This is the holy grail of all grilled cheese sandwiches! It is a perfect blend of deliciousness - gooey cheese with a slight bite. The cheese is well balanced with garlic and green onion on sourdough. I don't even like sourdough, but it's the bread that makes this sandwich so crispy.

I consider myself a slight grilled cheese aficionado and it is definitely worth the wait in line because it's made to order so it comes to you piping hot. You cannot mess with perfection so believe me when I say, stay in line and be patient.

The sandwich itself if large so not only is it outrageously tasty, you can share it with a friend... or maybe not. One of the best £5 spent in London. A brilliant lunch!

Sometimes, when you try something new, your taste buds don't know what to do with it right away - is it good? is it ok? lets give this a bit of a go and see where we end up.  This is not the case with the toasted cheese sandwich (cheese toasty) from Kappacasein.

From the first bite, I wanted to ask it its number and do bad things to it and, for sure, call it back. (it's that good)

Tried the toasty for the first time in the summer of '09 and it was delicious.  So good, in fact, that as soon as we landed in London, this time around, and before we could even check in to our flat, I dragged my father and brother to Borough at 9 AM, to find out that they hadn't set up yet.

After sitting in Monmouth coffee and perusing the farm fresh cheeses of Neal's Dairy, for an hour or two, still bleary eyed, we walked over to the Kappacasein booth.

Mouth Salivating, we asked for three cheese toasties and just watched as the rye bread on the griddle mixed with melted cheese drippings to form a perfect crispy-cheesey crust on the outside and the inside turned melty ooey-gooey cheesey with onion and garlic.

I waited until my brother and father took their bites to make sure that it was as good for them on their first time as it was for me.  After synchronous 'holy shit's' I, too, tucked in to the marvel in my hands.

this is, hands down, the best sandwich I've ever had. From first bite to last.

An unbeatable stop in the Borough Market, this is the definition of impressive and unique street food. As you wait in line, you'll note a giant wheel of cheese broils beneath an open flame, delighting your nose and providing a feast for your eyes. You may not have arrived hungry, but you certainly are now. You'll go ahead and hand over a 5er as you make your way closer and closer to the stand, growing impatient as you see each person before you depart with a plate full of heaven. Finally it's your turn and the friendly deliciousness-purveyor will load up a small plate with slightly mashed potatoes. He'll then remove the hunk of cheese from its stand with his bare grease-soaked hands and scrape off the top layer, pouring the bubbling gooey goodness over the potatoes. After a few cornichons and a serious helping of pepper are added, it's in your hands and you're on your way with one of the most delectable and sinful plates of food you could imagine. Your arteries may clog just at the sight of it, forcing you not to completely clean your plate, but for those few bites of bliss, it's worth a few extra points on the cholesterol.

DOH!  I had never noticed the name of this place because I am always just in cheese heaven from the moment I am in the vicinity and then I just obsess about getting my toasted cheese sandwich in my mouth which is the perfect combo of delicious bread, melted cheese, onions, garlic and herbs that just makes life worth living!  Dying to try the raclette, but can't seem to give up the toastie!  The raclette is the most amazing raclette I have ever seen--better than what I saw in Switzerland.  Makes going to the gym worthwhile....

Cover me in cheese, please, please please just cover me in melted cheese, pickles, sweet onions and lay me on rye bread. Oh and shove some potatoes on there too.

I'm in love with Will, he brought me to the sexy stall where the food is hot and the fromage is hotter. As you mooch through Borough market you will not be able to forgive yourself if you overlook this cheese feast snuggled in there amidst the other foodie treasures. For this type of satisfaction that £5 can not normally deliver, better than a trip to Soho and more fulfilling than reading from the top shelf. Will's cheese is the good stuff, the stuff that can weld together lasting relationships, and two slices of slightly toasted bread.

Trust be once you've tasted this cheese, you life will be complete.*

A damned good grilled cheese sandwich.  Probably the best you'll ever have.  But was it life changing?  Not quite.  After reading some of these Yelp reviews and others on the 'net, I was expecting other worldly, mind blowing goodness.  It was not that, but it was gooey and delicious.  Was glad I tried it, and for just 5 pounds, the value can't be beat.

You are jet lagged after a 10-hour flight or totally beat after a 2-week cruise in the Baltic and lugging all your luggage to a hotel in London from the cruise ship terminal 2.5-hour train & taxi ride away.  Should you take a nap?  No.  You need to hop on the Tube and head right to Kappacasein in Bourough Market immediately.  That was exactly what we did after arriving in London for an overnight stay and returning to London after our 2-week cruise.

The pictures serve more than what I can describe in words about the raclette that I had for just £5.  Cheese wheels cut into logs and broiled under a broiler until sizzling and then drizzled over roast new potatoes.  Sprinkled with salt and pepper, my plate was heaven and it was well worth fighting my sleepy eyes.

It's funny, I was planning to write about how I would give this six stars If I could, and the first person to review this incredible stall in Borough Market said the exact same thing. That should give you an idea of the sublime nature of this toasted cheese sandwich.

Seriously, it is ORGASMIC.

Two quotes straight from the mouths of my companions:

1. 'Oh holy f*cking sh*t, this is the best sandwich ever.'

2. 'Wow. This sandwich is better than some sex I've had.'

Enough said.

Still as good as ever, though we only made it to two of the possible three times it was available to us.  That was only because we had Saturday matinee Billy Elliot tickets, and it just wasn't convenient scheduling.  I should also note that the price of this delectable sandwich has risen to 5 GBP (about $8.50), up from 4 GBP last trip.

I found a terrific article about this sandwich (complete with picture) here:  http://familystyles.wo...

The article mentions the glowing reviews of the sandwich from the well respected food reviewer, Ruth Reichl.  She has called it the best thing she's ever eaten in all of London, and, that was in an article several years ago about her observation that London had become one of the fine dining capitals of the world.

Now, I'm not quite sure it would have been worth dying for.  Mrs and I were on United 949 on July 20th, London to Chicago, which caught fire over the Atlantic.  Along with everyone else on the plane, including the crew, we thought for sure we were going down in the Atlantic as the plane filled with smoke.  Thanks to the heroic efforts of the pilots, who had donned gas masks and goggles, and could not see the controls, we managed an emergency landing (and overnight stay) in Iceland.

My various posts on that horrendous experience are on http://www.flyertalk.com.  I'm just saying, I'm not sure the sandwich is worth dying for.  On the other hand, I would definitely have it high on my list of possible last meals.  For sure, the opportunity to contemplate my own demise in juxtaposition to a recent consumption of this great grilled cheese sandwich, has at least created an interesting philosophical discussion in my own mind.  It's that good.

Thanks to Kappacasein, I'll never be able to eat a grilled (toasted) cheese sandwich again.  I know for a fact that I have eaten what is the zenith, no, the very pinnacle of putting cheese between bread; everything after this sandwich is disappointment.

It all starts in an unassuming way at a regular food cart.  Uncooked, pre-made sandwiches stand in a Plexiglas box next to some ordinary panini presses.  When you ask for one, they throw it in the panini press for a long, slow, delicious toasting process.  What comes out is a crispy, cheesy, moment-of-clarity-inducing sandwich.  While the cheese is clearly the star here, the bread, the butter on it and the onions and various seasonings on top of the cheese make up the rest of the band in this rock ballad of a sandwich; it would be utterly incomplete without them.  All this for about £4.

While waiting for your toasted cheese, get an order of raclette while your at it because you're going to have a heart attack someday; it might as well be now.  What is raclette, you say?  In short, they take a halved wheel of cheese and put the exposed section under a flame (see the pictures for a visual approximation).  The flame slowly melts the exposed cheese until it just starts to burn ever so slightly.  What happens at this point may just blow your mind.  They grab a plate of seasoned and halved boiled potatoes and spicy gherkins and then remove the half cheese wheel from under the flame.  Holding the cheese wheel just above the plate, they take a knife and, in one motion, scrape all the melted cheese right on top of those potatoes.  Then, as if you weren't reeling from how awesome that sight just was, they shave a little more hard cheese on top of the melted stuff which is on top of those divine potatoes.  Go ahead, Google it if you don't believe this exists.  I'll wait.

We were fortunate enough to stumble upon this humble cart in what may be the happiest chance encounter we've ever had.  Being hungry, we wished to try the English take on an American classic and were soundly blown away.  This ain't no Kraft Singles and Cheez-Whiz.  No, this stuff is real food, made well by great people.  If I don't come back here when in London again then someone should kick me in the teeth.

Fortunately, I can still eat raclette without teeth.

I would give this six stars if I could... definitely one of those things to put on you "to do before you die" list - and I'm not kidding.  I do not think I've tasted anything quite as divine as what's being sold at this ever-popular stall; a toasted cheese sandwich to trump all toasted cheese sandwiches: three slices of French sourdough melding with sharp Montgomery cheddar and a piquant mélange of onions and garlic - generously buttered and hot-pressed to crispy brown perfection.

The sandwich looks ethereal wrapped in its white parchment - and the taste is exalting; so rapturous, in fact, I swear, you don't even care about the calories (and I always care about the calories).

These purveyors of heaven also sell something called raclette: bubbling Ogleshield scraped onto a mound of boiled potatoes and gherkins.  But while the process of making this Swiss dish is more fascinating to watch, and ought to be tried, it's certainly the celestial cheese sandwich that entices everyone back.
