FINALLY! Amazing (not just "decent", but... AMAZING) sushi in London. Went for the £30 omakase mix of sushi/sashimi.
A sushi-expert friend of mine taught me the tamago (egg) and rice are the true signs of a good sushi chef. The rice was really tasty; must be bc they import water from Japan to make their rice and the tamago was the perfect texture and sweetness.
All of the fish was exceptional quality esp the amaebi (sweet shrimp) wrapped in hotate (japanese sea scallop) topped with black tobiko. The small ama-ebi was a good sign as those tend to be sweeter. Also, their toro was sinfully amazing (just flew in from Japan) and maguro which is normally not a favorite of mine was really nice (and shockingly, not stringy vs. every other maguro I've had here.)
Lastly, the homemade chestnut ice cream with bits of chestnut was sooo YUMMMM. and I love the host/owner. she is so sweet.
This was a really nice surprise. Quality fish, well prepared, and reasonably priced. The rice is very nicely textured and flavored, and properly formed for the fish, which is skillfully selected and cut. We also had the house sake, which was a perfect compliment to our fish and, again, nicely priced. The actual space is representative of a small business...nothing fancy, but still pleasant. The couple who owns the restaurant is welcoming and it is overall a very enjoyable eating experience. I will return!
A lone Japanese restaurant in the sea of Indian restaurants on Drummond Street, Sushi of Shiori is a true joy to behold. The tiny shopfront could easily be passed by unnoticed, however any serious sushi lover would be foolish to do so.
On closer inspection, this little place that seats no more than 10 guests at a time, pays attention to all the right details. From the lovely pots in which the delicious green tea is served in to the beautiful Japanese plates and decorated glass place mats, Shiori knows what counts.
The sushi is crafted before you and the fresh tastes never disappoint. The menu is simple and there are a number of tasters to choose from including sashimi lunch set and nigiri mix. The Oshi-zushi was one of my favorites. The miso soup is fantastic (I know where I will be going when the winter colds hit in the months to come).
The service was impeccable, with the waitress being very attentive, but simultaneously discreet for such a small location. A lovely touch at the end was the bookmarks which she gave us advertising the restaurant, as Shiori in Japanese means bookmark. I will certainly be going back again and again.
