I've been meaning to have a proper look in here after passing it everyday on the bus. I finally made it inside on a Sunday a few weeks ago. Attracted by the giant sign letter outside, they'd look great at home but I can think of better ways to spend £200.
It's a tiny little shop, stuffed full of beautiful antiques. The owner was sat at the back, listening to records on the most incredible record player I've ever seen, which, unfortunately was not for sale. We spent a few minutes marvelling at the vintage purses, fur coats & hats, and rifled through the antiques. My friend bought a miniature gun for a Christmas present.
Nothing was especially cheap, but I suppose you'd expect that from its location.
M. Goldstein, formerly called 67 Hackney Road, must be the coolest and quirkiest shop that I've come across lately. I'm not sure what the history behind this place is, as there is no website, no phone number, or any other info on the web about this place. Yeah kids, you can't get more underground then this - it's super unground.
I spoke to a guy who worked there, I'm pretty sure he owns the place, and he said he was actually building the website so be patient. The two things he told me were: 1) The name M.Goldstein comes from the old owner, they're just hanging on to the old name and sign and 2) he was taking photos of the shop front. So I'm guessing it could take a while before you can find these cool cats online.
The guy who ran the place had a sort of Teddy Boy look going on, very cool. The stuff they sell is super cool too. From vintage clothes and shoes to second hand furniture, nick naks, records, junk, vintage fabric and lots of other goodies you really need to dig in to as the shop is a bit chaotic with stuff being just about everywhere.
I was drawn to the shop cause I noticed the signage letters outside. I've been looking for these big lit up things (not sure how you call them) for ages after spotting one on a Berlin market for 50 Euros, but at M. Goldstein these beauties were £200. I told the dude I would come back later, but there is no way I'm going to spend £200 on a old letter that's been taken down from a building. But I'm sure, since it's near Columbia Road and Broadway Market and all, there will be others that are willing to pay this kind of money. I think I'd rather hire a van, drive to Berlin, eat a Frankfurter, and buy a letter for 50 euros from a sweet old German dude.
ps: how cute is that bunting?
