The only downside to Streetcar is that it works so well I can't justify buying a car!
I've been a member for a long time now and have simply never ever had a bad experience. They added vans last year, some MVPs this year (which I haven't tried yet) and I'm very much looking forward to the BMW 1 & 3-series that they are promising to rollout in 2010.

ok so ive now been a member for over a year and finally found the need to use their service. I used a Streetvan to help a friend move house the vans are charged £8.95 per hour. The vans are pretty good, VW transporters with A/C. It was so cool just walking up to it, placing my membership card on the windscreen and watching the lights flash and van unlock!
You can book any time on the phone too, an iphone app or a mobile website would be highly welcome.
The only downside to the service is that you have to return it to the spot you got it from, or pay £25 for privilege for finishing your hire in another location. for that reason its not getting five stars, id use it a lot more if i could do that as part of the standard service.
Looking forward to using the Golfs.
Are you an eco-conscious urbanite who eschews leaving excessive carbon footprints? Or maybe you're just a city-dwelling cheapskate who can't afford a car? Streetcar is for you.
Imagine you're moving flat or you need to get a flat-pack from Ikea home or you just need a vehicle so you can travel outside of the city for whatever reason. What's a vehicle-less Londoner to do?
For a £59.50 per year membership fee, you have complete access to Streetcar's fleet throughout London and can then hire a VW Polo (£3.95/hour), a VW Golf (£5.95/hour), a VW Touran (£6.95/hour) or a VW Transporter (£8.95/hour) from virtually anywhere. Streetcar also has daily, weekday, weekend, weekly and monthly rates.
What happens is this: you join Streetcar; they send you a 'Streetcard'; you book a vehicle online; you walk to the location where the vehicle is parked; you unlock the vehicle by flashing your Streetcard over the reader (like an Oyster); you drive away; you bring the vehicle back. It's as simple as that.
So far, I've used a Street Van twice, and the process couldn't have been more simple. No problems with the vehicle and no problems with billing. And when I've been out and about driving the vehicle and found I needed more time, all I had to do was send a text to Streetcar, and they extended the booking!
Around September 9th, I'm going to need to get a vehicle to drive me outside of London and back to pick up some very precious cargo, and Streetcar is going to be my saving grace!
I have been a member of streetcar for over a year now and IT WORKS
Cost £50 a year membership and then under £4 an hour to hire (£49.50 per 24 hours) the smallest car so for short trips it is excellent.
There are bout 10 cars within a 15 minute walk of my house parked in various selected spaces.
I go online, choose the date time location and then pop down and get in with a swipe card. Done and dusted
Up sides is it is easy and local and available day or night - no having to get to the office at certain times and closed on a Sunday.
I can't recommend it highly enough - only downside is that I can't think of anything witty to write
