The selection of gyms in London is actually pretty dire. I joined this one after looking at a few. I do like the gym floor - although it does concern me that there are only two of the machines I like to use there. However, compared to other gyms in my commuting area, its better than those. The changing rooms are not very good - in my opinion too cramped. There have been two occasions where no hygenine towels were available and the cleaning of the gym appears to take place when members are in. Really this should happen before opening.
I've never been to a gym that I thought was perfect (and I've been in a lot) - however this one is ok. Ideally, it would be bigger all round, and have better opening hours (9-5) at the weekend is not really that good.
I visited this gym after moving into the area. It sits just behind Westferry station along the road from Cineworld cinema. You can get a free one day pass for all LA Fitness gyms and this gave me the chance to check it out. As it is not based in the city this gym has the advantage of having a lot more space and they have really made use of it.
The lower floor is full of the cardio machines with a good selection of treadmills and cross trainers. Up on the second level is where the weight machines are and the free weights. There is a lot of room on this level so you never have to wait for free places. The gym also has a pool and sauna room. This is a great gym and the offers they do for monthly fees are worth it.
This gym was ok. They don't have my favourite machine, the dip machine with assist on it. I am weak, I guess that's why I'm going to the gym. Other than that there is a pool, sauna, lessons room, cardio area and weight area. It gets kinda crowded during peak hours and not enough areas to stretch it out after working out.
This is not a gym. I've stayed in hotels that had better setups than this. I had a free 3 day pass and was ready to walk out after seeing what they had regarding free weights. It's also full of those crappy Technogym brand machines and cardio equipment. Everything was on top of each other, cramped and had no meaning to how it was arranged. Whoever designed this setup never worked out in their life.
The men's changing room gets very dirty and wet during peak hours. Lately, there's always problem with hot water shower apparently issue with boiler but took a while to rectify.
If you go during peak hours, chances of you getting to use a decent machine is really slim. Have to wait or request fellow gym goers to swap. Dumb-bells are scattered all over the free-weight area and staff just turn a blind eye. Probably the responsibilty of gym goers to put back the free weights on the stack but no body seems to care
Gym manager is forever on conference call when I ask to speak with him. I have terminated my contract with them recently and was sent a 2 seven-day guest pass to use the gym facilities as a goodwill gesture. Was told that I could drop in to my old gym and use the guest pass anytime before it expires in May 2013. Unfortunately when I turn up during off-peak period, receptionist told me that I need to book an appointment beforehand another sales tactic to get me back on their books. Inconsistent information given and again, when asked to speak with manager, I was told that he's in a conference call Again!
I would never go back to LA Fitness after this latest unpleasant encounter. Need to get their act together and not just focusing on getting new customers! Avoid at all cost, at least the one in West India Quay!!!
