Thank you for being just around the corner from our house. Lovely food and service is wonderful.
Lesson learned - 4 star sushi in Catford is not 4 star sushi. I don't know why I was expecting something good in Catford of all places, but the preceding reviews were very positive. I guess if you live in Catford anything resembling sushi is great compared to the standard fried chicken fakes and fish and chips on every street.
But sorry Catford - this is bad sushi. And bad ramen too. And the whole place needs a bit of a clean. A bit of dirt on the floors, dust around the room and grubby waitress uniforms can be tolerated at a lot of places, but not somewhere serving raw food.
I come here for buffet sessions, my favourite dishes are prawn tempura rolls, salmon skin rolls, california rolls, fried tofu, salmon terriyaki! great section of japanese and chinese food for under £15.
Owner is very nice and chatty, appearance is good.
TOP QUALITY SUSHI!!!
Walked passed this place for years, thinking it wouldn't be good considerring the location and dated facade - but how wrong could I be. The food was as good as any good Japanese restaurant I've been to in the West-End, and the service was also very welcoming and relaxing.
Price was about right for the quality - not expensive though.
We also used this place for our child's birthday party (in the low-table area), and the staff went out of their way to make it a very wonderful experience for everyone (adults & toddlers).
This is a hidden gem - you wouldn't expect to find such a gorgeous sushi restaurant in Catford of all places. Best value is their buffet - served Sunday to Thursday nights - £11.90 for all you can eat - a great selection of freshly cooked Japanese and Chinese food including some sushi and peking duck. Affordable, wonderful, healthy and cheap - what more could you want?
Have to agree with all the reviewers of Sapporo Ichiban - this place is a real treat. Tucked away behind the Catford Theatre and Town Hall it serves up delicious Japanese food and a lovely freindly atmosphere. A real treat!
I was astonished the first time I actually ate in here. Tucked behind the back of catford town hall, you couldn't actually find a less salubrious place to eat sushi. Yet the food is fresh and well prepared, and the interior is quite nicely done - it feels like someone's front room in lots of ways, lots of little ornaments etc. The windows are not impressive (old dusty objects, dingy fish tank, not very aesthetically pleasing). But once you get past them you'll be impressed. Good Japanese beer selection and good prices. I suspect the town hall workers use this place a lot; it certainly deserves to be better known.
One of Catford's little gems. Sapporo is a Japanese restaurant with an open plan kitchen, available for the diners to watch the intricate preparations of the sushi roll or the grilling of the Teriyaki chicken.
The restaurant is reasonably priced, a main meal and sushi comes to on average ten to thirteen pounds. The food is fresh, tasty and well presented. Many Japanese people frequent the restaurant which is always good indication of it's authenticity. Sapporo is relaxed, hassle free place to dine, the atmosphere is chilled, the food never takes too long to reach the table, the staff are amiable and the service is great I'm yet to leave Sapporo without a complimentary drink.
Floor seating is situated at the rear of the restaurant where tables are mounted into a box which infiltrates the floor leaving room for your legs, instead of having to cross them like a school child. Small cushions are placed on the floor for you to put between your bottom and the floor. It's a different and fun way to eat and although I've been eating here for years I still request the floor seats sadly for me the thrill of sitting on these seats hasn't worn off!
Nevertheless these seats get snapped up pretty quickly, particularly over the weekend and I have always been shamefully disappointed when directed to a regular table. If you do wish to be seated at one of the floor seated tables then I definitely suggest booking a table and make sure you specify which one!
Great value for money sushi in a friendly setting - this is without doubt my favourite thing about Catford. Ignore the abundance of lucky cats waving at you from the window, stroll past the little koi pond in the entrance, and you have a seating area that combines both western-style (table and chairs) with Japanese style (tables with sunken seating areas). The decor inside is simple, with a large vintage kimono hanging on the back wall. It can get very busy at lunchtime and in the evenings, but I have always got a seat, and have whiled away many happy hours over warm sake and sushi "pizza" (this is not a pizza, it is a rice and sashimi dish that is highly addictive!).
I've worked near here for years and it took way too long to discover this excellent establishment. The staff are friendly and considerate, the menu is wide ranging and well considered and the food is beautiful and always very reasonably priced. You will find it is never as full as the food suggests it should be , and the fast efficient service means that you never have to wait too long.. There is a shortage of great restaurants in Catford, so don't pass this one by, it may look like utterly miss able from the outside, maybe even a bit 'avoidable' but it a little jewel and you will visit it often.
Very decent sushi and other Japanese food. Nice people running it and reasonable prices. If you think you're going to do better than this in Catford then good luck to you...
