We came here for a Sunday lunch and I would say that everything just about met our expectations. The food is more pricey than your average pub, but the food quality is definitely there as well. Service is also friendly although a bit slow as it got busy. As the price of our 2 course Sunday lunch was over £50 then I would have expected everything to be perfect. All on all I would give 3.5 4 stars, hence I give it the benefit of the doubt.
We managed to get a last minute (early) Saturday evening table for 5 in the bar side of the Royal Oak. In the evenings they serve the same a la carte menu as the main restaurant here.
The menu is good but not cheap, providing a decent mix of classical and local game. This is well complimented by an extensive wine list.
The service is always friendly and welcoming.
Dont go expecting your average country pub grub - Royal Oak is aiming at the market above this, and it juts about works
The Royal Oak is an historic building dating back to the mid 17th century and is situated right at the heart of the pretty Berkshire village of Yattendon. It is a welcoming place offering a choice of dining experiences. Relax in the bar with a pint of the excellent local beer and a handmade pie or choose one of the private or open dining rooms, where you can eat from the traditional and comtemporary menu. The game dishes, such as the basil stuffed breast of guinea fowl, are good and the food is always well presented. Prices are reasonable with a two course lunch from £13. The wine list is not extensive but is well-chosen. Located in the country the Royal Oak is used to children and dogs and welcomes both in the bar area. It also offer rooms seven ensuite rooms, should you wish to stay overnight.
