I've been to Kimantra a few times now; as spas go I'd call it my local. And it's okay. I wouldn't rave about it or tell you that you *have* to go here, but it's pretty decent.
I called up today very last minute and they managed to fit me in. When I arrived it was a bit odd, 3 receptionists stood at the counter - staring at me. Felt like going into one of those bitchy MAC makeup stores. Whatever.
If it's your first time at Kimantra they make you fill out a form telling them about any illnesses or issues you have. My masseuse, Ken, turned out to be a guy, which was pretty surprising as they never told me that on the phone or when I arrived. I think when it's a woman booking the appointment, it's a courtesy to say 'are you okay to have a male masseuse'. An older lady was there for her very first massage ever and she got a big dude with an accent. Bit weird for her I imagine, as a first timer.
It's always a bit awkward when a strange man is rubbing you as you lie almost naked. And this was no different as he got very up close and personal. Usually you have to buy me dinner first to get into my pants like that ;-)
But he turned out to be a great masseuse, he asked a lot about my work issues to find out what might be causing the tension and after I got dressed came in to help stretch me out for another 10 minutes. He also gave advice about eating and stuff to prevent further tension. And he never even tried to give me the hard-sell to come back like some people have done there before.
The rooms can be pretty small here, but if you aren't going for a full day of treatments it's fine.
I went for a £12 brow thread. Kimantra was quick and thorough, gave me great shape. Whatever moisturiser they use was really soothing and my brow line was less irritated than usual, will definitely return
Kimantra is a spa in Angel off of Upper Street in Camden Passage. It is also the only place I go for my threading and waxing needs. Shanie is excellent! She is cheerful and personable and happily chats away while I'm having hair removed from various parts of my body.
Shanie is an expert in threading, she threads my eyebrows every 3-4 weeks and my eyebrows are perfect every time. The process is less damaging to the skin than waxing. She also is the only person I will go to for a Brazilian. Waxing hurts, but not when Shanie does it! When the waxing is over the area is smooth and pain free.
A highlight is that Kimantra was just refurbished and looks incredible! There prices have gone up a bit post-refurbishment but they are still much cheaper than other places I've looked into. A Brazilian will set you back £25 and eyebrow threading £11, which isn't bad considering you only do it once a month. The customer service is superb and I highly recommend this spa as your relaxation sanctuary!
Oh boy oh boy. I really dislike doing bad or unpleasant reviews and even more so when a place already has such glowing reviews. But here goes....(note that this spa has a variety of services and my review is in reference to only one of them).
I picked Kimantra based on the positive yelp reviews. I went for a Hollywood wax (Brazilian in the U.S.). The entire appointment lasted about 30 minutes which was good. The esthetician was nice, worked fast, and the room was had mellow music playing in the background.
My main point of concern is that now, roughly 20 hours after the procedure, I am in more discomfort than I normally am after getting waxed (I refrained from writing a review last night when the discomfort was bordering on hurting). While the actual waxing didn't hurt any more than usual for me (I have had many Brazilians and while they are painful, I have never found them to be as painful as everyone seems to make it out to be), the aftermath has been very unpleasant. I think it's b/c the esthetician may have not used hard wax and kept repeating the same area over and over again since I feel very bruised.
So, overall, the actual waxing procedure was not bad and probably not any more painful than the average waxing place (though not as painless as a a really good place would have been), but the after was not good. I have never had this much discomfort this long after a Brazilian/Hollywood wax. I will not be making a return visit.
Note: now 2 days later I am still in discomfort and experiencing peeling. I have now changed my review to give Kimantra one star.
Absolutely cannot say enough good things about this little day spa! As a recent NYC transplant, this spot stands up to the best of what NYC has to offer in service and reasonable pricing AND open late and on Sundays! Strongly recommend waxing and manicures. Maybe go elsewhere for pedis only bc the seating is a bit uncomfortable. LOVE Kimantra!
Terrible experience here and won't return. Very disorganized and amateur business- which is disappointing because the prices and venue look to be ok from the outside.
Made an appointment over the phone for my partner and i to get massages and a facial. The girl was accommodating so was thinking this could be a great regular spot for some treatments on a Sunday. We both turned up, told to go upstairs to the waiting room, didnt ask my name or tell me who my therapist was. My partner went in for his treatment fine but I was left sitting in the waiting room for 40 minutes whilst they sorted out who was doing what with my treatment (another customer was waiting and I was taken into a room then when we asked what was being done first they had no idea so I went back . Two separate girls askede if I was there to see them and I replied that I didn't know who I was seeing but I was booked in for x...40 minutes later another girl comes to see me saying there is a mixup, we can do your facial now and when the masseuse is finished with your partner he can do you (a male masseuse- which I did not want). I ended up canceling as my partner would be waiting for ages for me to finish and I was already quite angry at this point that I didt see any relaxation on the horizon whatsoever. The lady offered complimentary treatments if I came back another time but I said no thank you as I had no inclination of returning. Then she asked me if I needed any treatments while I wait for my partner which was 15 mins. I declined which was probably cutting off my nose to spite my face but she wasn't offering these for free despite saying I could get complimentary treatments "another time" but not now for some reason. Yeh right...I read enough reviews whilst sitting here waiting that I know this is unlikely to be the case.
Anyway, I'm ranting...
Bottom line is that this place is so amateur with no idea of customer service or how to run a salon that even all the zen music amd dim lighting and black stones etc can change the fact that I'd leave there feeling annoyed and not getting my money's worth!
Well after reading the girl's reviews on Yelp!, I thought I'd try out Kimantra for myself. In need of a new waxer, I tested the waters by having my eyebrows done. And I wasn't disappointed. The therapist was lovely, efficient and funny, being one of the first beauticians to ever do my eyebrows exactly as I had requested!
I'll definitely be heading back there to test out some more services - the decore is amazing, so calming, clean and friendly. Fabulous!
I've been carrying so much tension in my neck that I've had constant headaches over the past few months. Kimantra is offering 25% off a deep tissue massage between 10am and noon to celebrate their new location in King's Cross so I decided to give it a go.
It seemed comfortable enough when I entered. There are big glass jars full of oils on the walls that you can have bottled. The decor is around butterflies and dragonflies with a lot of purple and black. The receptionist sent me upstairs and I helped myself to a glass of water. Smooth R&B was playing on the radio when my masseuse, Olga, gave me a form to complete before my massage.
The treatment room left a lot to be desired in that it lacked any noise insulation. I could hear the buses on Upper Street, people walking up and down the hallway, and a handyman in the room next to mine. At one point during the massage I found it odd that the music suddenly became techno then realized it was the handyman's cell phone when I heard him answer it and carry on a conversation.
All that aside, the massage was fantastic. Olga really worked her way into the knots in my upper back. Some of her strokes were a bit painful - but in a good way. If you want a light, relaxing massage, keep in mind that the deep tissue variety is not for you. I was hoping for exactly the massage I received.
If you are searching for a relaxing oasis that will feel like an escape from the city, Kimantra probably isn't the best choice. However, if you want a therapeutic massage for a good price (one hour was 51.75 with the discount) go see Olga.
I went to Kimantra with a friend for a massage, though it's totally not normally my kind of thing. There were some things that made it an amazing experience, though I'll try to not let the biggest one color my review of their services.
First off, my masseuse was excellent, patient and willing to work with me on the areas I wanted massaged. Being a runner, I either need an entire body massage, or have to focus on just calves and upper back. The massage I had was great, very relaxing, and certainly worked out some of the knots I'd earned by running. Even better, I had scheduled only a half-hour session but was given a full hour at no additional cost (I think there was some scheduling confusion but I'm not complaining).
All in all, it was a nice experience at Kimantra, though not something I'm likely to repeat only because of my personal massage habits. I would definitely recommend them though, if you're looking for a place in the Angel area.
I love spa treatments. Spa treatments are brilliant. I'm not a particularly hygienic person but that just makes the cleansing qualities of a spa even more of a bonus for me, as I leave smelling of oils and lotions instead of the inside of a bin which has been left in the sun for three weeks. Enough about my body odour, it's time for me to chat about the AMAZING massage I had at Kimantra and why I think it's a brilliant central place to get some treatments.
So I went for the one hour full body deep tissue massage, as after being hunched over a desk for the past 6 weeks revising for exams my spine was more curved than a banana, and as soon as I arrived I felt the stress begin to melt away. The shop is small but calm, with soft lighting and a comfortable waiting area. I was taken through to the treatment room and pummelled by a man who was built like a barn and incredibly sweet. Apart from when he was making me weep as he loosened every muscle in my body. Often I find that massages are too soft and gentle, but this was perfect- just the right balance of pleasure and pain [I'm hoping I'm not revealing too much about myself in this review; first my lack of washing, now this].It was pricey but there are cheaper treatments and in my opinion it was worth every penny. Brilliant.
I have sort of mixed feelings about my visit here.Bad part first:
My cousin and I arrived and had our consultations which consisted of filling out a form. Then we moved on to our baths which came free with our two 90 minute massages. The person who let us in mentioned that the baths had been pulled hot and that we could add cold water to taste, however the baths were scalding. I've spent a lot of time in a lot of different spas, but I've never gotten into something that hot before. It took us 5-10 minutes to get the tubs to a temperature where we could get in. When we finally got in we didn't have that much time left and our champagne was warm due to the heat in the room. Blech.
That was the bad part. The awesome part was Hamid. I got the best 90 minute massage ever from Hamid who was super professional and very friendly. I tend to get a little nervous around male masseurs, it's a thing. I felt completely comfortable with Hamid and he did a fantastic job. I was extremely tense going in and came out in great shape. He also showed me some stretches that will help keep me from getting into tense body mode again.
I was going to give Kimantra 3 stars, but the combination of my session with Hamid and my cousin's session being good despite her joint issues pushed it up to 4. I'll come back, for sure.
I love the feeling of walking into a beauty salon and feeling completely relaxed, something they manage very well at Kimantra.
Both times i've been here they have been running very late for my appointment though they make up for it with quick and friendly service. Prices are reasonable and I'll be going back again.
I've had many massages in my time but this has to be one of the best. I've recently stepped up my running and I knew my body was in a bit of a mess. Raz was fantastic. He assessed my problem areas- and there were plenty of those and then got to work. I did have to practice various breathing routines to get me through the pain, however it was definitely worth it. I will most certainly be back!
I've been to Kimantra a few times and have had a mix of experiences. I went for a birthday treat and chose to have a facial, a nice relaxing facial. However, the beautician decided to rearrange the nail polish while she let the serum/cream and all that lovely stuff work it's magic. You can imagine it wasn't the most relaxing of facials. I have also had the quick eye treatment which is very refreshing. On the whole the place is quite nice, but just remember there is reason why people go to spas, not only to look great, but to grab a bit of peace!
I went to Kimantra yesterday for a brow, lip and hollywood wax. I had been having a hard time finding a place that offered hot wax (or as I knew it in the States hard strip-less wax) in London that wasn't as much as a week's rent. I heard from a friend that they offered it here and the prices weren't bad, so I figured I'd check out the place for a waxing.
I was able to call in the morning and get an appointment for later that afternoon. When I got there I checked in about 5 minutes early for my appointment and was told to go upstairs to wait for Lilly.
I ended up having to wait about 15 minutes past my appointment start time, a little annoying, but I didn't really have much else to do, so I waited. The waxing commenced and everything seemed to be going well, the pain was very minimal and hair was coming off in all of the right places. She was very thorough and the experience was as pleasant as getting hair ripped off your lady bits can be.
The only thing that really made me feel icky is that she reused the wax stick for my hollywood wax. I'm sure all of the germs and whatever dies at that temperature of a waxing pot, but I've never had a waxer do that before. I guess for the price I can't complain too much.
My experience was good enough that I'll probably make this "my" waxing place and I'll just try to not think about the reused sticks.
Also, be prepared because you can't tip on a card here. If you plan on tipping bring cash.
A solid 4 star performance. This is not a place positioned at the high end, but it is really nice. I was able to get a same-day appointment for a deep tissue massage and I was blessed with Carolina who was fantastic. She really worked out all of my knots and was constantly checking to see how the pressure was treating me. She was clearly a professional and well-trained. I was so impressed I booked an appointment for the following week for a shoulder and back massage so she could keep working her magic.
I had two terrible experiences at the Kimantra Urban Spa, where I went based on the positive yelp reviews.
I first went on a saturday a few months ago for a brazilian waxing. The girl was clearly a beginner, she was almost trembling and she left threads of wax everywhere and on my body (and did not remove them afterwards). She would wax four times the same area of skin, because she said the hair did not go, although I never had that problem anywhere else. She was so clumsy that I was scared she would hurt my skin. I went out with a red skin and a very bad feeling.
I went again a few months after, still on a saturday, thinking I'd give them another chance because I live so close. I went for a brazilian waxing + a luxury pedicure. For the waxing it was the same girl, she got a bit better but not very much, I still had a bad moment and decided never to go again. I should probably have cancelled the pedicure at that moment because that is when the nightmare started. The "luxury" pedicure took place... in the corridor! with people passing by all the time and the girl having to move all her stuff because there was not enough place for all of us, while I was sitting on an uncomfortable bench. I am not going to talk about how lame the pedicure was because the only fact that I paid 55 pounds to be seated in a corridor seems bad enough for me. No need to say I'll never go to this place again.
OH MY GOD! It is really an experience were the final outcomes are relaxation, being 200% chilled out and completely stress free, it is worth every pound. I went there looking for a massage, you know just something that would feel good. Instead I got the best massage I have ever had in my life! I was a walk-in and fortunately there was an opening, the staff is really professional and even their voices are soothing. My masseuse certainly knew what she was doing, they are all qualified and from my standing they all have miracle hands. The building works with feng shui principles, so there is lots of light in the roof top, calming colours in the therapy rooms and complimentary water, teas and revitalizing juices with you treatment. My treatment of choice was Kimantra's deep tissue, if you spend a lot of time on front of the computer (hello yelpers!) this is the one, it frees up tight knots in the shoulder, back and neck with lovely smelling oils. You get 60 minutes of heavenly relaxation for £65. I am going again, actually I have now begun hinting to my husband so he gets me a gift certificate for one of their day spa sessions for Christmas.
