I havent visited this pub in over 30 years, but my dad (Pat) used to drink there many a night. It was a working mans pub with many interesting characters. Funnily enough, visited predominately by males, filled with smoke and the distinct smell of booze (as it was in those days!) it was a friendly, warm place where one could have a good laugh, a good drink and a fantastic game of darts.
Dennis, an irishman, was the landlord then.
How things seem to have changed - i cannot tell you what it is like now but have great memories of it in my younger days.
The front of this place is a pub located on a quiet residential street in Notting Hill. The back is a restaurant. The decor is ordinary, but surprisingly the food was Asian and quite tasty. We enjoyed the soft shell crab and rock shrimp tempuras, the duck and watermelon salad, and the cod main course. The desserts were good too--a nice chocolate fondant with tasty ice cream and an almond creme brulee.
Service was good. A bit of a missing atmosphere and a lot of things on the menu were not available, but all and all a tasty meal in a relaxed atmosphere.
I've been here twice. The first time was two years ago for a Christmas party. There were 10 of us, and we had a big table out the back in the restaurant area. I remember that we all had a fabulous time. The starter and main course was delicious, but the dessert was a little disappointing (a shame as I look forward to indulging my 'sweet tooth').
The staff were excellent and managed to impressively remain calm when a one of the boys got soo drunk that he kept touching the bottoms of the male staff (he's surprisingly straight).
I recently went back a couple of months ago to catch up with an old friend, and it was a Friday night so busy, because of the fact that their bar area is quite small we couldn't get a seat, which was a bit of a pain considering we were in our heels!
Overall all though, great little pub in a convenient location, a couple of minutes walk from Notting Hill Gate.
A really famous pub many a scene from ealing stdios have been filmed here, great food and staff friendly.
This place is closed. It's now Colchi's Georgian Restaurant. which is pretty good too!
