It's a little off the beaten track but The Marlborough is well worth the 5-10 minute walk from the busy section of Camberwell Church Street. It's a moderately sized pretty traditional looking pub, it's nothing you haven't seen before and it's not somewhere you'd come across by accident (unless you often wander aimlessly around the back streets of the Camberwell/Peckham border) but there's one thing that sets the place apart from others like it: attitude.
There are a few staff members and some interested outside parties who are making it their mission to drive new people to the Marlborough, and they're doing a fine job. Full use is being made of the small stage area round to the left hand side of the pub with a wide variety of music nights happening regularly, and customers are encouraged to sample freshly made pizzas (yes, made on the premises!). Last time I played there one of the staff shared a cheeseless pizza with me, which was very welcome as I waited for my set time to come around.
As a venue to perform at it has great potential, with space for solo performers and bands alike. The usual problem of trying to fill it up with people who want to see new music exists, but that's the same as anywhere else and the enthusiasm and commitment The Marlborough are showing on the promotion side is a breath of fresh air. With time there's no reason why this pub venue couldn't have a very healthy regular clientele for the music nights, and I for one would be happy to leep going back there to perform and see new bands.
This live music venue has a great atmosphere and i'm hoping to get one of my bands to play there.
I had a great time there with my friends and you should ckeck it out every now and then to see what's happening there or who's playing live there.
