La Maison is a high end chocolatier. They do the usual chocolate bars, drinking chocolate and truffles.

However, I want to mention them specially for their heavenly macarons. They come in 5 flavours and all do taste distinctly different although they're all chocolate flavour. Possibly the best chocolate macarons in London.

La Maison Du Chocolat is second to none.  Yes, Godiva's very good, but this...this is the best.

The shop attendant offers my friend and I each a piece of dark chocolate rum raisin.  My mouth is filled with sensation and flavor: the crackling of the dark chocolate shell, then the delicate, soft, rum raisin center.

But the bomb is their Fine Champagne Truffles: "the center is a smooth, creamy ganache delicately infused with Fine Champagne cognac covered with a layer of dark chocolate and dusted cocoa powder".  My advice?  Due to the cognac infusion, the truffle is best eaten within three days.

For you milk chocolate fans...don't even try.  Dark chocolate's where it's at, and it's at La Maison Du Chocolate.

Next to the Paris location, this location rates at the top of my list for Chocolat.  Sorry, New York, your service pales in comparison.

In the London shop I was treated as more than a tourist or someone with a passing interest and I was assisted through the store by a very helpful young lady who kindly gathered my requested items, packaged them nicely for our trip back to the states and then continued to do the same when I decided I wanted to buy more.

On a side note, I often order from La Maison Du Chocolat and delivery is always prompt and the chocolate always packaged with a cold pack to ensure un-melted delivery to Utah.  The only complaint with the online system would be lack of availability of certain items at different times.  But I am sure that is to guarantee freshness.

The House of Chocolate.  Need I say more?  This place could be better if it was actually mortar and brick of chocolate, but its just a really building with chocolate in it.  Shame, because I'd pull a Gretel and eat the walls away like a termite.

The options in this store are endless. Little geometric shapes of sugary joy filled with orange liqour, fresh ginger, fennel-flavoured ganache, tea infused ganache, kirsch mousse, hot dog flavoured cream and other such lovely inventions.  Don't forget the pastries and chocolate spread.  There is a small cafe area in the back if you prefer to do a tasting on premises.

Unfortunately like most chocolate shops and most places square in the West End, this place is no inexpensive world of delights.  If your money tree is just a seedling, like mine, waiting to grow and flourish with bills of every denomination, then you probably won't want to buy something large.

I tasted their chocolate spread though, it was yummy.  Yummy yummy yummy in my tummy tummy tummy.

It's not possible to make chocolate as delicious as this. Trust me. I can easily eat a large packet of minstrals in one sitting (should I be embarrassed?) or a mega bar of Brut Sao Tome but I surprised myself at La Maison du Chocolat. Here's the story.

It's not that I wanted to go inside the shop but like love, it's something that pulls you in before you can stop it. The shop is suitably Parisian and smells deep and decadent. Then, behind glass cases, like precious jewels lie rows of truffles with ganache, nut, nougat and cream fillings. Ha, I smirked to myself, what a small piece of chocolate for a very large price. The assistant, in his smart black suit, waited patiently while I vacillated, oscillated.

I settled for a triangle of dark chocolate with a nougat filling. As if it was a bit of gold dust, I nibbled a tiny corner. I wanted as many bites for my big bucks as possible. I would be a fool to describe the absolute purity that was condensed into that small bite. It's a bit like great poetry. Any unnecessary words are stripped away, leaving only essence.

Two bites later and truly I was satisfied. Did I say that? And that's the magic of something that wonderful.
