18 Gloucester Road London SW7 4RB - best Indian Food
Emily Rose Reeder
We were looking to have some Indian food during our visit to London but didn't have much selection in the area we were staying (high street Kensington). We walked by this place earlier and checked it out on yelp and TA and decided to give it a try. We showed up and we were greeted at the door and invited in, from that moment till we left, the service was unbelievable and by far the best service I've ever received in London!
The meal was exactly what we were looking for, great flavours nice selection and food was served quick and hot. It was the best Indian food I've ever had but it was exactly what we were looking for and the service made it that much better! Great job and thanks for a great meal.
Excellent food, excellent service. The waiters basically spoonfeed you.
The decoration is really nicely done.
Maybe the only criticism I could make is that the portions are a bit too small...
I really wanted to love this place as my fellow yelpers had great things to say about it. But I can't rave about my experience. Very mediocre.
The food was good but I've had better Indian food in Seattle. The portions were a bit small but that's very typical of Indian restaurants so I'm not complaining. The service was indeed extremely attentive (as noted by other yelpers), and almost too much so. The waiter put the napkin in my husband's lap and picked up every crumb from the table immediately after we finished eating. I feel like if the service is supposed to be so great, why do we have to buy water for 3.99?
The other part that I wasn't thrilled about was they kept trying to upsell us without making it clear what the prices were. In America, many Indian restaurants bring you chappatti for free at the beginning of the meal. Here they brought it at the beginning but then they charged for it. They brought us two orders of rice without asking if we wanted them both. The server tried to bring us mangos at the end of the meal. When the check came, it was so scribbled that it was hard to tell what we were paying for. Was service charge included? We couldn't tell and therefore tipped. It felt like they were trying to get as much money out of us as possible while leaving us confused.
There are several more indian restaurants in the same neighborhood and I will try a different one next time. Three stars for solid food though.
The food here was almost as good as Woodlands. For some reason I enjoyed the food there a bit more, but the service here was outstanding. Really fast, very friendly, and quick to clean up your table. I hate it when some waiters try to take the plate away before you are finished. I think this is more with NYC than with London, but these waiters were on the ball. They gave great advice, seated us right away, and went out of their way to get the door as we were leaving. For some reason I had the bug for Indian and both Memories of India and Woodlands did not disappoint. Also crowded which is good at times since there are other Indian restuarants nearby that were not as crowded.
Visitors to London, we found ourselves at the Bailey Hotel and asked the hotel concierge for his recommendation on good, unpretentious Indian food in the neighborhood, and Memories of India was one of his picks. The atmosphere was pleasantly warm and the wait staff friendly and welcoming. The menu was easy to navigate and if a question arose it was easily answered. We had a variety of classics and treated to a palette of wonderful flavors and taste bud sensations. The heat was there if wanted or not. I would recommend this establishment to anyone. We had a wonderful meal of that showcased a small portion of India.
Memories of India has several spots around London. This is the best Indian food I have had anywhere in the world. I give the food here a 5++. I have eaten at Memories of India probably 5 times and every time it exceeds my expectations. The food melts in your mouth and every plate I have tried has been excellent. I think about flying to London just to eat at this restaurant.
Nice restaurant with attentive staff and good food. I enjoyed it a great deal though my dining companion thought it left room for improvement. We mentioned we were staying at the Hotel Bailey (the concierge Raymond had recommended this place to us) and I still wonder if that was why we received such attentive service. Attentive is an understatement, we were treated like the only people there even though it was half full. No reservation and they welcomed us and seated us immediately. Walking distance to Gloucester Tube Station.
I had heard that London had some exquisite Indian favors, and Memories of India brings them all together ! My concierge recommended this restaurant and I was very pleased. Being a newcomer to Indian food, I asked the waiter for some recommendations. He started us with a meat somosa and a vegetable somosa . It was good, but no competition to our main course. The chicken mossala and lamb curry were excellent ! You can't beat good food in a great environment. I highly recommend Memories of India and plan to make this a regular stop on my future visits to the UK.
We visited from the San Francisco Bay Area and this was close to our apartment. Their service was great and I LOVE indian food and was not disappointed. They do not necessarily tell you what is "extra" and their bill is hand scribbled so you have to trust that it is correct. My husband had the lamb curry-it was "ok". The naan was great. I had the king prawn masala and loved it, although sweeter than normal, I loved it. They were wonderful with our toddler and had a little seat for her. Perfect night! Thanks for the great service.
It is a typical small and simple Indian restaurant that serves a good variety of foods. The service is quick and attentive, although they try to upsell you sometimes. The quality of the food is excellent, better than at similarly priced Indian restaurants. It is not a destination place, but if you are in the area it is an excellent choice.
Had the deluxe meal for two. Horrible experience. The meat was dry. The curry was bland. The service was lethargic and disorganized (we had two separate people come to take our order)
Food was very good but not exceptional. Service was very good. Prices are very good for this neighborhood.
Food was good but service pushy. They kinda drag you in from the sidewalk when they spy you reading the menu, then suggest all the most expensive items and start writing them on the order pad before you even agree to it.
Been around forever. Neighourhood trad Indian although we travel by tube to it. Good prices and really good food.
