Long Before my National Insurance card came off the press I was thrust into employment at Jenny Watts. My Mum convinced me that working at one of Bangor's busiest bars would help round my character. To this day I am not sure if it did, but one thing is for sure the labour I undertook will help me give you the inside track on Bangor's oldest licensed premises.
Jenny Watts is the Grandfather of pubs, it is quirky, full of character and can be quite entertaining if you ignore the tobacco stains. But much like an elderly relative it has one or two very interesting stories to tell.
Legend has it Jenny herself was a famous 18th Century smuggler, regulars in the bar will tell of long winding caves that run from under the pubs deep cellar all the way to Bangor Bay. Having worked in Jenny Watts I can unfortunately confirm that this story is just a myth. But it is stories like this that help to mould an establishment.
Tourists and Locals intermingle in Jenny Watts creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. If you are looking for a traditional Irish pub atmosphere then look no further. In the winter locals huddle round the open fire sipping Guinness and swirling sixteen year old whiskey. In the summer the enclosed Beer Garden is full to the brim with holiday makers drinking cider and sparkling rose. All this accompanied by live music all year round makes Jenny's perfect for any occasion.
Jenny Watts also offers a full Bistro menu making it a very difficult place to leave. One tip from me, if you are going to Jenny Watts make sure you ask the friendly staff or locals if they have experienced any spooky happenings, I am sure they will not disappoint.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Andy M.Bangor, North Down55369524 Feb 2016
Jenny's.. What a place! I'm almost certain this is Bangor's oldest pub. It's quirky and full of character. It's defiantly more suited to a older crowd but I've had some great nights in here.
It's defiantly the best bar in Bangor for watching any form of rugby, especially Ulster and Ireland games. The atmosphere is always electric. And sometimes do great drink promotions on during the game.
It's got a few open fire's you can sit in front and keep warm on a winters night, and a small but great beer garden for them warm summer evenings with heaters there for when it gets a tad nippy. And you can pop out there for a smoke also.
A few years ago they have revamped upstairs and it can be hired for private party's, it's defiantly a lot more modern up there so I would highly recommend there for a party, it's got it's own bar, seated area, and a big enough dance floor to embarrass yourself after one to many (I've done it many times myself). It also has its own smoking area.
I've only eat in here once and I was not disappointed!! Great lunch time meals and evening meals. I think the food stops around 8 on the weekends so if you want food make sure you get down early.
All in all a fantastic bar.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Robbie B.Belfast165262818 Jul 2010First to Review
It took me to be a little bit older and to have a summer of drinking quite often to really get into this place and now I really, really like it. Its an old style pub with a lovely homely feeling and really is a cracking place to go and have a few pints or some red wine.
It has a lovely wee beer garden/smoking area out the back that is brilliant craic on a summers evening and really adds to the ambience and atmosphere of Bangor's oldest pub. The decor is oldy worldy and the pictures on the wall must've started a million conversations. There is a club upstairs on a Saturday night but its for the older divorceé crowd so I've never been. There is usually some nice acoustic pub singers downstairs so thats enough for me.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Stuart K.Bangor, North Down8449466 Mar 2016
Busy afternoon for Mothers Day. Jenny Watts was busy. We had reserved a table for 5. They had the table cleared and waiting for us as expected. Service was prompt but friendly. Didn't feel rushed at any stage even though they were clearly busy. The food was good fare, nothing exceptional, but good quality basic menu. All you can ask for from a high street pub. Nothing pretentious. Good food, good portions and one of the most beautiful barmaids I've got ever seen!

Jenny Watts is one of those really old traditional pubs that thankfully hasn't jumped on the metal and glass bandwagon every other bar seems to have. The interior consists of old wooden tables, chairs, fixtures and fittings and has a real warm, cosy and inviting feel!
The beer garden is also pretty awesome an is always really busy in the summer months. Often filled with tourists and locals sharing stories and good banter.
The pints are great and they do awesome burgers and chips here too!! Great food, great beer, great place!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Caroline S.Belfast292053533 Sept 2016
If you want traditional pub grub or a good big Sunday roast dinner then Jenny Watts is one of the places to go in Bangor. We had been to Pickie park and were wrecke after running after the wee man, so we needed our Sunday dinner there and then. We didn't need to book thankfully and the friendly waitress got us a table right away. I couldn't resist ordering a half guinness, which tasted good. My other half ordered the Roast Pork ansd as there was no roast beef left I opted for lasagne. They served us up massive portions of good tasty food. My son shared my lasagne and I was still full up afterwards. They have a 2 course special on Sunday for £11.95, you would need to be really hungry to manage 2 courses I would say. Jenny Watts is a bit dark in the main pub, but ideal in the winter for that snug pub feel.

It's a bar that sells beer and also does food. I like that. Good atmosphere too. Loads of mad stuff on the walls and ceiling that are good to keep you entertained when the people you are with are boring as sin.

Jenny's is the oldest pub in Bangor with a small, cosy and traditional feel. You wont find banging pop music or teenyboppers guzzling toxic looking drinks. It's more of an older generation who want to engage in the art of conversation over a pint of the black stuff and the happy background ambiance of folk/traditional music. Upstairs in Jenny's used to be a small nightclub for the older crowd and is still listed as such on the website but the doorman was telling me recently that it has been renovated into a wine bar. Weeknight entertainment Wednesday, Thursday and Friday includes folk singers and other local musical artists - I enjoy this pub immensely especially when I don't want to get 'dolled up' for a night on the town and would rather have a quieter nights craic with my mates.
