Pizza pizza pizza!
Or so they say..
Alas, I don't really like pizza so I tend to go here for that other rare treat in life, alcohol. Not the wine though, pretty dear.
It's on a good spot, with a relaxed laidback atmosphere for a late lunch/early dinner style affair.
Not much different from the other ones kicking around, with the Sauchiehall Street one being notable, but I tend to get a phone signal in here for some reason and I am all for that.
Another place that I vaguely recall being in when it may have been under different management.. There was a glorious summer or two back in the day when I had two valuable assets: time and money. I rarely have either of each thesedays. But alas I am sure I have been here before for excellent cocktails a few years ago..
Cut to the present day, a nice place that I recommend. If other peoples comments are anything to go by, then the pizza is recommended. All I can say, is it is fired out in a fairly rapid procession in here which can only be a good thing.
Stepping into Bier Halle, you may feel like you're in Eastern Europe, but alas, sadly you are still in Glasgow (I kid - it's actually, probably, better!)
Whether you're in for a quick bite, or just a pint, this place is awesome. The atmosphere is relaxed with a buzz of chatter, music and kitchen/bar noises. The dim lighting and stark furniture really bring home the cosy Eastern feel to the place. A huuuuuuge range of international beers are dedicated to the bar, or, if beer really isn't your thing, the food is something to behold. The pizzas are AMAZING - I love the parma ham pizza... soooo crispy, and tasty. Yum yum yum. They have other types of food, but with 2-4-1 on pizza, why not just stick it out?
The staff know their stuff (honestly, I expect half of them to have some Eastern European names, like 'Vladimir" - that's how authentic it feels. "Another beer please, Vlad." It just works!) about the beers and food, so you're not stuck "umm"ing and "ahh"ing over which to choose.
Worth a visit if you're nearby.
The Bier Halle is a gem of a pub, tucked away in a basement and serving a fantastic range of the finest beer from around the world. As Catriona mentioned, the pizzas are the other highlight - I recommend the marguez sausage for those who like it hot (you can specify the amount of chillies added) or the Stornaway black pudding & egg for those of you after a Scottish flavour to go with your chosen beer.
The Bier Halle is generally very busy of an evening, yet the roaming bar staff offer superb table service, meaning you'll never run empty for long, even when it's mobbed down there. As mentioned, the staff are knowledgable and they'll serve your beer with an appropriate glass that's suitably chilled.
One weirdness is the tables on the right as you head in the door - they're up high with stools on the left and raised seating along the right-hand wall. I can never quite get comfy perched by these tables with my legs dangling away and it feels a bit awkward. That might just be me, but I'd recommend grabbing a seat off to the left if you can.
The catch? Well, the price of the beer can be quite an eye opener, but weigh it up against the fantastic two-for-one pizza and it all evens out. There aren't many places in Glasgow where you could discover the range of beers on offer here, either. Highly recommended.
It really is impossible to talk about the Republic Bier Halle without mentioning their fantastic 2-4-1 pizzas. The pizzas are thin base and very tasty. My pick would be the goat's cheese and roasted vegetables -delicious. For a £10 you will be able to get a couple of pints and a great pizza. The non-pizza menu offers a range of tapas-esque food which is quite reasonably priced. £8 will get you a good lunch and £12 an evening meal.
It is a great place to go for a quick bite with your friend to catch up or if you and the other half can't be bothered cooking and want to save the pennies then Republic Bier Halle is ideal. The vibe is relaxed and welcoming and the dim lighting and ambient background music make it a very relaxing restaurant. Unlike the city centre branch this version has a dedicated dining space so if you want the full Bier Halle dining experience then check it out. Food is served Mon-Sat noon-10pm; Sun 12.30-10pm and the Bar open is Mon-Sun noon-midnight; Sun 12.30-midnight.
Overall it allows you to feel like you are sitting in an Eastern European basement-bar while sitting in the middle of the city.
