The Sofitel has quite possibly the best location at the intersection of Copacabana and Ipanema as well as the charm and history of an older property. The negatives are things that are not unique to this property, like the speed of service. This is simply part of the culture, so I can't fault the Sofitel staff too much. The rooms have various renovations and for the group I was with, we noticed a number of differences although none were horrible. The views from most balconies and the breakfast area were postcard perfect.
As with most tourist areas, expect prices at the hotel and on the beach street to be high. But walk a block or two away from the beach and you can find places that are safe and more reasonable.
The breakfast is very French and I highly recommend it - as for night caps, don't skip the capirinhas!
I fell this place has past its prime. The location is fine, view blocked by a construction for the world cup that will go away.
But there were problems for such a high cost hotel. The carpet and rooms were old. Things did not work. The drawers would not shut correctly, nor the door. I noticed the maid going around shutting other guest room doors that clearly the guest did not , close correctly. Gym is ok. The water temperature was very inconsistent, once set it would switch between cold and hot. Supplies were not always replace. WiFi worked then stopped; they gave me a special code to fix. Fixtures and paint were old and not well kept.
I can see renovations are going on and probably conferences are granted better rates and amenities than regular travelers. Also a big negative for Orbitz, most places when you book a hotel requiring a pre-pay or offering no cancel policy then that fact is made clear. It was on the reservation but not clear. Regardless of the lack of ability to cancel my other points about "past its prime" stand.
Again, for my stay it was well past its prime.
Went here for dinner and drinks. Probably best spot in Copacabana. Bar and restaurant are both beautiful with remarkable view on the beach and Sugar Loaf, especially after sunset. Cocktails and food were great, surprisingly wine list wasn't that impressive.
This hotels location is great...located by everything, in Copacabana, right on the beach. The food service is good but very slow...that I'd the culture to some extent so don't have too high of expectations. The rooms are acceptable for the area but I've stayed at nicer. The food is excellent...and the general employees are pleasant. I think it's worth a beach view.
