I went here for my birthday - the first time I had been.

It is a great space to dine in, with plenty of room around your table providing conversational privacy.

There is a private dining room downstairs.

The waiters and waitresses attentiveness varied from super-sharp to slack but they are superb, friendly and knowledgeable - so don't hold the slack against them!

As another reviewer said, this is European cuisine: We ate our way through three courses of excellent fayre, and had Sorbet and Champagne in between Starters and Mains.

    Wine, Austrian was superb!

If you want a special night out, the place is worth a visit.

Seven Dials is well known in the Brighton area as a high-class eating establishment and has an excellent reputation for its food. My partner and I went there for a special Anniversary treat (a treat, because it is expensive - but more of that later).

We started off by being given a small basket of bread with some mushroom pâté, which was delicious, and which I followed with wild mushroom soup, which was also very good. However, my main course of asparagus risotto was disappointing: the sauce was very heavily creamy (I suspect that had added cream) and the rice was underdone, so that it was slightly gritty, and therefore rather unpleasant. My partner's fish starter and lamb main were more successful - very good, but not outstanding. My feeling was that they didn't cater as seriously for vegetarians as for carnivores. On the plus side, the wine list is very extensive, although again at a price.

The most disappointing aspect of the evening, however, was the service. There was an event booked in the basement, which seemed to overwhelm the staff. We asked three times for some extra bread, which took 20 minutes to arrive, and 30 minutes to provide the water we ordered. (The wine came more quickly - a ploy to get you to drink more of that, I wonder?). The staff were perfectly pleasant, if slightly harassed, but just too hard to get hold of.

By the end of our main course, we had decided to give up on desserts and ask for the bill: you guessed it - we had to wait 15 minutes. Although we were expecting it to be expensive, £100 for two of us, for two courses, was still a bit steep, especially considering the service. Side orders like bread and vegetables are extra, (£3-£3.50 per veg) and 12% service charge is automatically added, which bumps up the bill. So even their lunch-time menu of £15 for two courses could easily end up costing £25. I would mind less but, for that money, I think that the service should be as good as the food - it's a total experience you are paying for, after all.

Since then, we've heard of mixed experiences from others - some very good indeed, others less so - although the food is always highly regarded. More consistency on the service front would encourage us to give it another try.

Classy joint offer high class meals and an air of poshness surrounds it!

Well known around Brighton, for me its only a 'special occassion' with family or a loved one.

I would have to agree with previous reviews that the service was a bit of a let down, probably wouldn't return again due to this.

If your after posh nosh fine wine this is your place!

As far as I know, there are not many so-called fine dining options in Brighton, but this is one of them. With friendly staff, and the choice of the terrace as well as indoors, this is an attractive restaurant, with a modern European menu. I recently enjoyed rump of Sussex lamb, with an accompanying shepherd's pie, french beans and pea puree. While the lamb was tender (and the pie had shredded rather than minced meat), it could have tasted lambier. To follow, the sticky toffee pudding was excellent. My partner's roast cod with garlic mash was a commendably large and well cooked tranche. There were no taste let-downs in the dessert department - her jelly was essence of strawberry. Bill for dinner for three with wine was an acceptable £78.

The reputation of Seven Dials restaurant is one the precedes it and perhaps also outreaches it. If you're not aware of this place's reputation you have to visit for yourself to make up your own mind. Serving a well-selected menu of British food, it's the kind of place that suits every occasion however it can be somewhat inconsistent. Being only a short walk from Brighton Station it's great for both locals and visitors and with such friendly service it's very welcoming. The only problem is the price. For the money you'd expect great quality every time but there's nothing incredibly special or exciting about the food. Seven Dials restaurant hasn't got its reputation for nothing, however, I feel it may be a tad lazy on the upkeep. Despite this it's certainly worth trying. Perhaps not when trying to impress someone though.

I've been to this restaurant twice; the first time was with a date where we ordered 3 courses and had a few drinks, the second was with a voucher for a set meal and a set price. Interestingly I had very different experieces. Where I walked away the first time feeling contented with good food and very friendly service and feeling like although it was a tad expensive it was definately somewhere I'd go back to, I walked away the second time vowing never to return having been made to feel like a second class citizen on producing my voucher. The meal was average at best, they were impatient with my daughter and rude with myself and my party. Having once thought of it as quite a classy place I have since changed my opinion to finding it a pretentious place having shown it's true colours.

One of my favourite restaurants in town. We have visited Seven Dials on numerous occasions and have always had a fantastic meal.
When reading a few other reviews on Seven Dials I was really shocked to find people had said the service was not great, as one of the reasons we love it is due to the fantastic service. The food more to the point has never let us down. All I can say is that I am very disappointed they can not fit us in for my birthday (unfortunately near Christmas) it will just teach me to book sooner next time.
