atmosphere: The place is small and they pack you in pretty tight. On the bottom floor, you can be seated at the main table (high stools) with others right beside you). You can also be seated in the window, which is kind of nice (and can be done alone with a newspaper!). For upstairs, you can make reservations for larger parties, which is nice for birthday parties / events. I took my parents here when they were visiting and it was great to be upstairs because it isn't as loud and crowded.
Lastly, get the latte/cappuccino no matter what meal you come for. The coffee is excellent and made with care!
Brunch! That elusive and sometimes forbidden word outside of north america finally makes a proper appearance. We went to the tapa room, which at 8 minutes past opening had already filled up on a saturday. Food was amazing, from waffles to poached eggs. Bloody marys were amazing (bellini i was told was just ok).
Get here early on the weekend. No really, get here early. Only complaint is that it can end up being a bit pricey, but you are having brunch in Marlyebone so I guess you can see it coming.
I love having brunch and I love breakfasts, warm crispy toast ready to be slapped with butter and condiment, silky and fluffy scrambled eggs... Need I go on? I can have breakfast stuff anytime of the day and love it when places offer all day breakfasts. As not everyone might be as crazy as I am, brunch is a good alternative where I can still go breakfast crazy while my friends can choose other options; all while chilling out on a sunny and relaxing weekend day.
A place which left me with good memories was Providores and Tapas.

My girlfriends and I enjoyed our selections, the ingredients are well harmonised and taste-wise was spot on.
For the Tapa Room Brunch:
Summary: Good, but not great. A little over-hyped. Better than its sister restaurant, Kopapa, both in terms of quality and quantity.
The brunch menu sounds fantastic, and the execution was good. I especially enjoyed my banana smoothie.
I really like that they play with unconventional flavours in their dishes. With that said, Providores falls into the same trap as its little sister: it plays around with TOO many flavours at once. I had the Grilled chorizo with sweet potato and miso hash, a soft boiled egg, garlic labne and star anise cashew nut praline. The first bite was really good because I could taste that lovely combination of the chorizo, sweet potato, egg, and praline. After that first second, the garlic labne took over, and just masked the other flavours. I couldn't taste the miso at all. The palate can only send so many signals to the brain, and mixing too many flavours together can end up ruining or covering all the flavours. If they had just taken out two or even one flavour, I think the dish would have been great.
I'm not sure I'll be coming back to be honest - maybe if it were in my neighborhood, but I would even say that there are places closer to me that are better value for price.

This is a breakfast place with a difference. If you're after a lazy sunday feel this is the perfect place to go. The ambience is reminiscent of a Spanish Tapas house in Madrid (aptly named) and the room seats around 10 sit down tables for 2, and the rest shared on high-tables.
The menu is delicious. There are some pretty interesting choices available too - like the brown rice porridge, granola and the turkish eggs. This doesn't stop at the food - there are a range of absolutely delicious fruit juices available.
This is also a nice after-dinner place with some very cool cakes and tea - including a mulberry tea which is particularly unique.
Always busy, this is one of the best places to be on Marylebone High Street!
Still not quite sure what to make of this place, even after having been there twice. Haven't yet tried the Tapa Room for anything besides brunch though, and its menu sounds really original and appetising.
What I have tried: brunch in the Tapa Room. I really didn't like what I had. It was a savoury waffle with some kind of sauce which I can't quite remember except that it was just all a bit wrong and the wrongness was exacerbated by the involvement of sweetcorn. Oof. Did not like. The chorizo a couple of my friends had was good, although I don't know what you could do to fried chorizo to make it taste bad. I thought the service was excellent though, especially considering it was very busy. One tip for the Tapa Room is to avoid sitting close to the door if it's chilly outside because it's very draughty.
Service was also absolutely impeccable upstairs in the Providores restaurant, which is a beautiful room that manages to be calm without being too dead. We went for their 3 course Sunday dinner which I think is about £24 without wine - although to get a glass of wine is just a few quid extra which is pretty good value.
Despite having recently sworn never to do so again, I ordered risotto because it involved wasabi, and it really did taste flavourful and interesting. My main of sea bass was cooked well although had a slightly odd (chemical?) taste at points. It came in a butterbean broth, which I didn't really get - isn't that just white liquid? Weird. Everyone else had the lamb which was great. My favourite course was dessert - I had a chocolate brownie which was just so unbelievably good, one of the best I have ever had, perfectly paired with golden crunch ice cream (slightly more of that would have been nice, it was such a good complement).
I will try to go back and try that all day Tapa Room menu, but I shall never darken the door of brunch again. For now, it's getting 3 stars, I debated 2 stars considering the food-quality ratio but in the end the great service weighed in its favour.

The communal dining wasn't particularly comfortable and the service was a bit crap, though.
I quickly learned the difference between eating downstairs and upstairs: downstairs, no reservations are taken, whereas to eat upstairs in the restaurant you can reserve along with paying a £1.50 cover charge -- no biggy, but we were informed that the ambience is more chill downstairs as well as the food is slightly better. I couldn't compare, but I'm glad I went downstairs.
There is communal seating in the sense that there are two large tables in the middle with stool seating, and then on the edges of the room, various tables and chairs, along with window seating at the front.
I had a mixed berries and banana smoothie to start with, which was very fresh and tasty. Our friend had had mostly everything on the menu but said that the turkish eggs 'changa' was mind-blowing, so what more do I have to say -- I went Turkish, and I'm so glad. Besides the excess amount of melted chili butter, the plate was divine. Two poached eggs with whipped yoghurt and some melted chili butter -- yes please -- to go on top of your choice of sourdough or seeded granary bread. Fantastic.
Although we waited in line at 11.30am for about 30-45 minutes for 4 people, we were served in a timely fashion and were surprised at the continuing line when we were leaving around 1.30pm.
Loved the place, loved the food, and loved the location.
Make sure you read their website as they do not take reservations for the Tapas room. We came around 630pm on a Friday night and were fortunate to get a table before it got crowded. Although I liked the food, I felt like each item had a lot going on and possibly too much. I was disappointed with the pork belly as the meat could have been more tender and the skin was more tough than crispy.

I have been to both the Tapa Room (downstairs for drinks/tapas) and Providores (the restaurant proper).
My favourite of the two is the Tapa Room which is pretty informal with a mixture of communal tables and small bistro style tables. There are no reservations here which means that there can be a bit of a wait at the weekend as it is popular (especially for brunch). However, for me, I like the all day menu more than the brunch menu. This offers lots of fusion style food in small Tapas plates - the menu changes pretty regularly but there is always a good mix of meat, fish and vegetables to choose from. I always like to choose the combination that sounds the most wierd/crazy and I have never been disappointed with results (so far at least).
Upstairs, the Providores restaurant is more formal (white table cloths and polished service) but still carries a relaxed vibe. The fusion theme is continued from downstairs but, for me, is not as successful. Perhaps it is the more formal environment but it doesn't seem quite as fun trying out all the crazy combinations upstairs as downstairs
In both places there are an excellent selection of NZ wines (by the glass, carafe and bottle) with a different wine maker featured on the list each month. This must be the best section of NZ wines in the UK and is a great place to explore and try new things. The upstairs restaurant also hosts regular wine maker dinners if that is for you!
What an amazing brunch venue!! I seriously can't brag about this place enough, I had the hibiscus martini, which was to die for, and an amazing dish with chorizo, poached egg, sweet potato mash and praline creme-- Seriously, it was the best meal I've had in a looooong time. I loved it so much, i tried to re-create it (with so-so results).
The Venue itself was very simple yet quite elegant. The staff was attentive (they did forget my drink once but apologized profusely and brought me one stat) and we didn't feel rushed at all. I would recommend this as a taste of what London actually is--a lazy Sunday of fine dining and sippling excellent cocktails.
I ate upstairs - the more formal restaurant rather than the tapas bar downstairs....so here goes.....White plate food at it's best. I really didn't take to this place but the group I was with loved it. Maybe I have a chip on my shoulder....it certainly wasn't on my plate. See now I like to see less of the plate and more of the food when the plate first arrives.
Maybe I ordered poorly. I confess I did not pay for this meal but I understand that whoever did probably took out a second mortgage. Okay I am prone to exageration. Everyone else I was with loved it. So I have given this an overall positve review. Honest.
My friend and I went to the Tapas room downstairs instead of the Providores restaurant. The service was quick and the food delicious. We had the deep fried squid, grilled sardines, and char siu duck bun. Both of us ordered a passion fruit cocktail which turned out to be light and fruity with a perfect amount of vodka for an early dinner.
The ambiance is great in the Tapas room. If you manage to get one of the three outdoors table, you'll get to enjoy the people watching on Marylebone High Street also.
Smooth little eaterie below the main restaurantdifficult to be specific. but it's good for breakfast,coffee,lunch ,tasty takes on classic foods.
A few small tables and some communal ones. Clearly very popular with the local Marylebone residents I like it!
This is such a find. Amazing for brunch, lunch and dinner! Had brunch here on Sunday and what a lovely experience. The menu offers the more usual brunch/breakfast-type things like a superb full english or veggie english, but the menu is so varied and interesting I had to opt for something a bit different. I went for the hot smoked salmon on walnut toast, with spinach, 2 (perfect) soft-boiled eggs and finished off with hollandaise - top notch. Great smoothies too.
It gets very busy at peak times, e.g brunch and dinner, and you can't book downstairs so it's pretty crowded, quite loud, and rather hot - which is why it only gets 4 stars and not 5. But, you can book upstairs, the more formal dining area if you call in good time. Definitely worth a visit and I'll be going back for more
Ah, breakfast culture. When did we Brits lose it?
You go anywhere else in the world and breakfast, or at least that pre-work cup of coffee at the bar, is an essential part of life. Paris, New York, Berlin, Eastern Europe, Spain, Australia, New Zealand they all understand the role that cafe culture has to play. London / the Uk though? We've struggled. Sure, you've always been sorted if you fancy a greasy spoon fry-up or a sausage-sandwich-of-indeterminable-origin but quality breakfasts? You've had to look long and hard for those.
Things are improving though. Over the last few years, the joys of the weekend brunch are easier to find and many places provide decent weekday offerings too. Typically, the best in London are of Antipodean origin: Lantana, and The Providores.
Of the two, I'd tip Providores slightly higher. The wine list - not that you want one with brekkie, of course - is excellent, the setting is simple and funky and buzzing, and the food - particularly the Turkish Eggs (natural yoghurt, chilli butter, poached eggs) and toasted sourdough - is first rate and creative. Lunch and dinner is also a good value, great tasting bet.
You'll know when London is the best city in the world because there will be a Providores-style cafe in every Borough. Until then, it's worth the trawl to Marylebone.
Excellent lunch! I stopped in on my friend's recommendation for a snack in the late afternoon (it's his go-to for lunch), and ate downstairs at one of the large communal tables. First of all, my virgin bloody mary was PERFECT. It tasted so good and was super spicy. My pepper fritters with sunchoke and coconut laksa with tea noodles were also very good, and both were beautifully presented. These were thoughtfully prepared with many components that contributed to a more complex flavor and texture profile, so this is not your standard fare! I also love the atmosphere too. I would definitely come back.
