I got a 50% off voucher to go to mosko and can't ever resist a bargain so went along one snowy saturday afternoon - it has moved to Dublin St which confused me a bit. Anyway, I've been before and had a terrible experience but thought I would take the chance.
Things seem to have changed a bit with everything scaled down from before, less bustling, more business. The staff were pleasant and my hairdresser spent a reassuring amount of time discussing what I wanted. The massage was nice too. I'm really pleased with the haircut and the hairdresser was relaxed and friendly and communicative so I would defintely go back to her.
Went there twice and both times left disappointed. Needless to say I won't be back. Maybe I'm just too demanding: i expect more than a simple cut and colour from my hairdresser. I expect bespoke advice on what goes best with the shape of my face, the colour of my skin, the season and all those things I don't have a clue about. In particular, when the hair salon charges fees like Mosko does!!
Both times I went there, I had to drive the process. They ask me what cut and colour I think looks good on me, and that's what I end up with. It almost makes me wonder whether I missed my calling and should have been a hair stylist. Obviously the Mosko senior stylists do, as they need to ask me for ideas, instead of bringing in their own ideas based on their supposed expert knowledge.
Both times I left the salon feeling a bit deflated. Yes, the cut was nice and the colour looked good. The glass of wine offered was a nice touch. But at the end of the day I was after a new look inspired by an enthusiastic stylist who wasn't afraid to give her/his opinion about would suit me best. And that's not what I got.
A little footnote: at my second visit the guy doing my head massage kept gravitating towards my breasts instead of my head (anything but relaxing). And if that wasn't bad enough, he also managed to twist a few nerves in my neck, resulting in me not being able to turn my neck and shoulders for three days after!
My experiences of Mosko are really uneven.
The first time I went, my stylist spent ages going over what I liked, what would suit me, the ways that I style my hair at home etc and I got an amazing cut and colour.
At my next appointment, my stylist was running late on a previous client, and she then proceeded to spend a further 45 minutes in the back room eating her lunch while I was kept waiting without even an offer of a cup of tea. I'm not annoyed that she had to take her break, but 45 minutes, which included time to bitch with the receptionist was a bit much. Had she phoned me to let me know she was running late, or even offered a cuppa as previous hairdressers have done, I wouldn't be complaining. Cut wasn't great that day, and she seemed to rush doing my highlights so she wouldn't be running late for her next client. Certainly didn't feel a valued customer.
I went back anyway, and had a rotten time again. This time, she left my blonde foils in for AGES. It was at least 25 minutes after the heat developer alarm had gone off before she came and saw to me. Some of my highlights were virtually white! She thought it was edgy. I thought my fine hair would probably break off.
I gave it one last go, and we were back to an amazingly attentative service, and she even styled my hair all fancy when I mentioned it was my birthday the following day.
I changed to a different salon after that, because I couldn't be bothered with the ups and downs of being their client! Now, I give hairdressers two chances, and if they blow it twice, I find somewhere better.
Very up to date with latest hairstyles , staff very professional , offered tea or wine etc on visit , only drawback is quite expensive but considering location acceptable. They send you latest offers on regular basis.
I went here for the first time after having a negative experience at Urban on Howe Street, and am pleased with the move. I saw Linden who cut my hair very well, and was really attentive and pleasant. Best of all, she trims my fringe and shaves the back for free (it was Urban's refusal to do so that caused me to leave after years of going there for my cuts). The salon is very small and there is usually a large number of staff members compared to clients, which could feel intimidating, but it didn't bother me. The shoulder massage, given by a salon junior after your wash, is a nice idea but feels a little awkward and automated.
I've since recommended Linden to a friend, and will continue to do so. The opening hours are fantastic too I can pop along after a late shift at work and get a quick trim as they don't shut until 9 p.m. most days.
I felt iffy about going to Mosko after reading some negative reviews here and on other sites, but I ended up being very pleased with my haircut and with the service I received. Linden is a great stylist who really listened to what I wanted and delivered a great haircut. The negative reviews, however, had one thing right; the hair washing basins are, by a very very long way, the most uncomfortable, painful basins ever devised. I usually love having my hair washed before a cut but I just wanted it to be over as the basin was SO PAINFUL to my neck and shoulders. The staff seemed aware of the issue but I reckon it should be seen to. That's the only reason I would give them 4/5 stars.
I had an ok cut here by a competent stylist. The premises are large and airy, but quite dated and could perhaps benefit from modernisation. However, the sinks are comfortable (I often get a real creak in my neck when having my hair washed!) and the staff are attentive and polite. The massage is one of the best offered in a salon, but would probably be better if it weren't done through layers of towels and salon gowns. They also do a really good recommend a friend deal, though you are tied to one particular stylist from then on. If it were closer to hom I might be more inclined to return!
Situated in the centre of Edinburgh's Old Town, Mosko is a modern salon with friendly staff. The salon has a full range of stylists, from newly qualifieds to senior staff, so there's an appointment to fit every budget. The salon's long opening hours (including Sundays) also mean I've never had a problem getting an appointment. I've had appointments with a range of stylists and always been impressed with the service. The head massage is particularly good! In addition, the salon has previously offered a number of half price colour promotions, which are always very welcome to those missing their long gone student discounts, and features in the snapfax discounts, which is again very useful.
I have cut my own hair for years but decided to treat myself to a decent hair cut and colour. I found Mosko in my council benefit book so decided to give it a try. When the girl that was doing my hair first came over I wanted to run. She looked like she was just out of high school. She gave me a seat and we had a long chat about what I wanted done and gave me lots of ideas of styles to help me style my really curly hair. We then chatted about colour to make my natural auburn really stand out. Once she was finished everything I was really impressed I looked up to date but still age appropriate. She wrote done the shampoo and serum I should use but I didnt feel pressure to buy. She also gave me a voucher to take away. I willl definetly go back to Lyndon again and I am sending my daughter to her for an update.
Shocking! Worst Hair Up I have ever had.
I dont normally write reviews However I got a last minute appointment at the Dublin Street salon for a hair up. No problem they said! I went along and was asked what I wanted. I gave a brief idea but gave they guy a bit of free reign to put my hair up his way.
Straightners were dragged through my hair to curl the ends and it was swept to one side and pinned behind my ear leaving the front left section hanging forward. I asked for the front section to be pinned back as it looked dry and frizzy. I also questoned whether the curl would hold throughout the day. My hair is heavy and doesnt usually hold a 'ghd curl' for longer than a few hours. The stylist assured me it would and showered me in hairspray before declaring it 'finished'. I had been in the salon less than 15 minutes. I got home about 10 minutes later in tears. The pins had already begun lose grip and the 'height' had dropped along with some of the curls.
I called to complain and returned to the salon approx 30 mins later to have my hair redone by someone else. The female stylist proceeded to sweep my hair to the other side and attempted to pin all of my hair behind my right ear in a 'messy bun'. I again questioned if this would hold and was assured it would. It didnt. Half way through dinner a number of pins were visibly sticking out and the bun had lost its structure and shape.
I cant understand how a city centre salon could have got this so wrong. It was a simple hair up. Stating 'curls and pinned up' isnt being to fussy is it ? Toom uch to ask for ?
This salon either has no concept of professionalism or no experience of putting hair up. What were they thinking I have mid length heavy hair. Did they have a good laugh after I left at sending me away with the worst hair up I have ever seen?
I should have just booked in advance at my usual salon (JM Hair). I will never go to another salon again.
I visited this salon on saturday the 8th of May. never before have i felt a need to add a review but felt i should. The salon was really busy and had a fantastic buzz around it, The staff were helpful and friendly and as i am quite a nervous person this put me completely at ease. even although the salon was busy i didnt have to wait any length of time until my stylist Leanne came over and introduced herself to me and took me over for a consultation. i wanted a complete restyle and for the first time ever the stylist really listened to what i wanted and then she gave me her ideas about what she thought would suit me best not just with the cut but with my colour as well. The trainee that asissted Leanne (i think her name was lindsay) was also very pleasant and talked me through the home care products that would be useful for me to use at home. The massage i recieved was fantastic and i would recommend it to everyone! As i was having a lot of my hair cut off Leanne explained to me what was happening as she worked which stopped me panicking at loosing so much hair. when Leanne finished i was delighted at the end result. The cut and colour made me feel like a million dollars and when i left i felt i was looking at myself in all the shop windows. i rebooked whilst i was paying my bill and was delighted to find that by doing this i would recieve a discount on my next visit and i was also given an introduce a friend voucher which i have already given to one of my friends and which also benefits me with a discount. i am so pleased with the whole experience i had that i felt i wanted to share it.
