One of the nicer places to come for a walk in Widnes. I'm not sure what's happened to Pex Hill in light of the disasterous program of new house building on green belt, but it used to be somewhat of an oasis. The highest point around and the site of a reservoir, there's an old sandstone quarry to explore/climb in, and a fair amount of open space to explore with the dogs.
Also of note is the observatory at the very top of the hill containing (as far as I can remember) a 16" reflecting telescope. I happened to be there for the opening but none other than Patrick Moore - the gamesmaster himself!
Pex Hill has lovely walks, beautiful views as well as good climbing in the quarry. Definitely the place to walk a dog!
The observatory never seems to be open but I'm well informed you can go up on a Wednesday evening, have always ment to go but still haven't.
Pex Hill is one of the most attractive pieces of land in Widnes. Situated across the road from Cronton Sixth Form College, the entrance is barely visible when driving past, and the winding road that leads up towards the old quarry and visitor centre is bereft of any signage to indicate what you can expect upon arrival.
This is an excellent place for Dog Walkers and ramblers, and the rolling countryside and rugged nature of the hill itself and its most attractive feature. There is a old quarry situated centrally at the site, and is now merely a very large hole in the ground, adorned by foliage.
One note of caution however, a couple of years ago, my brothers dog was viciously attacked by a pack of 3 other dogs whilst my brother was walking him - These dogs almost killed him, and it took many years for my brothers dog to recover his former enthusiasm - Please be careful if you are walking dogs in the area, because my brother never found the owner of the dogs.
Nice place during daytime, but some dogs let loose and not cleaned up mess, forget eveing time seedy actions.
does anybody know if you can use a metal detecter at Pex Hill ? My son has Down syndrome and this is one of the few things he likes doing but finding somewhere to go is a problem, its only a cheap detecter not a high fliying one as its only for fun..be gratefull for any help
