I would say this was probably my favorite meal in Austria. The restaurant is in Salzburg, not too far from where they filmed Sound of Music. The restaurant itself has a very beer hall feel to it, very rustic and very comforting winter dishes. All the dishes aren't all that healthy but they were delicious.

      The food:

Classic Cream Goulash with sour cream and herb spaetzle. I loved this dish. It was so hearty and great for a cold winter day. The Goulash was nice and creamy and the beef chunks were fork tender. The spaetzle itself doesn't have a lot of taste but they pickup the sauce quite nicely. http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=BeAuIxvtD7S85BXOXqzeTg&userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA

Wiener Schnitzel with parsley potatoes and cranberries. It's a perfectly cooked veal cutlet with nice creamy potatoes and a nice tart acidic note from the cranberries. This dish seems pretty simple but the flavors were great. It's a super homey dish. http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=YTw2eoIYI3kAE_cwZaYmEQ&userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA

Very good food. Can't tell how authentic but saw multiple local family gatherings there so seems less touristy than most places. Nice outdoor seating. Waiters and waitresses wear traditional Bavarian style clothing. Large portions.

BBQ ribs were nothing short of amazing. Even green salad was good, came with tasty potatoes and shredded cabbage buried underneath the lettuce. Unpretentious good food at a reasonable price.

My wife & I had dinner at the Pittler Keller with two friends from Singapore on Thursday 11 May.

My wife ordered the pike, one of my friends and I ordered the half pork knuckle and the other friend ordered a salad. My wife enjoyed the pike and there were no complaints about the salad. However the half pork knuckles were disappointing. The pieces of skin were a bit too chewy and there was still some cartilage attached to my friend's portion. I thought the taste of the pork was a little off, either from over spicing or perhaps having been stored too long.

I think the PittlerKeller is a bit overrated due to its history.
I recommend the nearby Braurestaurant IMLAUERas an alternative Austrian dining experience.

We enjoyed dinner here last night as we were looking for a place near our hotel (Sheraton).

Even tho it is in the Crowne Plaza it didn't seem like just another hotel restaurant. The place was very busy with all of the remaining tables marked as reserved however we arrived early and tho we didn't have reservations they we able to seat us after a short wait. They say it is oldest beer cellar in Salzburg .

I had a salad with breaded chicken breast which was very good, husband had zweibelroastbraten, probably not spelled correctly, essentially sliced roast with brown onion gravy. We enjoyed our meal very much, service was excellent even though they were extremely busy.

      Prices were reasonable, everything was
      Good.

We ate here at and stayed in the hotel for the evening, because it was pouring down rain outside. The atmosphere was very nice, however we did not have a good experience in terms of the service and the food. First of all, the beer was great, but that excellence is credited to Stiegl and had nothing to do with PitterKeller, except their pouring it into a glass.

The restaurant lost our dinner order. None of us were feeling rushed for dinner and we were enjoying our beers. The waiter was asked to check on our order, when we saw two other parties with the same number of people get their dinner and were well into it. It seemed clear that our order was lost. We asked one final time for the waiter to check our order. After another 10 minutes, we finally received our food, much of it lukewarm. No apology from the waiter, but more of an attitude from him.

If you make a mistake, you own it and apologize. Especially in customer service like this. There are plenty of great places to get excellent Austrian food, and many other cuisines within walking distance from this hotel. We may have hit the PitterKeller when they were having a bad night, but the service and cold food were what they were. Skip this place, get out of the hotel, and get some good local food.

Great quality all around. Maybe I'm just jaded by higher prices in the US, or a novice to the regional cuisine (true), but the quality of the dishes exceeded any other deutsche food I've had in the US or Europe. The bread and spread appetizer itself would have been 3x the price in Dallas, much less a more expensive city. Great sauerkraut and riesenbrat too.
