The place to see Margaret's Tree from 'Sense and Sensibility' and to wander as if in another-entirely historic- world.
Early Spring is the best place to see scatterings of exquisite tiny cyclamen along the central pathways and summer to pick up the scent of various beautiful shrubs.
There's an excellent art and craft gallery-the Chapel Gallery-in the centre and a beautiful and peaceful Italian garden. But it costs-and if you haven't got National Trust membership that's a bit of an ouch. Worth it though!
Saltram house gardens are the gardens of this grand Georgian mansion. The house was used in the filming of Sense and Sensibility and the gardens border the Plym Estuary.
The walk round can take about 45 minutes depending on the route you take and you pass a mini beach, beautiful woodland, marsh and a folly. The route is very quite, you get a few cyclists but otherwise it is very peaceful. You can see all the cars pelting down embankment road but manage to feel calm and relaxed.
If you have never been it is definitly worth a visit. You can either drive here from Plymouth which is a 10 minute drive, or about a 45 minute walk from the centre.
Another very beautiful National trust house and garden. Easily accessible on the edge of Plymouth. Lots of things to discover in the gardens including the lovely little hideaway at the very end of the path, a great lime avenue and the orangery with real oranges. Lots of child-friendly events - halloween being a definite highlight. And the art gallery is also very good having a nice array of different exhibiting artists at affordable prices. Slightly spoiled by a lovely view from the house of the municipal tip but this is now full and in the process of being covered over so views should improve.
my partner and i visit here regulary. We take our two dogs, baby in the pram and two older children and everyone seems to enjoy it. We are able to let the dogs off safe in the knowledge that they cant run off. there is a small beach too great for skimming stones. The house is beautiful but not for small children and dogs. beautiful surroundings.
