My. Favorite. Pub.

Perfect on the weekdays and Sundays. Very chill and sprawling with a mixed bag of youngin' and older locals. Perfect on weekend evenings when you want a bit more upbeat, fresh and fun. Not too hip-happening, but there's a nice crowd, a very good music selection (via dj or someone's ipod) with the perfect level of crowdedness to accomodate your friends and to chat up your neighbor. If you're lucky, grab one of the booths in the back corner near the steps.

They have a super tasty Sunday Roast (with a good vegetarian option!), but I'd steer clear of the nachos and quesadillas.

This pub used to be very run of the mill kinda
one up from wetherspoons . I popped in this afternoon
for a pint jan 2010 and was pleasantly surprised by the
change having drank a guiness I was tempted by the
menu I'm very wary of gastro pub menus but I tried the
slow cooked belly pork with roasted apples black pudding
mash and a glossy gravy £10
I must say it was very well cooked the portion size and presentation
perfect. I can honestly say it was the best food I have had the
pleasure to eat in a pub for a very long time.

The interior is very well balanced woody and mellowed. The
staff were very efficient and didn't get in your face.
I will be going back on Sunday with my son to see if
their Sunday roast is up to scratch . I have found it very
hard to find a pub in London with decent food so it was a pleasant
surprise to find this place!

Group of 8 of us came in at 12:30 on Wed afternoon for lunch.

Big signs urged us to try the mulled wine or winter Pimm's. OK, mulled wine, please. "Didn't make it". OK, winter Pimm's please. "Didn't make it". OK, just a pint of London Pride. "Keg's empty". (No sign, by the way). OK, glass of overpriced cabernet. That they had -- and it was sour, undrinkable plonk.

Ordered sirloin steak, medium rare. Got an unidentifiable slab of rubbery meat, cooked well done. The pepper sauce that came with it was foul. Chips were decent, oddly enough.

Where I hail from, the USA, alcohol regulation seems downright draconian compared to the UK.  Most notable to me was the fact that one can grab a pint at the bar and just waltz out the front door with it at most pubs.  There was no heavily bordered "Certified Outdoor Drinking Zone" that are usually made up of ugly planters and chains in the States and no associated risk of being arrested for going past the geraniums.

So, after witnessing this phenomenon at countless pubs across the city, we figured it was time to take advantage of this opportunity.  We saddled up to the bar which was a little busy at the time in the late afternoon.  The interior something of a seamless mix of the modern and traditional (but mostly modern).  There is a lot of lightly colored wood and plently of tables are comfortable looking couches tucked away.  After one sloshed debutante left all her change behind after paying for her order, the visibly confused bartender took our order for a Suffolk Cyder and a Bulmer's Apple Cider, which are just a few of their fantastic taps.  It was about that time that a slightly wide Cockney pegged me in the back with a paper airplane which was originally destined for his mate, standing next to me.  He was amusingly apologetic about it.

On our way out, pint glass in hand, something in the back of my head went "WTF?! You can't do that!"  but I went on ignoring it and we grabbed ourselves a shelf at one of the windows.  Both the Suffolk and Bulmer's were perfect, as so many of our pints were while in London.  And so we stood there and conversed, enjoying our ciders; it was wonderful.  Society wasn't devolving into a chaotic sludge, brimstone wasn't falling from the sky.  We even managed to hear one side of a conversation spoken in Catalan, which can only be described as sounding like Spanish attempting to be spoken above the sound of stones in a spinning blender.  We even had a view of the upside-down cruise boat across the street which I hear is called the Brunswick Centre.  Whatever, it looks like a capsized ocean liner to me.

Good cider, Cockney paper airplane crashes, drinking outside without fear, Catalan phone conversations and capsized ships.  This was a pub experience I won't soon forget.

I am just totally fond of this place!  Really wide open spaces, interesting seating, you feel like you can sort of mentally and physically spread out and stay awhile.  The food was on the high side of average, and the drinks were decently priced.  Located in Bloomsbury, you get a smart and interesting crowd of diverse people without having to put up with too many tourists behaving badly.    (DISCLAIMER:  I say this like I'm a townie, but honestly I'm just a really I'm an American recently graduated student posing as a local).  I also like that there is plenty of outdoor seating if you're in the mood for an afternoon pint outside when the weather is decent.  It's also located right across from the Brunswick Center where there are any number of decent chain restaurants to choose from if you're looking for a dinner and date night type feel.

The one thing that amazed my American brain when I got to London was the fact that people could drink outside. OUTSIDE!!?!? CRAZY!! So I decided that Marquis would be the place where I would take my drink outside.

The sole reason why this place is getting 5 stars because it is HERE where I discovered Bulmer's Pear Cider (on Draft, not to be confused with Magner's/Bulmer's). Thank GOODNESS the original beer I wanted was not available, otherwise Bulmer's would still be unknown to me. So as a thank you, you get 5 stars!

Beer definitely tastes better when you can drink it outside. Even though it felt slightly wrong to be walking out of a pub with a drink in my hand, I enjoyed it immensely. :)

It was raining hard and I needed cover. The Marquis of Cornwallis welcomed me in.

The bar is spacious with tables and chairs dotted around the floor in a non-linear fashion, with the odd couch and booth style seat against he walls. There is an upstairs area that is also spacious and has a living room vibe that is soothing.

The bar itself has a great selection of draught and for its location it isn't expensive. The food menu although I didn't try it had an above average contemporary pub selection.

Marquis would not be a destination pub for me. It looks good, has decent menu's and had a very impressive crowd for 4:30 in the afternoon, but paid for wifi is a big turn off.

Sometimes men leer at me when I walk by the Marquis of Cornwallis during the day.

One night I got one foot in the door to find what I can only describe as a rave on the ground floor, just without the glow sticks.  The other foot remained outside.

But then there was that one time I visited, and the atmosphere was laid back.  The other foot made it inside, and I saw the large well-stocked bar.  Sure, the clientele was a little student-y and tourist-y because of all the halls of residence in the area and the Holiday Inn across the street.  But it's Bloomsbury.  No one lives in Bloomsbury but students and transients.  I went upstairs.

I found lots of comfortable seating in an open floor plan.
I found another bar.
I found Fruli!
I found a local boozer.

(Except when it turns into Dance Party Extravaganza '09!!!1!)

The Marquis of Cornwallis is a pub on Marchmont Street. It is quite large, set across two floors. Both floors are open plan. The ground floor is larger and smartly decorated. The upper room is smaller and looks more like a traditional pub. Both floors have a bar which is fully stocked with a good selection of beers.

The crowd is mixed in terms of ages with many students as well as tourists and local workers. The staff are efficient and pleasant enough. Though it is quite fun and lively at night I prefer it as a place for daytime drinking.

It is also alongside the Brunswick centre and so ideal for a drink before a cinema or after shopping.

With a lively mix of locals and students, The Marquis of Cornwallis is a relaxed but fun pub just a stone's throw from the famous Brunswick Centre.  The decor is traditional but sophisticated with large heavy wood tables and chairs and more comfortable leather sofas towads the back, there is also a huge bar meaning that drinks waiting times are cut down considerably.  The staff are fiendly and efficient even when things get a little crowded which they invariably do on a Friday evening.

The Marquis is an out and out modern gastropub and as such features a welath of tasty but affordable meals from traditional English dishes like cottage pie to more European and Asian oriented food.  Drinks-wise there is a massive selection of wines, beers, ciders and soft drinks catering to all tastes.

A perfect place to unwind at lunchtime or after work, the Marquis is a welcome relief from the hectic life of London.

The Marquis is lively, with a good mix of locals and students, which, in the hotel infested area around Bloomsbury, this is relatively unusual. Serving a wide range of beers and ciders, and with a reasonable mix of music, the pub is a popular place for Friday or Saturday night drinks. The outside area has seating in the summer, but with a view of either the spectacularly ugly Holiday Inn or the slightly less unattractive Brunswick Centre, it would have to be a particularly hot day to tempt me outside.
