i'm from nyc. so first place i went to visit is camden, my mate said it's my kind of place to look around and do some shopping. i was hungry and i was expecting of a fish and chips place in london where u just grab and go as what the english says "take away" . tell me how this nice resturant in on the corner of ghetto ass flea market shops. i heard a asian man spoke well with english accent, telling my mate and i how pier 1 has the best codfish in town. good one. yeah we were convinced
The seatings were nice and clean. the waitress was nice, she didnt speak english well. so we just pointed at the menus, my mate wanted something small and appetizing by accident he ordered off a kid's menu, which he wasnt allowed to order. he's english and he doesnt like fish. i know it's like chinese person saying he/she doesnt like rice. so, the bill came out to be about 20 pounds. i'll take my fellow americans here to eat.
thanks pier 1 x
The blokes behind the counter here were none too pleased to see us turn up after 10:00 (they close at 11:00, I believe) but still, they let us sit upstairs and were quick to take our orders and then hovered round while we ate to make sure we finished so they could close up.
I get it, at the end of the night everyone wants to go home.
In sum:
Mushy peas too minty
Chips not great
Haddock had too many bones
This chippy opened in the last month or so. It replaced Bodega De Tapas, which closed down another month or so back.
I was really hoping that this would be a great chippy right in my back yard, and given the prices I had high expectation. Unfortunately it's not good at all.
£10 for a mediocre piece of cod, flavourless dry chips, and a tiny scoop of mushy peas? No thank you, I guess I'll continue trudging to Rock & Sole Plaice in Covent Garden when I'm looking for a good fish & chips experience.
A fancy fish and chip shop in Camden, well who would guess. Pier 1 is indeed, nicely designed. With its big glass frontage and clean, bright, wood finish upstairs, the place scores big for aesthetics.
The main dish is fish and chips, with an option on what kind of fish you want. There were the usual suspects such as cod, haddock, plaice and many more. At first glance the menu seems awfully expensive. The second glance isn't much better. You can pay anything from £9.95 up towards £15 for your fish supper, resplendent with two small petri dishes of tartare sauce and mushy peas. I went for the plaice and seeing as everything is cooked fresh to order, I settled in for a long wait. It only took about 10mins before a huge plate of fish and chips was before me. It wasn't bad, I'd actually say it was quite good. The true acid test as Miguel in the previous review touched on is, are they as good as Rock and Sole Plaice in Covent Garden?(regarded as one of the best chippies in London) Simple answer is no! Yes I'll admit Pier 1 have created a more restaurant'esque menu, including starters and desserts, but at the end of the day you can try making fish and chips as swanky as you like, but it will always be fat encased fish and fried potato.
If you want good fish and chips in the Camden area, I'd say give them a go. Yet if I had to choose between eating at Pier 1 and spending £10+ or spending £6.50 at my local and watching American Football via my NFL Game Pass, I'd take my local every time.
