5 reviews for Tate Modern Bar and Restaurant

On my first day in London, I had no idea where I was or where I was going! I was starving and didn't have any cash on me, so I stopped by the first place that would take my card, which just so happened to be the restaurant at the Tate.
I had my first taste of fish and chips here, and I have to say, it was delightful. Not at all greasy, good amount of food, side of mashed peas. That, a glass of wine, and the lovely view provided me a nice, relaxing lunch while I sorted myself out for a day of tourist-y activities.
Before I came here I thought fish and chips had to be wrapped in newspaper, soaked in vinegar, and off a truck or food stand to be good. No more! On Toni M.'s recommendation I came to the restaurant on top of the Tate Modern and had *the* most delicious fish and chips. Light, somehow greaseless fish with perfect fries, a vine tomato salad and a glass of dry white wine.
And the very best view of London there is.
Ahhhhh.
(Thanks, Toni M!)
I would recommend the Tate Modern Restaurant to anyone on the strength of its view alone. Almost every time I visit the gallery I'll make the trip up to the seventh floor just so that I can sit by the window with a glass of wine and admire the London landscape.
The space is divided into two with a bar area at one side and a restaurant at the other. The menu follows a sort of posh British-meets-European theme and while it is all very nice, stray too far from the 'light lunches' and it can get a bit pricey. My boyfriend ordered what was effectively a fry-up but with panncetta and duck eggs to make it a bit more special. He really enjoyed it although it was about three times what he would have paid in the local greasy spoon. Also, during peak times tables are more than likely to be booked up and the wait can last up to an hour. Therefore, my advice is to bypass the food part of it all together and go straight to the bar. Tea, coffee, wine and beer are priced no more expensively than you would find them anywhere else along Bankside and you get to take in the view without it costing an arm and a leg. All of the fun but none of the cost. Perfect!"

That is a romantic story...I was invited for a first date to the Louise Bourgeois exhibition. Tate Modern has open on Friday and Saturday till late. This area is pretty much dead in the evening, and you do not have much choices to go afterwards except a pub.
But it seamed he had it all planned out. He took me to the 7th floor of Tate Modern and through the big glass windows we had a direct view onto the Themes and St. Pauls - he certainly managed to impress me!
We got a table for 2 at the restaurant. The food is of high-class rating. A very refined menu card offers scallops, haddock and tartar. The service was very attentive but left us our privacy.
The restaurant, with its large glass windows to the floor, is especially in the night a treasury, on both sides of the old power station, reconstructed by Herzog and De Meuron, the city was a glow.
On one side of the restaurant there is a long canvas reaching out from one side of the room to the other - I kept on looking at this art piece.
The bill was a bit of a wake up call - as we paid £40 each - very expensive; the bottle of wine was a good junk of it! But it was worth it - for this special occasion - I hope he thought that as well.
The next thing I remember walking over the small millennium bridge towards St. Pauls. That was the start of a longer story...
Despite thinking that museum dining can be iffy at best, my wife and I decided to have lunch and enjoy the view. I am glad we did. We waited for maybe 20 minutes or so for our table. We had a couple of glasses of good Chardonnay and enjoyed a great lunch. I had a pot a feu and she had a pasta dish. i ordered a side of Chips and they were AWESOME. How do they stay so hot for so long? Crispy too. Good Service and an energetic room. Check out the art and then head up for the food. Do it!
