The building facade is a sight to see. But I think I've been spoiled by the sights of grand marches like the Jean-Talon market in Montreal, so I've been trying to be understanding to this indoor marketplace, which I thought was very small. We came at 7:30am, and the stalls were open, except for the seafood market, which was still setting up. I believe this is a great place for home cooks and local restaurateurs to pick up their fresh ingredients, and there's probably everything you're looking for in a market ins the center of the old Avignon, but for jaded tourists like me, I thought it was over-hyped.
To the east of the palais des papes, in the old Jewish quarter, lies this modern market, full of interesting stalls selling everything you would expect - flowers, fruit and veg, meat, fish, bread, cheese, wines. Great place to put together a picnic, as there are several stalls selling prepared food like tartes, salads, etc.
