This is the central square in Dunkirk and from time to time, there are events (xmas market, big wheel, sledge run, carnival, farmyard ) but most of the time, it's just an empty square. On the floor, there are spotlights representing different towns in Europe so you can amuse yourself for 5 minutes walking your way around Europe. The statue in the middle represents Jean Bart, a pirate (or privateer, because he worked for the king) who is known as the son of Dunkirk and respected. Legend has it in WW2, that the Germans left the statue in place, even though they could have taken the metal for the war effort, because Jean Bart's sword is pointed at England !!
