As of 20/07/09: Noto has closed. Very sad.
My review from 19/06/09
This is my favourite Japanese restaurant in Town. They used to be up on the Barbican highwalk and I would go there all the time (years ago). In my opinion, Noto has the best sushi (fresh fish of hight quality) and most authentic Japanese menu (Aki in Clerkenwell comes a close second). It's a great place for lunch in The City and you will be hard pressed to spend more than a tenner (with a wee salad included as a starter). I usually get the chirashi, which is assorted sashimi on a bed of sushi rice. I've gotten noodles there as well and they've come in HUGE bowls. Clientele is primarily Japanese and it is Japanese run. There is a menu, but look for the good stuff to be posted on white sheets of paper on the wall.
I go there at least every fortnight for lunch. The food is authentic Japanese. My favourite is Chuka-soba set (you dont find it in the menu, it is only on the wall like a real Japanese restaurant) which contains Chirashi style sushi and Japanese Ramen (which is Japanese version of Chinese noodle. Confused? It is similar to English version of curry Chicken Koma, get it?)
It is about a tenner per person and drink is free if you go for Japanese green tea (and so as the Japanese style starter salad which they bring to you once you are seated)
