LA Fitness a convenient way to lose weight and get a killer body. The place is small, and having been around Glasgow for four years on a daily basis I had never known it was there! Was I blind? In my defense it is underground, just a few blocks up from Central Station on Argyle Street, how convenient! I think...no wait I know that convenience is a major factor when deciding upon a gym and membership. If it isn't for you then you must have some mean strength of will because I will find any excuse not to go.
Not at LA, the ideal gym for the city centre working person. The gym itself houses a CV and weights area in a pretty small space. There is always space to do what you want, quite and busy at the same time, makes this gym appealing. A vast range of classes are on offer very regularly, not to mention the free personal training session, as well as a pool area to wash away a hard day at work before jumpng on the train home.
LA is fantastic although understated.
I was a member until quite recently, had been a member since 2004.
As the first gym I'd ever joined it done the job for quite some time, but over the years the equipment and facilities got more and more run down. In my 7 years+ as a member I can recall the weights and some of the machines being updated once.
Matts on the floor were not attached properly, weights missing end caps and centre pieces (meaning they don't securely sit on bars without wobbling about).
The staff used to be friendly and enthusiastic but over the years staff turnover noticeably increased and they generally seemed miserable, confrontational or disinterested in any comments. Not all staff, but most.
The gym used to advertise having a steam room, which it didn't have, furthermore a couple of years ago they got rid of the jacuzzi leaving only a sauna in the pool area. Several times during my membership the hot water system was off for extended periods (a month or so you couldn't take a warm shower) and such issues took a loooong time for them to address.
I should've cancelled my membership years ago and joined somewhere better, however I foolishly wasted money on them as the cost of my membership went up and the quality of service and overall standard of the gym dropped.
Now a Dave Lloyd member, and despite being just under twice as much a month what you get back for the money is ten times as good as LA Sh*tness ever could dream of offering.
DO NOT JOIN LA FITNESS.
I wanted to join a good gym in glasgow and thought these guys looked the business. You have to sign up to a years contract that you cant get out of. Staff where eager to sign you up and once you give your details that is no smile from the staff not even a hello and that put me off in going to this particular gym alone its hard enough working with people who are sad and depressed and having then to go to a gym that has a more depressing atmosphere than the people that you have to work with, not that l was expecting that anyway.
You are allocated a number and given a members card. My first week or two at the gym was filled with cut throat staff who where chasing sales as in personal training. I hired a fitness instructor that cost in excess of £400 and you get two free sessions, staff where coming up to me bitching why am l using them for "they are sh*te" and they would do a better deal with me, Some fitness instructors are only paid by members for one 2 one training and not by the gym.
On many a occasion the equipment would be worn out or being repaired. At times the gym is too busy and as if they take on too many members and they cannot handle, l often sat on the side to wait for the use of equipment as there where too many people in the gym.
Changing rooms where often filthy and where never cleaned. I would not recommend this gym. If there was a minus star this place would have a minus vote from me.
I'm not being cynical or pretentious when I write this, but LA Fitness is the worst 'gym' I have ever had the misfortune to sign up to. I went literally 5 times in a year, and not just because I am lazy, ahem...
The gym itself is small and underground so there is no natural light, and it also feels dingy and damp.
Their sales technique is ruthless and everyone is über friendly, that is, until you sign up. Then you become gym member 03956 or whatever number they give you and may as well just be a bank account number.
During each of my [granted, few] workouts there, gym floor staff never once introduced themselves, offered advice, helped or did anything but chat amongst themselves.
The changing rooms and showers were completely filthy when I was a member (last year), and despite bringing it to the attention of the gum-chewing, wasp swallowing receptionist, it never got better.
The gym is also used by the adjoining hotel, so if you're going for swimming, forget it. There's only so many tourists having a leisurely dip one can handle in 10 laps.
Personally, I wish I had stayed on at the other gym I was a member of, as I used to go there religiously.... Don't be sucked in by their £20/month membership... Its a waste of your time and money - join a proper gym, get a proper induction, get a smile on the way in, get friendly gym-floor staff and actually get fit whilst enjoying it.
A handy gym for those living or working in the city centre of Glasgow adjacent to the Radisson hotel and across from Glasgow Central Station.
It has all the facilities of a gym including weight benches, running machines, exercise bikes, toning machines, a spin room and swimming pool with Jacuzzi and sauna. Also there is a large space for a variety of exercise classes to take place raging from Boxercise to Tums, bums, thighs all held by energetic instructors.
The gym can be busy at peak times but there is also a range of discounts to be had by members who only come during the day or weekends when quieter. There is also a spa in the same building offering treatments, massages and sun beds.
this gym is located in the basement of the radisson hotel building but it has its own separate entrance round the corner - perfectly sited for city office workers to nip in before/after work and just across from central railway station
i'm not a member but did take a trial and found it was not for me due to the claustrophobic atmosphere - it was completely full that day / no room to move around - all the equipment is placed very close together and you don't have any real personal space - suppose this is ideal for the people who join gyms to make friendships ;)
there is also a small pool but its in the same area as the gym and therefore not the peaceful oasis I was looking for - very noisy all over
however it is the ideal way to meet members / make new friends ;)
This gym is very easy to miss if you don't go looking for it as it's actually underground with just the entrance on the ground floor. Located very centrally, within a minute of Central Station, it is fully airconditioned and very well equipped with a full cohort of gym equipment, free weights and even a spin room. The changing rooms are also well kept and there are lockers available. Given it's location and the quality of the facilities, it is understandably quite expensive but if you work in the city centre and are looking for somewhere you can go at lunch or on the way home it could be an idea choice. Unfortunately parking nearby is quite difficult.
