They burst out of the gate with a fantastic meal but pulled up limp for the finale. We started with the lentil soup with croutons that tasted like rosemary puree being mainlined directly into your mouth. Incredible. They also brought around a basket of great foccaccia to accompany.
Then came venison ravioli in a venison sauce. Very rich but exquisitely good. 2 for 2.
The stumble was on a monkfish special. The fish didn't have the flavor I'd hoped for and, served atop some sauteed spinach, just seemed relatively uninspired. The service was spectacular though the poor waiter couldn't hide his disappointment when he saw I only ate half.
Certainly worth a second try given the first two courses. If I could only get back to London...

Passione is tucked away down Charlotte Street, one of the many restaurants in this area, and it's well worth seeking out. We went after hearing it won the Best London Italian restaurant 2005 and although times have changed and they haven't won again, I can definitely see why it's raved about.
All the food is true regional Italian faire. The seasonal flavours and ethically sourced produce is apparent in the traditional flavours conjured up by chef Gennaro Contaldo. Whilst the style of decor is very inviting, like a contemporary country house with a big iron fireplace.
I only visited a few days ago and I tried their signature dish of on-the-bone, slow cooked rabbit, which I wouldn't usually go for as I feel a bit guilty, but it was worth pushing fond childhood memories of Flopsy to the back of my mind. Cooked with pine nuts, garlic and black olives, it was very tender and flavoursome. My friend had the risotto with black truffle and this was also scrumptious. To finish we shared the Gelato Passione (a limoncello and wild strawberry ice cream) and the warm panettone with cream. The waiters were very attentive and friendly and although it does feel slightly cramped as the tables are quite close together, this didn't affect our conversation and the whole evening was really enjoyable. In the traditional Italian way we were given limoncello on the house after our coffees to aid digestion.
This restaurant made me remember why I love Italy so much, so it was definitely worth the higher prices.
