7 reviews for The East Hill
All Reviews
I love this pub, it's a pub without looking like a grubby rundown place, nor smells like stale beer 3 times over. This pub is filled with comfy couches, chairs and tables, really feels like I'm more in someone's home then a pub so to me, that's a nice touch.
We had food here too and we both loved what we got, the fish and chips were great (especially loved the chips which were on the extra crispy side), love a proper beer batter. And the shephard's pie was a hearty fare that my partner quite enjoyed. They have quite an extensive wine list along with the usual beers on tap and bottle (and alcohol).
For sure this is my go-to spot whenever I'm in Wandsworth. FYI, on the weekend if you want a table for dinner, call to make a reservation. They accept them and although sometimes there may be room anyway, sometimes there isn't, it's a popular spot!
If I had to choose between Wandsworth's most popular pub - the Alma - and the East Hill, I'd choose the East Hill any day. The cost of drinks and food at the East Hill is comparable to that at the Alma, but its uphill walk away from Wandsworth Town train station means that most people either a) don't know about it or b) are too lazy to walk to it. This means that the atmosphere is waaaaay more low key. Some people like hustle, bustle, seeing and being seen. Me? Not so much. That's why I like the East Hill. I'm guaranteed to snag a table. And everything feels a bit classier and less of a collective of rugged wooden tables, mismatched chairs, and alcohol-fuelled sexual desperation. Despite how this may sound, The East Hill isn't some old geezer's pub, and it still has a cozy and homey air to it. Plus, it benefits from a particularly wide drinks selection.
I probably wouldn't return specifically for its food, though. The food had a posh price tag without a posh chef. It was by no means bad; it just wasn't oh-my-god-amazing. It was more like hm-this-is-a-bit-of-a-letdown-for-£10.
Trudge up the hill from Wandsworth Town train station and you'll find a beautiful pub that tries a little bit harder.
What are they doing right?
1. The prices! Drinks are all about £2 less than at The Alma at the bottom of the hill. (Convenience charge).
2. The atmosphere! It is pleasant and comfortable. The dining area is well-separated from the bar area without feeling too isolated.
3. The food! Apparently they have a new chef, and dinner was great. I had two starters for my main: a goats cheese and beetroot salad, and a smoked salmon and capers salad. They were both lightly dressed and exactly what I wanted.
4. The wine! Their short and sweet wine list is quality. Malbec from Mendoza? Sold.
And only two train stops away from Barnes. Perfect!
it's a secret! this pub is RIGHT around the corner from the Alma, which is nice, but not worth the price.
I met here with a friend that works in the area, and he told me that his office likes to go their for drinks, but that it's never crowded.
The service was the exact pace you would expect from a chilled out empty pub, but it was worth it. If the weather is nice, they have outdoor seating, and the guests make for good people watching (an old man+ a dog+ drinking ale from a cask+ eating a porkpie= I love him)
I was being healthy and got a salad, and it wasn't bad for a pub salad! and it was reasonably priced.
I give them EXTRA points for having board games. Connect 4 is a winner in itself.
Suzanne H is right. The East Hill is just around the corner from the Alma Tavern (the clue to that is in the address, I suppose) and is far far better.
Molly and Suzanne have covered all bases with their reviews. They told you about the atmos and the chilled out nature, the better prices than in the aforementioned Alma and the good food.
So there's not a lot else for me to say. Thanks, girls.
Just don't all go here at once, or it will lose its charm of leaving you feeling rather naughty that you're in an all-round better and cheaper place than the Alma but that no-one else has discovered that yet.
I used to live around 4 doors away from this great little pub and whenever my parents visited I'd always take them here.
Firstly because the place is nice and clean and the staff are always polite. Secondly because it looks good and thirdly because they have a great food menu which even my fussy mother enjoys; I agree with Claire above that their fish & chips are great and well worth trying.
It's all just a bit above you normal pub in terms of quality and as such it attracts a really nice crowd. It's also good for small groups and is certainly one of the better pubs in the area and one worth checking out if you're in the vicinity.
This is an absolutely gorgeous pub on Alma road that serve all sorts of beers and spirits and excellent, top notch food as well.
I love the surroundings, plush wooden furniture in a rustic London pub. I had a good old fashioned fish and chips here and it was really delicious. The batter was cooked superbly and the chips were nice and chunky.
I wouldn't go out my way to visit this place but if you're a local this is the only stop you should make.
