Based on a roundabout on the A614 near Ollerton in Nottinghamshire, near to a McDonalds and a petrol station, and on the site of a former Little Chef, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the Big Fish is another chain restaurant. Inside, with its colourful laminated menus, the illusion continues. It is, however, a one-off - which is a shame, because the quality and service puts many similar restaurants to shame.
Fish and chips are of course the order of the day, and there's plenty of choice - cod, haddock, plaice, fishcakes and fish pie. I particularly like the grilled salmon, with comes with a salad, so I feel a little more virtuous than my dining companions. They also do a smaller fish and chips meal aimed at pensioners. There are other things on offer too if you're not a fan of fish, such as lasagne or chicken - plus a cooked breakfast if you get there early enough.
They offer a range of hot and soft drinks, including several different types of coffee made with Lavazza coffee. One gripe is that the tea comes with pots of UHT milk - fresh milk would be so much better and more authentic!
The food is always freshly cooked and delicious every time we go. The serving staff are polite, efficient and friendly, and the food is always served quickly. It's great value too, and there's also a takeaway on the premises which is even cheaper than eating in.
We use this restaurant on a fairly regular basis when we visit Sherwood Forest. The food is always excellent, well the fish dishes are, as we never have anything else on the fairly extensive menu. Coffee and sweets are a bit expensive, but are again, excellent. Our only complaint is that, at times there is a bit of a wait before your order is taken. Our last visit on 31st December 2008 resulted in a nearly half hour wait before a waitress turned up to take our order, and that was after complaining to one of the staff. It was fairly busy, but still a few people walked out before they received attention.
Having said that, the reason we waited was because the quality of the food makes it worth the wait.
Sorry to say I have to disagree with these reviews - I visited this restaurant this weekend and was disappointed with the food. Neither the take away nor the restaurant were busy when we got there but, after placing our order we still had a long wait for our food. When the food was delivered, the fish, the sausages and the pie were all hot but the chips in all cases were luke warm at best. Didn't complain but ate the food (we were hungry and on a fairly tight timescale) - perhaps should have done. When paying, the waitress asked if everything was OK so I said that the chips were cold. She did say sorry but that there was nothing she could do.
