Northern Stage has recently been revamped and a huge extension added. There is a café and wine bar downstairs which is very trendy and fairly reasonably priced during the day. The theatre is very experimental, and many of the performances are staged in the round as opposed to on a traditional proscenium arch which makes the audience feel much more involved with the performance. This is not a low budget theatre however, and the effects I have seen created here are nothing short of breathtaking. Their family performance every Christmas is well produced (note, not a panto!) and often a retelling of a traditional tale e.g. The Snow Queen.

This place has recently been revamped. It's located bang in the centre of the Newcastle University campus. It is a theatre but also has a great restaurant with huge windows overlooking the lawn opposite the Students' Union making it extremely popular with students. It has a very modern airy clean feel to it and the food is excellent. They do tapas mainly but also sandwiches and they have proper thin French fries which are heavenly! I'd recommend the pork sarnie if they still do it when you head there, it's so tender and tasty yum!
The theatre downstairs puts on all sorts of quirky performances, it's definitely worth checking out at some point if you're around town as it tends to have a great variety of shows which are affordable.

Recently revamped form the Playhouse Theatre to the Northern Stage, this is a good place to see a production. Most shows are realy affordable and are so varied and there's a lot on offer with it having three different venue area's.
There's also a bar and some good food available, always important. It's easily reached. The Haymarket bus station is across the road as is the main bus station.

The simplicity of this place is very different from the traditional opulance of older theatres. But this is no bad thing. It is an eminently comfortable theatre, and it's size is decepetive. It feels small enough for people to come away talking about the 'intimacy' of the performance.
The prices of the performance are very reasonable, especially if any special offers are available. You will not get Sir Ian McKellan, or Dame Judy Dench, but that is not a reflection on the quality of the acting which is usually brilliant. If you go to the theatre for the play, not just to be star struck, then the shows here are often a bargain.
Located right opposite the student union of Newcastle University, expect a high student presence in and around the theatre. You may have a little bit of a walk if you want a pre-show drink in a non-student bar.

Having worked in Northern Stage before, I can honestly say that it's a great place in lots of ways. They have always made an effort to put on great shows that break the mould, not merely being interested in pulling in huge revenues by showing mainstream plays. That said, their roster of shows can be hit and miss at times, so be sure to research what's on before planning your trip. There's lots going on in 3 different performance areas, as there's not only a main stage and small stage, but a completely separate lower-level area on the ground floor complete with its own bar that's dedicated to quirky, more independent performances. Check out their well put-together website if you want to know more.
