The Restaurant Kantorei is a hidden medieval gem in the Niederdorf, well worth exploring.
I was recently invited to a dinner appointment and while I assumed that, by now, I know most of the "older" restaurants in town, I realized that I'd never been in the Kantorei before.
Which is sad, because the restaurant, set in a wonderful old building, features a clean, modern look and is well-suited for a mildly fancy, but casual dinner.
Food was decent and the wine selection was very, very nice when we visited. I ordered the classic Wienerschnitzel with pommes allumettes (42.50 CHF). Both came up fairly quickly and the Wienerschnitzel was well done, very thin and with crispy breading. The pommes allumettes, served in a little extra basked were a nice touch, but cooled down very quickly and were a bit cumbersome to eat. Given the choice, I'd probably have preferred regular fries or some nice fried potatoes.
Service was responsive and quick, despite the fact that every seat in the house was taken that night. Prices are a tad on the high side, but still in a reasonable area.
