8 reviews for Muffin Man Tea Shop

If you've ever fancied tea in the 1940s but without the pesky war-time rationing, then the Muffin Man Tea Shop is the place for you.
Wandering around in the freezing cold in High Street Ken, we could have gone into a Costa, Nero, Starbuck but whipped out the trusty iPhone Yelp app and it directed us down a side street. What a find!
Yes, the decor is a bit austere and old school but the menu is not. And the proof was in the gorgeous red velvet, cream cheese topped cupcake I had. Larissa D. indulged with a slice of the Queen's cake, I can't remember the name, but it was nutty, chocolatey goodness.
They have a fabulous looking range of sandwiches and other cakes, and I am definitely coming back for a proper afternoon tea. Those cucumber sandwiches looked TOO good not to. For traditionalists, a pot of tea and a scone with devon cream and you are in heaven.
I don't get to west London much, cos the tubes suck.. but the Muffin Man is enough to get me to round up the ladies and head here. We debated 4 or 5 stars, but the fact that you could linger over a pot of tea with no hassle boosts it to a 5.
After reading reviews of Muffin Man, I was stoked to visit on my trip to London. So I was a tad let down. The thing is, London has a bad rep for food because, well--the food is generally pretty bad. I do not count international fare in this statement, but if you're being honest with yourself, you know it's true.
It's a nice little tea house, although slightly lacking in that "grandmother's breakfast room" vibe I was so hoping for. Everything is plain and clean, with lots of whites and sea greens. The china doesn't have little flowers or toile on it, it's plain white. But that's all okay, as long as you don't get your hopes up.
The breakfast was on par, eggs and toast are hard to screw up. The chocolate cake was actually pretty dry, but the jasmine tea was authentic and good. I saw an array of cookies that looked good, but alas was unable to return to try some. I came here with a friend who loved this place so much she ate there two or three more times. It's very quiet and a good place to think.
Worth a try, and very, very close to the train station.
What an epic fall from glory, Muffin Man.
But nothing can excuse the fact that you used stale bread for my tea sandwiches.
Or the fact that the buttercream frosting on my tea cake tasted like it was made with margarine and that the lemon filling was a suspiciously neon yellow colour.
Afternoon tea SACRILEGE!
It's shameful.

A lovely quiet little shop; tea, scones, and other good things to eat in a neighbourhood otherwise full of the usual corporate sameness.
The service is a bit slow, but frankly that's part of the charm of this place. Don't go if you're on the run, but if you've got an hour to relax with a friend, this place is perfect.
There's something delightfully British about the Muffin Man. I've been here a couple of times on the recommendation from a friend, and found the clientele as well as the staff warm and friendly. The shop decor is quaint and in keeping with tea room charm and the Kensington neighbourhood with none of its pretensions.
We had scones and tea, brought to us in a pretty flowered tea set, and although the service left a little to be desired, I think you really come here to relax, not to rush yourself. There are of course muffins and cakes a plenty as well as freshly made sandwiches. Watch out, you could end up with a muffin top.
Don't give up on it! The first time me and my boy tried to go here, the service was awful; we were seated and then ignored for about 10-15 minutes, despite our attempts to flag people down. If you saw how small the place was, you'd understand why that would be appalling. However, it was right across the street from our hotel, so we tried again. This time, service was prompt and friendly. Get the house blend tea, it is delicious and they do tasty paninis and sandwiches as well as tea/scones/cakes.
This is my absolute favorite place for tea. It's not pretentious, everything is delicioso, and the prices are fine. The Devonshire cream is unique (at least to me), and all the scones and jams and such have just about the right amount of sweetness. It's perfect.
I found this place on my first trip to London--my flat was in the neighborhood. Cramped as anything, but the Devon Cream Tea's delicious--scones, Devon cream, jam, and tea. Simple and good. Both the house blend and Earl Grey teas are worth the sipping. I now make it a point to go over there every time I'm in London, even when I'm not going anywhere near Kensington otherwise.
